A really cheapo LP by the O'jays,One of those £1.50 albums cant remember the label,but they had them on sale in garages and newsagents,

The songs were "4 for the price of 1" and "I dig your act",

Also R Dean Taylor "Theres a ghost",and another tune thats not really a Northern record called "Prisencolinensinsinainciusol", By Adriano Celantano,My sister heard them both at Bolton Palais,and bought the singles,I just put the two of them together,she told me it was Northern Soul,So I blame her :rolleyes:

This always reminds me of Bolton Playmate around 75, thursday night under 18's club, :rolleyes: along with Love Machine - Miracles

a mates older brother had, cum a la be stay-chubby checker, they say-ovations and hey seniorita by the impressions, along with them and mr penguin at the youth club i,m still getting excited hearing new records some 30 odd years later, sad innit

It was a cassette I got from the NME in 1986 called Feet Start Dancing.

I grew up with reggae and soul music, I say grew up, I mean listened to at youth club discos etc from the age of 12 and by the age of 14 I had several records which I didn't know where classed as Northern Soul but the first reciord I bought that I could really tell the difference - it wasn't typical Motown - was The Jo©ker by Butch Baker on Cherub bootleg...I played it a thousand times. Probably why I'm a bit mad now I suppose. That was in early 1974.

Not myself but my wifes first introduction to Northern was the above mentioned Al Wilson track.She also loves to dance to "Out On The Floor",Lesley was and still is a Bon Jovi nutcase but likes a bit of Soul when she is in the mood to dance,

Just goes back to the oldies v newies,threads really,Many people will try to slag these sounds off as commercial.And indeed yes they are to some of us,but to many newer people getting into Northern Soul,These are the tunes that get them hooked!

Just a personal thought not in any way trying to reopen that old thread for god sake

Jimmie Raye "Philly dog around the world" on an 80s compilation LP my dad gave me.

It was mostly the stompers at first that got my attention.

About 74-75 our local disco did an hours soul spot from about 9.30 always starting with frankie Valli - Your Ready Now,

but the one that sucked me in was Frankie Beverley- If that's what you wanted

I Got Something Good, Sam and Kitty around June 1973 at the George Hotel in Peterborough. They had a Sunday night disco with Steve Allen spinning the tunes. I have to thank Martin Allpress for taking me there and changing my life forever. Keep the Faith mate. Tony T BONE. Spreading the Faith down under.

All the Motown stuff played at school disco 68/69 and the local youth clubs. :)

Loads of tunes I truly love, my fav Northern dancer being Franky Beverley - If that's what you wanted but the track that always gives me Goose Bumps & makes me shiver like an emotional cripple is the Temptations - Beauty's only skin deep, what a tune & what a voice Mr Ruffin had. :)

It was either Melba Moore "Magic touch" or Hesitations "Im not built that way", the harmony at the end is what did it for me, SWEET

The first tune that got me investigating Soul music was "Back In My Arms Again" - which The Jam did live and the b side of The Modern World. That got me 'investigating' Soul Music - Sam and Dave, The Supremes, Temps etc etc

The thing that got me into Northern was after swopping tapes with a guy who is on here I think - Martin T. He would send me cassettes of The James Taylor Quartet and 'sneak' a soul tune on the end and they sounded like nothing else I'd ever heard!

So, with a deep breath, and after hearing it in The Western Star Domino club in Bristol, I forked out a massive £5 for "Cigarette Ashes" off a certain John Manship around 1985, then went crazy with a £7 purchase of "Smokey Joes La La" by Googie Rene. Still got them both and play them out occasionally :lol:

First soul record...Jr Walkers "What Does It Take"

First northern...The Superlatives "I Still Love You" at my cousins house, I was 14 and that was it, I was gone...forever and ever...AMEN :ohmy:

Kind of grew up with soul, reggae,ska - compulsory really for anyone of my age growing up in Wolves.

My dad tells me that even as a 4 / 5 year old I'd play up to watch Dusty Springfield on the telly and, remember those 'hits' lps that weren't the original artist, i wore out any junior walker, four tops tracks on those...

The first northern record i can remeber really setting the fire off was LA - Better Use Your Head. There used to be a disco / soul night at a working men's club in Essington - not sure if it's the one Max uses for 'Goodtimes' - and having bunked in the track came on as we walked in to witness Gethro - amazing dancer - doing his stuff. I can recall the moment like it was yesterday - just blew me away!!

First heard Dance to the music Sly and the family stone,my sister won it in a dance competition at the Broken Wheel in Retford never really looked back.but baby don,t you weep does it for me.Introduced Ann my missus to Northern with cracking up.
