I'm glad we agree about bootlegs, Mark, and I respect your views about OVO.

By the way, I also think it's fine for a DJ to play 45s or LP tracks on UK labels, old or new, as long as they are legitimate issues. And they often sound better.

Think my "original" stance is more 1st issue be it US or UK and 45 or LP only track.... I know the 1st issue can mean 2 of them if being padantic, i.e. local and national or different labels east or west, etc., in US, but you get my drift....

I'll just add that, more so in the case of Modern Soul, CD also if that's the song's 1st issue.... purpose made vinyl for unreleased stuff is always the more "iffy" one to get agreement on...

Not everyones idea of what's original I suppose.... just mine.... and perhaps a few others....

I'm confident that all Kent and Grapevine 45s are legitimate and they tend to be the first UK issues rather than reissues of popular oldies. In some cases they are the only issues anyway.

And my own Selecta and Shotgun labels fall into that category (apologies for the shameless plug).

I don't have enough knowledge of some of the other labels so I'd rather not comment. And it would be wrong to generalise.

It was actually older 45s I had in mind. London, Action, Stateside, Mojo, Contempo, etc. There are plenty of great soul tracks in those catalogues.

I think I have a soft spot for UK labels.

In fact we should start a thread to list all the great tracks which were first issued on UK labels.

Like I said to Mossy, there are some great 45s which were only ever issued in the UK. And some great CD tracks too. I think they should all be played.

A good example is "I'm Here Now That You Need Me" by JJ Barnes which I raved about when it turned up on the Cellarfull Of Soul 3 album. That deserves to be heard in clubs.

We really should have a thead about UK issues, Mark. There have been so many gems.

Back on topic.... yes you're right of course.... was thinking more along the lines of the tracks from previous US/UK releases that were put out on Grapevine, Sevens, etc., in general rather than "unreleased" stuff....

There's some unreleased stuff on Goldmine, Edwin Starr - You got to be foolin (I think) & Diane Lewis - Keep a hold on me, that's a couple off the top of my head, i'm sure there's more.

Two great tracks, the only problem is as soon as people see that Goldmine lable spinning on the decks they assume it's a re-issue.

This is one of the main reasons why I and I'm sure many others out there choose not to contribute or get involved on here as much as we used too due to the constant barrage of personal abuse, attacts, snipping, bad blood, people who think they can say what they like to who they like and stuff the consiquences, I myself have been involved in some of the negative stuff on here in the past and even closed my account a couple of times to try and avoid the conflict with one or two people, the best way to combat the bad vibes is I feel to totally ignore it and not rise to the bait, often saying nothing speaks far more than steaming straight in there with all guns blazing, I'm not gonna directly comment on this current thread and batlle of wills between 'Jock' who I know very well and respect a great deal and 'Beeks' who I don't know as any comment would be percieved as being biast towards Jock, the problem with Soul Source sometimes is the passion gets in the way and we become very deffensive, angry and self opinionated and often some comments and observations can be totally taken out of context or read in a totally different way to which they were written, basically sometimes putting words in the original posters mouth or seeing things in a totally different light.

I must say I can honestly say I'm happy to not be involved with the scene too much anymore and the main reason for this is to do with this constant infighting and pretty much all negative threads and actions on and off this website and have no real desire to be involved or around something I once loved because it's been destroyed from it's very core, nothing to do with the music or the joy and pleasure it still it gives me as that will last forever.

This is really hard to say but if I'm totally honest the SCENE bores the shit out of me and has no real draw anymore even from a DJ perspective I'm just not interested which is partly to do with all the crap that goes on behind the scenes and on public forums etc. the bullies, pontificating and all the other negative stuff just ends up chipping away at you and in the end you just don't care anymore. I've got to the stage where it's really not that important anymore and basically I don't care what people think, say or do no mater who they are, respect due to many people on the scene and here on Soul Source and the scene in general but please if you have a beef with someone maybe try and sort it out off this forum if possible.

Nail on head there Pete so much more in life to deal with and enjoy, family, business, football etc. etc. we all know N-Soul can take over your life it certainly did mine for over 30 years and perhaps as a way of life it's not all it's cracked up to be again nothing to do with the wonderful music just all the other stuff that comes with the commitment and passion.

That wasn't really my point in isolation there Pete, I think it was being implied again that dancers dont care, implying anyone who dances isn't into the collecting side, in my circle they did and do and for most of the people around in 80's/90's it was just a given. I always think its selling a large number opf "punters" short with this implication

I think I said later though that it is different now, and yes me too, I travel rarely for a number for of reasons, and in light of the recent crap thrown around on here, you are right, its even less important!

There was no such implication. Please don't read things out of context or read things which weren't even written or implied. My point was clearly that most people, in my opinion, are more interested in the music than the rarity aspect ...or anything else for that matter.

It certainly wasn't intended to offend anyone and I'm amazed that you're still going on about it.

I had to put up with your insults such as "patronising" and "libertarian freedom fighter" for something I hadn't even said.

I was angry yesterday but today is a new day. I've put it behind me now.

i dont know if this is relevent to the ovo thread but it is for me last week i went from Scotland to Middleton which as you know has three rooms i heard records in all three rooms which i couldnt have heard on CD OR MP3 as i didnt know what they were.

i met people from up and down the country that i dont talk to except at soul nights.

and i ha a fuckin good time.

Now i know the records i heard were on origanal format because no one would have bootlegged them.

As i ave said before it is a secret and esoteric scene and that is why it has resisted the attempts at media takeover for decades.

There is a do in Scotland pretty much every weekend and the majority of them play origanal vinyal i go occasionaly if i am not goig to a nighter down south or in Europe.

If people want to go to local social doos then great but for me it will always be about hearing that new tune in a big venue that makes you run up to the decks and say "what the f*** was that".

I cant ever recall walking onto the floor to dance to a sound then having a change of heart because its a pressing or a carver etc. I have slight memories of a night in Wigan when Pat Bredy played the Del Capris (Construction) when it was released on GV. The floor was as packed as usual if my memory serves me right....which I hope it still does

Its all irrespective this weekend at all the various venues wether they play OV, boots or reissues as 90% of the punters know whats going to be played at said venues but will still go along and support them, either because its close to home its the venue they prefer to support or they want something different.

It will always be the same just like the Mecca Vs Wigan used to be, so once again this weekend it will be the paying public that decide what format they will be listening and dancing to wether we like it not as without them this thread would not be here now, we can all ask people to vote for a certain party i.e. Labour, Conservative whatever but most will still vote for the things they know and are happy with, so just enjoy the music this weekend for what it is N/S.

There's now some confusion in my mind as to what we're all talking about. My DJ Biffo is a nice guy who happens to love his NS but doesn't have all of it on OVO which doesn't make him less passionate than those of us who do. Pete60 pointed out to me that nowadays everybody has much more varied committments and responsibilities than when they were younger and yet they still take the time to arrange to go out if only to a local do suggesting some love for the music. DJ Lazy seems a completely different kettle of fish whose sole purpose from the way I read it is personal glorification, second to making a few bob. Well, there's been a few like that and they weren't all playing boots.

I just don't think the original question leads to an "either...or" situation. Jocko rightly says that the collecting of OVO goes right back and forms the core of the scene for a lot of people. A quick aside here cos it wasn't always so in that I remember getting Tempos off Richard after it had been bootlegged for the price of a new release. The jocks and a lot of collectors used to off-load 45s when available to the masses and that only started to change I'd guess from mid '70's onwards. However there have always been those who bought bootlegs or a mixture of both and no one got too exercised about it.

Finally I'd refute the notion that the only way to hear good records is to travel miles to a "big venue" or allnighter. Im sure Steve G and others has done their share of small local clubs and have had people coming up to the decks to check out what they were playing; OK, in Steve's case probably with an ugly look and baseball bats but at least they were motivated by his selections. There's now some confusion in my mind as to what we're all talking about. My DJ Biffo is a nice guy who happens to love his NS but doesn't have all of it on OVO which doesn't make him less passionate than those of us who do. Pete60 pointed out to me that nowadays everybody has much more varied committments and responsibilities than when they were younger and yet they still take the time to arrange to go out if only to a local do suggesting some love for the music. Joan i've been going to scooter rallies and weekenders for many years, i've seen most of the top DJs...Russ Winstanley has even played for me at one of my nights(Eyes Down in Dry Bar) So this attending venues thing is wearing a little thin

My next challenge might be to list those that play interesting stuff versus boring stuff...but that would be just tooooooooo subjective and would lead to all manner of punch ups - so may just stay with OV v CR&P
