Soulboy - The Movie. You've Seen It So . .

I've given it 8 out of 10 as I believe it has ended up pretty much what it set out to be.

That is - a coming of age/right of passage/teenage angst film with a strong Wigan/Northern Soul theme running through it.

It has a low-budget feel but don't think that's a bad thing as it suits the era.

If there is nothing in here you can relate to - then you weren't inhabiting the same planet as me in the early 1970's.

Anyone in the Glasgow area - it's getting a showing at Glasgow Film Theatre on Friday night - 11pm. Advertised as a "preview showing" on the GFT's listing page, its just a one off showing.

He did try to sound convincing about the soul scene, but did cringe when talking about rooms full of 50 year olds.

I rang both the local multiplex cinemas to me ( Doncaster and Sheffield ) to see if the film is to be screened , and both of them stated that they have nothing scheduled .

Some dates including Sheffield (3rd-9th September) are starting to appear on the film website. Cannot see it coming to an outpost like Scunthorpe Malc, even though we have always had a loyal be it not too large following of the scene here.

The dates for Sheffield must have been sorted after I contacted the Sheffield multiplex .

I have just checked the Soulboy website , and the Sheffield screenings are at The Showroom Workstation on Paternoster Row , and not the multiplex near the Arena .

No wonder the lass I spoke to at the multiplex dod not have a clue what I was on about :D

Couldn't agree more Steve. The actor actually does a reasonable job for someone who hasnt been emersed in a scene for the past 35 years, and whitnessed it's eveolution over the same period. I seriously doubt anyone could cram that into approximately 40 seconds of an 8 minute interview!

Some things he said were wrong, but some weren't. The guy was taught by Liam and Keb on the dance front, and had lots of other 'scenesters' to learn from, well established people i might add. Each to their own though, if you think he's c*nt who knows f*ck all about northern soul then you're probably right :thumbsup:

As for the guy at the end of the clip, watch the film and you'll see the context. I think the phrase 'artistic license' was used in the interview.

Sorry to start another thread on this but I haven't got time to trawl other threads to see if my question can be answered there.

The Soulboy official site has a number of limited venues around the country starting tonight and the nearest for me is Wigan which is not that easy to get to from where I live and I can only go next Wednesday evening (the film is only on in Wigan until 9th Sept). The site says look out for other venues to be added but I don't want to miss it at Wigan if say Manchester is not going to be added later.

Does anyone know for certain if other towns/cities will be added or does anyone know how I can ask the production company this question as the site does not seem to have a 'contact us' button?

Dunno, but it's just had its premier in leicester square and a special flashmob was specially arranged for it. Appeared on my facebook wall a few minutes ago.

Went to see it at the Empire cinemas at robin park Wigan this afternoon with the wife, the lad (who is 20 ) and his girlfriend (18)

I liked the film though I thought it a bit cheesy. None the less it was an enjoyable 90 mins with some funny bits but the dance off was or seemed a bit naff.

I went to the casino but only at the end of the 70s so missed the glory days as it were, but the sceans were reminisant of what I remember.

The wife loved it but she wasnt looking at it the way I did because she never went so she couldnt do comparisons except for the sound track.

My lad on the other hand thought it was realy good and has now asked me to teach him the basics of northern soul dancing, he is very slim like I still am but he hasnt got the same flexabilty as I have so he will have to get some stretches done, LOL.

His girl freind on the other hand didnt like it at all but she did like the music .

Anyway, we all have our own memories and opinions of what we think and take on things, I have mates who are older than me and remember the origanal mod days and say Quad was shite, but not being there I thought and still do think Quad is the best film about mods ever made, maybe the younger crowd will think the same about this film.

I would love to be able to form my own opinion of "Soulboy" but I live in Surbiton, Surrey and the nearest screenings to me are in Exeter. Or possibly Sheffield, I haven't worked out the actual mileage...

Perhaps this poll should be parked and reopened in January 2011 when everyone can pop down to Blockbusters?

Five cinemas in the whole of the UK - and two of them in Ireland. Doesn't matter how bad this film might or might not be, it's a British film and deserves a better shot at putting bums on seats than that...

Sadly Tony , that will not count with the people in charge of the mainstream UK cinemas . They will opt every time for a no -brainer like " the Expendables " , than go with a " Souboy " .

The screenings for the film looks likely to remain with the smaller / independent cinemas .

I wasn't really thinking about the mainstream cinemas, Malc - it's not even being supported by the Curzon or Picturehouse chains, whose cinemas in Richmond (Curzon) Clapham and Brixton (Picturehouse) I tend to frequent over the Odeon's and Vue's that are within a much closer driving distance. Even the localish Cineword in Wandsworth, which usually offers a broad mix of mainstream and indie, hasn't gone for it.

From where I live I can and do go to cinemas in Richmond, Kingston, Guildford, Brixton, Clapham, Wandsworth, Feltham, Staines, Epsom, Acton, Croydon, Crawley and I'm not even averse to the odd trip out to Brighton or Tunbridge Wells when the mood takes me. With the number of NS aligned venues currently operating in the UK , have each one show it , which then should guarantee it reaching an audience :ohmy:

Soulboy the Movie

Well after much trumpeting and waiting I finally got a chance to see the movie. We went as a family consisting of my self, my wife Carol and my 17 year old son Zak the venue was the Showroom & Workstation smack bang in the centre of Sheffield and we were in the wonderful company of "The Tarn Posse" who had come mob handed from the beautiful metropolis we know as Barnsley.

Anticipation was the best way to describe how I felt as the curtains parted and the lights went down, Soul Source had already set the stage and I didn't quite know what to expect, I think every one was conscious about the possible impact the film could have and no one wanted to leave feeling let down or used?

I will do my best to critique the movie in a moment but first I will say that we all enjoyed the film and none of us felt cheated or used and that was a big relief.

The Movie

The plot is described as a coming-of-age drama set in the 1970s Northern Soul underground music scene.

I found that the script was either overambitious or that the director was unskilled enough to explore some of the characters introduced within the sub plots. The sub story of "Fish shop Bobby" was half hearted to say the least and left me scratching my head as to why hint at this little vignette as it started quite strong and fizzled out as if it had run out of allotted time? The acting and direction was quite confusing at this stage, we where presented with a credible performance from Joanne Hartley who played Monica the 'battered" chip shop wife (sorry), she navigated quite capably giving a good performance yet her co star in the shape of Brian McCardie was nothing more than a clich pantomime villain, I was reminded of the butcher from The League of gentlemen.

Our lead man and hero Martin Compston played Soulboy Joe McCain giving a more than adequate performance coming across as a likable lad yet there was hints at boredom yet know real show of teenage angst. Nichola Burley, his reason d'ªtre gave an uncomfortable and unconvincing performance as the Northernsoul "Vamp" who inspired our Joe to become a Soulboy, I am not too sure if this was down to the bad direction or the bad script?

Felicity Jones played Mandy Hodgson the "ugly duckling" girl next door, frustrated artist and Casino regular, her character was over cluttered yet Felicity Jones more than coped with some excellent acting resisting the trap of over egging the pudding, she came across a as likable character and it was great to have quality acting amongst other flat and ill equipped actors who where struggling with a scrip that some times appeared to be written by four or five different people?

This is where the film falls flat on its bottom a bit, there is such disparity between the actor's skills and the script not quite knowing what kind of film it is, we go from whimsical to serious without any real substance and this relegated the movie to a rainy afternoon on DVD.

Would I recommend the movie, sadly no, certainly not for a special trip to the pictures.

I think this is a fun film, on the Northernsoul side I would have to write "Could have tried harder", the mix of old clips and new was well done yet some times it came across as the Kids from Fame, at one time we see a Blues Brothers type jump up and touch your toes.

The dance off at the end was probably the most unforgivable own goal of the movie.

Upon first seeing the trailer for the film Soulboy the excitement felt by all the northern soul fans about a film that captured the magic that was felt at Wigan casino was unmatchable. Finally a film that could describe what northern soul meant to that generation. The film on a whole was very predictable, and seemed to be just a big build up to the final dance off. In my opinion the film did not know what kind of film it wanted to be and seemed to stray away from the initial goal of capturing the feel of Wigan casino, in the end it did not do this. The film on the whole was a good watch but that did not stop the disappointment by the Wigan veterans after being promised a film that could be based on them, but unfortunately the film concentrated on the love triangle instead of the music on which the film boasted it would be. But despite the all the failed promises, the film had a good mixture of comedy and seriousness. One thing that I must praise Soulboy for is the range of the audience I sat in the cinema at the age of 16 being equally entertained as my nearly 50 year old father. Soulboy will not go down in the record books for being a revolutionary film but it also will not go down for being the worst film of all time.

Please tell me that the one in the grey mohair whistle , is not Steve Proudlove :ohmy:

Some of it certainly reminded me of being 17 and back in the early 70's.

Then again some of it was, as they say, ' artistic license' , true for most entertainment.

But it's not a film about 'Northern Soul' , it is a film about 'boy meets girl' set in the 70's with a background of Northern Soul, as such it was brilliant to hear some of the music played out in a venue that wouldn't normally hear it.

I'll get the DVD when it's available and play it every 10 years or so just to remind me of what it was like to be 17 and naive and slim and full of the joy of hearing certain tracks for the first time :D
