There certainly was a version of under my thumb by April Silver played around 1974/75 but I always was sceptical about whether it was real or not. Maybe a Soussan recording? Never seen another copy besides mine, and only now realizing there is some soul appeal on the one side! I would be interested to know if there's a first/second press situation, as an old topic on here says that it also came out on another label (Blue Dolphin)? I've always considered it to be a Soussan boot? Doubtfull it was a "tailor made" or April Stevens because it's a raw production with some attitude on the vocal! Damn hard to find though! Only had two copies in the last 8 years sold them for £8 each. Info the the "Blue Dolphin" 45, would be greatly appreciated as I can't recall ever seeing one. Or any other info on this mystery 45. The backing band on April Silva' Under My Thumb were the Brymers who had been signed to the Diplomacy label by Bill Silva and who had several releases on that label, as did Jimmy Holiday. The sleeve notes of their recent compilation CD, which includes Under My Thumb, might give more info about UMT's original release. No Northern soul jingles or crass ogasn work.. but bizarrely the label resembles his style of "artwork" just need to know if it exists on another label, if not then we must assume Commonwealth is an original or did he find it on an LP or studio tape.?? It was only in my hands for a few months before I swapped it for an original Bob Relf on Trans-American. As John said, it's sung with attitude - and definitely in retalliation to the Stones' original (just listen to the way she stresses "HE'S under my thumb"!). And got one as a wedding present from my wife 10 years ago when we was married.. she had problems getting hod of it, even though it was a cheap record. And I've never found a copy USA side I just found another copy in my stock this morning and on closer examination it exactly resembles the vinyl type and the label text as the MODERN label. Ironically the label colouring is pretty darn close to the 3 45s that Soussan got Modern to press the instrumental on the flips. Mary Love - Lay This, Vernon Garrett - Turn back & Jackie Day - Before it's too late. Same weird shade of Turquoise. To be honest, on feeling the COMMONWEALTH 45 it feels good, looks "right" and resembles an authentic MODERN pressings. But you know that wouldn't have stop someone using MODERN to press it. Which takes us back to the question, does this 45 exist on another label or LP track? Ady Good point Ady, no there were not any weird/boot 45s amongst the stuff that I am aware of so maybe it's legit.....I'm not totally convinced yet, but it sounds like a strong case. If a few other people could say they'd found a copy in a similar manner to myself it would be good to know, surely there's a few more copies around (but probably more in the UK then left here in the States)! I await the expertise of others on this board..... Steve - I will try and get a clip up in a short while. EDIT: looks like a clip is already on the site..... bro Posted January 15, 2008 Share Posted January 15, 2008 i first heard the april version at keele spun by rob smith ,sounds great out loud ! and took around 6 or 7 years to track down ,got it of butch in the end. played this out alot to a young student crowd and it went down great ,as for being a sousan boot i don't think so myself ,i thought he pressed well known things he could make a buck on ? correct me if i'm wrong. as john said the quality is loud and proud and it looks right. i think i'm right in saying that its not had that much airplay over the years and wouldn't really warrant pressing up in any quantity. as for the blue dolphin release i would love to hear from someone owning one ! There was one in his collection when he sold up, I though he had paid £20 way back. A very hard record, but as above Ady & John is it because everyone thought it was a bootleg ? The session with April took place in 1966 at Harmony Studios in Hollywood. As you are probably aware, April was about 18 years old and the daughter of Bill Silva (owner of Diplomacy/Commonwealth Records). After we recorded Sacrifice, I Want To Tell You, Every Moment of the day, and Make Love Not War, we were asked to develop an arrangement for "Under My Thumb" for April. She was a very cool young lady and so we layed down the instrumental track. The track has been one of my favorites over the years. I really enjoy hearing a female singing the song. Commonwealth released limited copies of the record. A wee bit of trivia for you! Have you heard the "B" side? it is called "In Cold Blood" and the backing group were good friends called The Stepping Stones. Bill Silva, Al Verrismo, and Mel Simas had a stable of groups that they managed and had them tour around the country. Maybe you have heard of some of the groups. They were: The Brymers, The Stepping Stones, April Silva, The Gaouchos, Gear One, and The Kilts. When on the road we should frequently play the same venues, etc.. All of the groups were from California. It was a great time and a crazy time. Many of our friends later became associated with groups who recorded gold records. For example, a small four piece group from our area use tom open for us. they were called The Sullies. The drummer, Steve Perry, later joined Candy then "Journey." Another friend was from Visalia and had a group called Tom Johnson and the Implicits. He later help form The Doobie Brothers.
