great venue, always got good crowds, and mixed the tunes up wonderfully. Also I could tell mum and dad I was going to a club run by the Reverend Tony Clayton !!

Hippo sent me a copy of it, as mine has been half inched. Emotional one, it has a mate on there who was killed in a car accident. great to see him rush onto the floor when they start playing all that 70s stuff. As I am heading in the opposite direction. whistling.gif

The Rev. Tony Clayton is still DJing at the Parkway Club Peterborough and looks and sounds even more like a vicar/headmaster than ever.

Can picture you really well.

I bumped into Graham from North Wales at Blackpool a couple of years ago, and he sorted out a little oddfellows reunion. Despite him saying he'd been off the scene for years, he still seemed to know everyone in the room.

Gonna have to watch the end again now, and laugh at you leaving.

Awesome nighters and a great venue. Central England Soul Club? Heart of England Soul Club? Can't remember...think I'm on that 2nd anniversary video dancing in dungarees, which used to give me nipple rash. Dancing even more like a twat than usual cos I'd broken my left big toe the weekend before and couldn't move properly.

I do Joan because i was the third person to join the CENTRAL England Soul Club, which organised the leicester niters.the first niter was held at a venue across the road from the Leicester bus station on my 21st birthday it was also my sis Viki's first niter as well.I think they only had a couple of dos there before moving to the Oddfellows venue,I agree, a very underated all-niter,btw bumped into Ally Mayer at the Kettering Dayer recently  :  Delx

I remember me Necky, Smudge and Nige went on a coach from Bishop's Stortford, via London Victoria to Leicester to go to that nighter and . . . . it had been cancelled!

Well miffed. Always remember this copper saying we'd be best off spending a night in the cells, cos with our Southern accents we'd be likely to get chinned on the streets of Leicester on a Saturday night at chucking out time!

Thankfully some other dudes we knew had rolled up in cars, so we went home with them and the high point was greasy grub at Watford Gap services :D

Central England Soul Club though remember it well, still have the membership somewhere. Loughborough Town Hall etc, Tommy Navaro played three times in one night :shades:

God we were all a lot younger then!!! There's me and the rest of the Letchworth crew out on the floor, me talking about Little John 'Wait and See' with Keb behind the decks whilst Gary Rushbrookes on, Graham, Pottsy, Rob, Panda, Pickle, ah the list is endless - where are they all now? It really was a great club and alonside Stafford and the 100 was the only other one promoting the whole Sixties Newies thing. The video captures the atmosphere of the place but misses out on all the fun and the jokes etc etc - who can remember when Tony Clayton spun 'Blowing My Mind To Pieces' as we were forced to leave due to a bomb scare? Or the same evening as we were about to file down the stairs the same Rocking Rev' telling us that the police would be searching the bags and smiling as 100+ soulies headed straight for the toilets for an impromptu stop!!! Sadly not given a mention these days so I for one am glad to stand up and shout that i was there and yes, it was a great club!!! T-shirts with vests over the top, permed hair, loose women (ask Rob K about that!!!!!) just some of the things we will skip over for now :-))) Wiganer - is that you with the dark hair and the snorkel at the end of the video? (and by the way what a great finish to the video that is!!!!) If it is then i remember you!!!!

It was brilliant, and in my opinion the atmosphere was better than Stafford, usually because Stafford was often only half full. I loved it, probably my favourite nighter.

Went to the revival night organised by Ally in memory of Tommo and Mud a few years back.

I have no idea why it hasn't been resurrected. :shades:

I think that the reason why there arent Leicester revivals, is because there arent that many tracks that people associate with being an 'Oddfellows sound'.

The clubs that are often celebrated at reunions have many clearly defined 'monsters'. Yate possibly suffers a similar problem. There are Yate and Leicester sounds, but not as many as say, Wigan Torch etc.

Whilst on this subject of the sounds spun can I just say a big thumbs up to Adam who was always outstanding at the Oddfellows and certainly put me on the road to Modern heaven! J. Balckfoot, Kashiff, Steve Arrington to name but 3 that stick in the mind! The downstairs 6T's Newies room (as we called it) was always a great night and I wonder if the Rockin' Rev or Ally have the unedited video of the anniversary night still as that's something I'd love to have a copy of as so much must have been cut! Same with the Morecombe Pier one as well :-)

J Blackfoot still one of my faves, as was Glenda Mcloed - No Stranger to love.

Was it Adam who was playing Marlena Shaw - I just want the feeling to last??

It must be from about that time. Dave Thorley showed me an album with the track on. I loved it at the time, but it never gets played anymore.

I adored the Nighter.I was a regular there from begining to end. Absolutely excellent venue and great DJ line up.

I've got a page dedicated to it on my website mate. https://www.soulechoes.co.uk/

You can straight to The Oddfellows page here:

https://ic0htsk00.ic24.net/soulechoes/Oddfellows.htm

So I heve definiteley not forgotten it...engrained in my memory forever!

Reckon this was The best nighter in the '80's along with Stafford TOTW.

Happy memories

I remember the Oddies stopping, I also remember oging to Notts "Pally" just after....one not so found memory of Notts was the local "grease" pulling up and asking "wots the party" :D and failing to understand what we were queuing for.

Which was the CESC night when Soulie from Nuneaton won the dance competition - was it the 5th anniversary?

He also made a nice cover for a Kent album I think!

I'd love a copy of the 2nd Anniversary video if anyone is willing to copy it - I'll pay of course... am on it looking ridiculous (I remember thinking that then, Christ knows how bad I will look now :D )

Remember getting legged by skinheads that night and a group kicking a load of scooters over.

I transferred the video to DVD, but can't find it at the moment I'll do you a copy when I find it. Gave a copy to 'in town Mikey' & the 'Big O' last year, so presume it plays OK. I can't copy the original video tape though ( don't know where that is either)

Hi dave

Maybe we know each other to look at? I'm originally from Dursley, and used to go to Yate, Leicester, Wheelrights, Roundabout etc. I bet we do.

Do you still go anywhere? I've just started going to Saracens in Cheltenham, since moving back over this way(ish). Top night.

I'm also in the 2nd anniversary video. Dancing a few times, and I'm one of the 5 lads walking into the sunrise in the morning as the video ends. I'm carrying the Rufus Lumley LP with Stronger than me, on.

Do I know you? From reading some of your stuff you seem to have been there around the time I was most? Sorry memory a bit blurry since those days! I sometimes see faces around and think 'I know you' but the names usually escape me and I can't pluck up the courage to speak! Actually memory a bit blurry since last week come to think of it! People usually come up and say they recognize me because of my dancing (surely can't be that bad!)

I was a 'mature student' in Leicester in 80/81 and knew Ali from his record stall. Didn't Oddfellows kick off at the Saracen's Head in the middle of town? I remember Rev Tony & Ali DJing there. Rough town late at night but great beer.

Yes it did, soul nights every other Monday back in the very early 80s, i myself moved to Leicester three weeks after the Casino's 1st 'final ' niter to attend the local college there,i got to know Phyl, Ali's ex wife and her sister Justine along with Tracy, who always had a different hairstyle every single time we all went to any soul dos together, i think it was one of the few times i actually went around with a group of female soulies unsure.gif Delx
