Do people still collect records as much today as they did?

It's just that it is always a tug getting rid of a record and don't get me wrong I've flogged a fair few of mine over the years - but I see a lot of action on here with sales etc - and it looks like people buy and sell a lot more these days.

1. Is it true?

2. And if so, is it because more people dj these days and are forever trying to freshen their sets up.

3. Am I paranoid?

Getting a bit older and a bit more 'free cash' allows you to patch up your collection with the good stuff. Trying to sell on the other hand is a tad more difficult. Only sell the ones I don't really want or play which coincidentally everyone else is doing the same. The good stuff goes for more than ever these days but the mediocre stuff goes for a lot less. - Not fair !!!

I think people collect records for different reasons, as to whether it's as popular today as, what 10 years ago? On our scene, I don't think it ever changes, it all 'revolves' around records.

I don't collect Northern records, I just buy and sell them.

I do collect Ska & Reggae records, and there are two reasons for this.

Firstly, I like to get my favourite records and then I like to play my favourite records whenever I feel the need.

Secondly, and this is worrying, I collect the red and white Island label and I literally collect the label. This means even if the 45 is rubbish, I will buy it. A lot of people do this, collecting labels, and very few labels have a run where every record is excellent. So why pay money for something you'll never play?

im always on the lookout for more records,most of which i keep some i try and sell on to fund my habit(there ive said it)hope that makes her happy

have probably bought more records last year than i have for ages, a right across the board selection but not bought any big money records. as i know in about 3 years time i will be selling the whole collection off and its doubtful i would recoup my outlay, tho i can hope to break even

i love buying records,very rarely pay a lot of money though,just buy what i like whatever genre doesnt matter as long as i like it,been buying more in the past few years than ever before but only when funds allow,i certainly wouldnt get into financial trouble because of it,if i havent bought a record for a few weeks i feel a bit weird,craving vinyl so i buy one or two and am ok for a while an then the craving starts again,i very very rarely sell anything though,i think im a bit of a hoarder really,good thread

I have collected records even prior to my introduction to "Northern Soul" almost 40 years ago, primarily Reggae and Motown, but it has to be said, having had to part with several collections for varying reasons during the 70's/80's/90's,and since selling my last decent Northern collection in 2001it became a case of if I parted with my last handful of favourite Motown pieces it would have been "goodnight"!!!.......Alas the bug didn't desert me, and from almost collecting the larger part of the 60's US Motown portfolio, I eventually drifted into Detroit (in general) which I am patiently "chipping away" at! Whilst it is extremely doubtful I will ever get near the "home straight" from a collecting perspective, my interest in collecting is greater than ever, thus my retirement date seems to be evermore distant....

I do the same with Doctor Bird - even worse because quite a few (even the good stuff) records have an awful sound quality. But the label is a beauty.

Since I stopped full on DJ'ing I've pretty much let go of all the bigger end stuff as I personally as much as I Ioved some of the records I could not justify sitting on thousands of pounds worth, however the collecting bug never leaves you as now I like to dabble on buying and selling, playing Ebay etc. and I've gone full circle and pick up nice USA Motown and related labels, funny old game lol

We must all be paranoid I reckon - I've collected records all of my life - well at least since senior school age of about eleven. It is definitely a 'bug' that is hard to cast off. Even if I attend small indie gigs in Newcastle I buy the bands single if they have one on offer - I see it as helping them out as well! I've collected literally allsorts and all genres especially Clash, Bowie, 60's beat/pop, reggae/ska and Soul or as we call it Northern !!

I can say I am officially addicted to collecting Northern and our in house joke when the mail arrives is her saying -'not another bloody white promo' Of course it's not to imply I only collect white promos, but you get the drift I hope.

I don't sell and have every record I've ever bought. Northern has dragged me into rnb, doo wop and loads of other asects of our scene that I'm quite happy to embrace if it means I can buy another record. NOTE - I only buy it if I like it as well so some of my sets will never contain that so called must have modern piece of shite, cos I don't like it!

Sadly the download generation will never get the buzz of seeing a Bell Sound or Sheldon stamp in a run off groove, or a majestic L A Beat issue with such beautiful siver and red it makes you weep. They'll never know who wrote it, played on it or where it came from and they probably don't fkn care as they move onto the next disposable, twenty second thing in their lives.

Record buying and selling will never end although I think we can say it has rapidly slowed down due to the corporate environment running the music world, however when the digital armagedon takes place thankfully I'll still be playing my records on proper decks and Dansettes.

One last thing and I don't mean to hijack the thread as it's covered loads elsewhere - As a collector it's got to be OVO at events for me!!

there's certainly a grain of truth in people trying to freshen there collections, lot of folk are really skint at the moment dont forget too.

Collected records of all genres since i was 14, pop rock n roll soul 45s lps everything really.The mrs buys at auctions regularly so come home to boxs of stuff on a regular basis.Have just had a week off due to a planning hold up on a job so had a chance to look thru 2500 singles 5oo albums she picked up for 70 quid early dec.Kept 40 singles motown 70s soul and some early very nice 60s pop eps 12 motown albums,priced em up at £600/700.Skipped the rest,still buy northern out and about mainly british these days.Have to say she has come home with some belters over the last couple of years.

I like different kinds of music,but I've only ever been interested in collecting northern/rare soul,but I use the word collecting loosely,I chase a record until I've got it,and when I'm sick to the sight of it,it gets moved on...and so the carousel keeps turning! cos there's always another record to chase!

ive collected records for years, but ive never been a hoarder of 45s, so if i dont play them i will sell/trade to get something i will play

works for me as most collectors know that the collecting habit only really goes one way "more expensive wants"

yes i still have records that i dont really play but unless im really desperate they stay under the bed!! lol

If I'm honest, I stopped collecting soul singles a few years back. They sit under my bed and once in a blue moon I drag a case out and play a few before sliding them back. I really should flog them on.

These days I've become a bit of an obsessive collector of modern ska and skapunk, it's current and I'm enjoying it. I just know at some point I'll get bored with that too

My problem is i collect the lot,northern,jazz,freakbeat,latin,psych and library lps.Thank god my compulsive buying was years ago.I rob Peter to pay Paul sell some to buy some....just sorted 200 ska/reggae doubles inc crabs,Dr Birds,Escort etc.I managed to get a few today in the local charity shop....one of them was Love Dimension-I found out on uk Black Bear from 78 in a uk Revolution rocksteady sleeve!!

I have to confess that my personal addiction is any soul on a British label,regardless of what it sounds like.I also collect British labels, again it doesn't matter what it sounds like if I need it to complete a series I'll buy it.I also collect general Northern but only if I like it and get it a reasonable price.Never sell anything on the basis that the day I sell it for a fiver it will go massive and be worth a fortune.

I bought a massive (250,000)-count 45 collection 5-plus years ago, and when I find something that's in there that hits my fancy (60s or 70s soul 45s) and it's in good nick, into my collection it goes.

I also have a few mates that buy and sell records that I do swaps with to get the records I want. I also buy things when all of these options don't exist.

I think its a hard one that, and unfortunately I have just the one copy, sorry mate the post was slightly misleading, my multiples are mostly duke, all the early stuff, along with foreign releases of the same Duke tracks again, and again, and again...I never get tired of the Bobby's voice and my only regret is I could not be bothered to get off my arse in 2003 and rock up to the Albert hall to see him sing...

been buying records since i was 10 and had them bought for me before that from the age of about 5..and even played my dads before that...only time i tried to collect all a label or band was when i was a teen into two tone and punk stuff,can remember standing in arcades bored which my latest 7" pic sleeve while my mates put their pocket money in the pacman machine ...couldnt afford much so got my first criminal record shoplifting vinyl when only a couple of norwich shops were left leaving the vinyl in the sleeves...only one the week after we were caught!!...had a good thing going making a list at school the week before...except i used to play them at home first and keep a lot of em!....

now i just buy if i like and 90% of the time stuff i can also play out...and definatley dont nick off any dealers or from shops!!

got a few boxes of 70s in the loft kept becuase of nostalgia and they aint worth anything....occasionally sell from my collection but getting harder and harder and only if ive spent too much on new stuff

All well here mate. I hope things are fine with you and her indoors!

I used to have a decent collection mate. I stopped collecting at one point and sold a lot of stuff when I was with my missus to get some jobs done on the house etc. Then had some stuff nicked - some nice things, and then lost a lot in the gas explosion (that's another story). Have some bits left and have been buying again recently - not big ticket stuff and not necessarily northern. I like good soul music basically. Mid tempo 70's kind a stuff is my preferred bag.

I know you have some nice stuff cos I've seen some of your playlists - I think that's how I first met you!

I keep them in a spare garage. There's no room in the house. I'm sorting out the 45s and only keeping 60s/70s soul bits, so loads of 70s/80s chart hits, some country -- out it goes.
