This variation has been discussed before but I can't remember what the outcome was - it sure looks like a bootleg but is it?

Isnt this the Germany copy. I have both will compare them later.

seen only one other before and it was defo original with Stamped in matrix on vinyl as opposed to the usual styrene.

The Belgians did quite a lot of dodgy boots including Okeh presses

Its a proper one........Todmorden Tim had loads of this variant forsale a few years back

It might well have come from the US, but it's highly likely that it's a (Pittsburgh) bootleg.

Let's not forget that no end of records on Motown and other R&B labels were booted at the time.

BOTH of those have to be bootlegs. I was in Chicago and Detroit the whole year that was out and never saw that variation. I also traveled across USA that year and never saw it. I never saw any Ric Tic official pressings on that design. The original may have been a US boot.

I know that Motown did that. I didn't know that Ed Wingate did that as well.

a big seller in the usa and could easily have been pressed in another state maybe we`ll never know for certain... i cant recall ever seeing one until about 5 years ago tho.....not that that means anything

just two question : why would they press it in Canada for the US market when there are thousands of copies of it ?

Hi All All I can add to my comments is this, back in the 70s, when I had a decent collection, I was lucky to have a job that bought me to be in touch with some of the top US SOUL STARS who toured the UK, and because of time spent with them, I learnt quite a lot of info, the RIC TIC LABLE was a favourite of Alexis Korner, and I remember one breakfast with him and Jimmy Helms talking about DETROIT, both were impressed by my knowledge of soul music (basic stuff to you lot) I am sure that it was Alexis who told me that many of Detroit records were pressed up in Canada, (the old brain teaser, if you are in Detroit and walk due South, what's the next country you land up in? Canada) so it's pressing plant is used, why not compare your DETROIT RECORDS with the RIO RECORDS and see if you have any examples of this, sadly I can't do this for you,

About the lines on records, I worked with KOOL & the GANG, and they had their roots with ED KYSER, if you come across a copy of the SUPERLATIVES I STILL LOVE YOU with lines on comes from the same pressing plant, in Canada?

it wouldn't have been booted retrospectivly for the northern scene, it would have been booted at time of release, as were a lot of records in the u.s. a lot of beatles on capitol are boots, if you were a distributor / or owner of a couple of record shops why buy stock in when you can press them up yourself and keep all the profit, i think the general concensus of opinion regarding this ric tic release when last discussed on here was that it was a bootleg originating from the pitsburgh area

the reo copy is obviously the canadian release. if they had been pressed in canada for export to the usa it would probably been on ric tic and not reo.......if indeed this is the case

hardly off topic, but anyway, bottom line is, bootlegging of currant releases did go on in the states in the 50's and 60's, getting records pressed back then was very cheap, its still relativley cheap nowdays, theres a pressing plant that advertises on here that will do you 200 45's for 500 quid

True, think of the likes of Epitome of Sound, Jetsons and Tangeers etc., which had the raised numbers beneath the label as a security measure, the daisy stamp on Capitol stuff getting smaller to deter bootleggers...sure there's more...

There's another thread with this suggested in it if I remember correctly.

The Canadian issue was on REO. If this was pressed in Canada, it was paid for by Ed Wingate, made to distribute to the US market, in a rush job, because all the Detroit-Area plants were booked, and he wanted them sent to his distributors immediately. Motown did that with a Marvelettes and a Miracles record (they were pressed on a solid yellow Tamla script print label (with no globes logo). That looks like a boot as well, but it was a legit release. This may have been the same situation with Wingate. Usually this happens with a big hit, when store orders outstrip store stock on hand, and the orders at ALL the local plants (Archer, American(Detroit) Columbia (Terre Haute, Ind.)) are backed up resulting in several days to a week or two delay.

I think I can throw some light on this strange press. I've only found this variation in Los Angeles. It was common practice for big hits to be bootlegged by the "backdoor". I mean when this hit the charts someone in L.A. decided to press it and supply the shops, usually from the trunk of a car.

I think it's a 60s bootleg or it may have been a legit West Coast press because shipping 1000s of 45s from Detroit to the West Coast would have been very expensive. But there is no New York variation presses of the 45, so my thoughts are it was a 60s boot..and there are quite a few of this type of pressing. Linda Jones - Hypnotized - on Loma vinyl jumps to mind..

There was almost no chance of the authorities catching these small bootleggers. The "posed" as employees or representatives of the record company whose records they were booting. There was plenty of that going on all through the '50s and '60s.
