Probably the best 'pound for pound' UK label ever as far as NS is concerned. The history behind the releases makes them worth collecting imo. Pete Smith wrote a piece, (when he was a young lad) for Record Collector that recounts John Anderson's involvement in the logo. If you have 20...keep em Mate, get the others and complete the set. thumbsup.gif

Spot on - never paid more than £20 for one - and that was the Sam & Kitty so that I could complete the run....

Nabay has fetched the most in recent years - over £100 - but that was obviously caused by nut jobs having to get the full set as quickly as possible on eBay.

Average price / value is probably a tenner. Demos slightly more.

I often wondered if there were any test presses that never made it to release? was suprised at the time that cecil washington never made a release, there was a rumour going round that they tried for vickie baines, but was stopped by the owners of the track, anyone shed any light on that :rolleyes:

I got the album, "talk of the grapevine" cant even remember whats on it :yes:

At one stage i had all the issues, albums (even the cassette of the 1st) and all the printed demos( some later ones were stickers over the issues)

Never thought they would fetch much, i just loved going down to your local shop at the time and buying the new releases and picking up the demos at niters. Just a brilliant series of releases bar a few, i still have all the demos and would never think of parting with them..

The 3rd one has the Detroit map - (US Motown 45s style) on the cover don't it.

I think the second one is the most in-demand, great cover (I did know who the artist was on the cover but I can't recall now :thumbsup: ) and different style than the other 2, laminated also but the other 2 weren't.

Not sure which of the 3 is the rarest though??

Got quite a few of `em missen including Lester Tipton, Stanley Woodruff and many others. A legacy from my teenage years-I spent quite a while trying to collect `em all..(but failed)

For durability and sound quality over time you can`t beat British -even if they aren`t (for the most part on this label) original sixties/seventies releases..

Releasing Vickie Baines would have meant dealing with the notorious Alan Klein (ex Beatles and Rolling Stones Manager at one time), owner of Abko which owned Cameo-Parkway and he was the most litigious person in the history of the Music Business. I doubt very much if he'd have even bothered about a small release on a little UK label, so John saved himself a whole heap of bother by not releasing that one!

The second one has the map cover - the third one paraodies Atalntic's This Is Soul and is the rarest of the 3, though that was mainly for To The Ends Of The Earth and as son as that was booted, demand dropped of again. 15, 20 and 25 for the three lp's.

As stated a great UK label with some seriously good choices chosen for release, and super sound quality

Just out of interest....how much are these worth if ..out of interest...someone had all three albums??...just being nosy....Delxxxx

When I was working in K-Two Records in the Pentagon, Chatham, the RCA rep used to come in with all the Grapevine stuff on demo and say 'Jo, you like all this old rubbish, don't you.....here you go, have them'....they never sold well down South and he was fed up of carting extra weight round in his sales folio. Happy happy days :) Still got them somewhere....must find them.

And also nice to see that RCA put a few "bonus" tracks on their Grapevine LPs which weren`t issued as Grapevine 45`s- obviously to boost the album sales. I remember people who were primarily Gravevine singles collectors also buying the albums for stuff like "To The Ends Of The Earth" and such..

no jo,,the ones i seen were 10" inch acetates at wigan tiffs circa 82..i think john vincent had them...appaerntly they were sent to certain djs..

No there are a few dubbed from vinyl - in fact I;d say over half of them - thats why the Tomangoes was scrapped, the quality was poor having been dubbed off a VG++ single

btw I do have one or two test pressings and a handful of demos of some of the later series for sale.

I know i've posted it before BUT here it is again :lol:

Fascinating Fact - Grapevine 2000 only made Test Pressings of releases 100 to 112 (& strangely enough #153!) Only 14 out of a total of 63 releases! 100-104 are blank labels & 105-112 (& #153) have custom made labels.

Hi Harry, i have the later Grapevine 2000 series 45' of Percy Stone's "Chained" that was demo only, but(i believe) was withdrawn (for whatever reasons?).

Always wanted the Betty Boo 45', the one that was an unreleased thing (once again i think it was unreleased till grapevine cut it)

Out on the Floor Tonight (Inferno 001) featuring Dobie Gray, Frank Beverley, The Cairstairs, Four Perfections etc.

Keeping the Faith Vol.2 (PRC5573) featuring Joy Lovejoy, Mitch Ryder, Casualeers and sleeve notes by Tilly Rutherford (one time associate of Pete Waterman?)

Chess/Janus Mobile Discotheque Vol.1(6310 128) featuring Denise Lasalle, Fontella Bass, Soulful Strings, Tony Clarke etc.

The Best of Northern Tracks (Spark SRLM 502) featuring Tommy Hunt, Gene Latter, Wigans Ovation??)

Stax Northern Disco Sounds(PYE label with STXB3002 number) featuring sleeve note by DJ Frank(Ian Dewhirst) and tunes by William Bell,Johnny Taylor, Major Lance etc.

I also have some of the first releases of albums under the Kent label from the 6T's/100Club crew(For Dancers Only, For Dancers Also, Moving On Up).

The old 100 series that is.

Early 2007 I bought an entire run of the original Grapevines, 80% of them being demos off ebay for £345. All mint/EX+. As soon as I got them I split them up and listed them individually on ebay and got a combined price of £728.....one of the quickest and easiest £250 I ever made laugh.gif . Though do sometimes wish I had kept them, as has been said some great tracks on those 45s.

None really worth anything but Stax Northern Disco sounds is notable for only having 2 northern tracks on it isn't it Ian :thumbsup:
