So, we're in 2012, and the 'funky' stuff has been in vogue for some years now, which is kinda crap really because if you collect all styles it always was, However, the mighy Beat Ballad, or serious sixties slowie now seems out of pace, and I F***** hate that!!!!

My feeling is There should be a back lash!!! So Brothers and Sisters, Before you buy your next 45 that's got that new trendy forward thinking dj description next to it, think closely, there is no going back, if you turn your back once again and don't choose a sixties beat ballad, the memories will start to fade, let me just list a couple to stirr that memory, and ask you state your allegience below, list em, and list em proud!!!!

That was probably me, Dave and I do take back the 'you lot' in my post as I know many people do of course go out. And so what gives others God given right to criticise other music - Mal called it crap in his opening post, he didn't praise it. And those that don't go out refer to it as 'funky shite' etc can only hear it if they go out because they wont play it at home, but then they don't go out and so therefore don't hear it so why bloody moan about it?! But it was the thread title really that did it LOL

Humungous record. Always loved it. Used to play it amongst some others on Saturday afternoons at Hitsville. Glass of beer, whack it up loud, relax, kick back, and wait for the nodding looks of appreciation from the sun baked terrace. Happy days!!

Slow is what a ballad is.

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of a sufficient tempo, however slow, to be able to have a shuffle to as opposed to a ballad that you might feel inclined to only listen to.

No matter anyway, as all of the stuff listed is right up my street.

Nothing else to add other than Bobby King is a crossover record and Jessie Fisher was played 20 years ago which makes it Northern with a twist.

And in nature of sharing, one of my favourite, although sure I have that on crossover shelf, dilemmas...

Always been one of my faves, I think Ady H played this one out rather than me, tempo terrorists look away now.

Has anybody mentioned Tommy Hunt yet? the hold on track is different on the Atlantic release 45 to that on one of the early Kent LP's, cant remember but one is more of a beat ballad than an out and out ballad, I think.... anyhow they are all F*** Great... also add parade of Broken Heartaches to that list..

Dave....not sure they can......it,s not a matter as to whether we like a tune or not.....it,s the style in which the singer sings it....soon as they go all DEAN MARTIN on us.......it becomes a beat ballad

I suppose it's all in the individual's interpretation eh? For me it's not the singer sounding like Dean Martin that is the attraction. It's the dramatic effect of using highs and lows, often using timpani, the chink of the rhythm guitar, it's a build up to a more aggressive chorus, and the often 'echoey' sound that gives an impression of space.

Here's another that I've always loved. Could fall into loads of pigeon holes if you that were your want:

But for me ,it's about meeting in the middle ....the soulful funk i buy into is not the same as out and out James Brown "i feel good " or blaxploitation shaft sounding funk.

Its a fine line and that's where some people get confused .

IMHO yes they have a place at the end of a spot or the end of a night if they have to be played out ever at a venue, failing that they are fantastic for doing the ironing to or driving back from a venue, other than that they are not for me as I still believe the northern scene is,was,and always will be a dance scene first!!

I love it all....Beat Ballads are brilliant, but need to be played sensibly within a night/set....IMO BB lend themselves more to small intimate dark clubs, were their atmospheric brilliance can raise the general atmosphere of a venue/dance floor if dropped strategically....

I agree with Nev on the funk thing too....many people misunderstand the genre & again, when dropped in amongst everything else can set a room on fire....Im a soul fan first & foremost, altho I prefer dancers in a club environment & I enjoy most things that get played out when programmed sensibly within a set....

It's hard to accept for some people ,but in truth ,everything as it's place, and in the right place at the right time is the crux.

I can remember once asking Soul Sam if he would'nt mind playing Norris Vines or Jimmy Bo Horne at a nighter ...he politely told me that he would love to ,but did'nt think they were right for the time of night he was dj'n .

Looking back and in hindsight ,he was totally right .

Chill out venues and get together venues, put on by people who just wanna share soul music with like minded people,are my choice for the slower stuff , big room venues and all nighters are and should be mainly uptempo dancers ,with a slowie chucked in to stop people from having heart attacks from refusing to accept growing old gracefully

P.s .. For anyone who wants to know ... no i did'nt give Sam a mouth full of abuse or a disgusted look ..that's what disrespectful do at plastic soul nights

Mid-tempo if you ask me. Great underplayed record mind. Last one I remember giving it any serious spins was Steve Smith Bretby era.

i play it once a flood chalky.....i had it on a tape early 90`s covered as mathew barnett..... not sure who the tape was from....probably steve smith as i had a few from him at that time
