Not being one of the 'Casino Kids' I never did get all the pop crap that was played there in the 70's.

Thankfully, most of that rubbish died a death on the scene many years back, however Peggy Marsh still seems to get plays.

Never got her at all mesen (in soul terms at least). She was massive in Germany & Japan, sold millions of records in both countries. She made lots of tracks in German & Japanese and toured both countries (she seemed to visit Germany to play live / TV gigs a number of times a year from around 64 thru to 73).

Going by the titles of some of her German outings, she seemed to be a bit of an Anglophile

...... but even that doesn't get her into my good books.

Mind you, she seemed to like flashing her thighs back then, so she can't have been all bad ..........

I was a Wigan kid, and loved "If You Love Me", it was right for the time, the beginning was just great, and perfect to dance to.

To be honest, I have a german copy, still play it and enjoy it now!

Everyone has their own tastes, which is a good thing, and for some of us, a lot of what we like is due to the memories attached to it.

Never lost the respect for the old guard from the pre-Wigan era.

Sceneman posted on the "Your first exposure to NS" thread on 27 February about him going to the Scene Club in London in 1963 and seeing British RnB bands live there.......right where it all started.

It seems that some people who came later than Wigan have a real chip on their shoulder and can't resist sticking the boot in.

You don't see the "gay gordons / happy clappers / norman soul trousers / WC boys" slagging off their predecessors or their music.

It was a fashion/club/dance culture first and foremost and not an anorak/internet troll fraternity......no wonder some people prefer to live in the past.

I have a British RCA Demo of "if you love me" and it has never failed in over 30 years to fill the floor when ever I have had the chance to play it. Where as I have played many a big so called Soul Nighter Tune which has cleared the floor. Too many people knock what we used to listen and dance too and it pisses me off. You had to be there back then to understand the reaction to some of these so called pop tunes that still have a place in many of our hearts. Yes we have moved on and we still love everything that's been played since but give it a rest especially if you never went to Wigan. You might be laughing about what your wearing and listening to today in another 30 yrs.

Spot on Dekka, they are. I think some people forget northern soul isn't always soul. Peggy March was massive at the time and brings back good memories for me. Without the 'pop crap' along side the soul we wouldn't have the breadth of music we have now.

Roburt, I'm afraid thats the same excuse used by many to justify thier abscences from the scene.  There are hundreds of Rare Soul fans who have managed to balance thier proffessional & family life without ever having to let either suffer.  I also think you are doing many people a terrible dis service by inferring that just because they went WC or other Northern/Rare Soul venues that they didnt also listed to 'real' soul music as you put it.

 

NS/Rare Soul is/was & always will be predominantly a 'black' dance music scene, occasionaly pop records get played if they have the right sound for the time & there have always been good 'blue eyed' & 'brown eyed' soul records played.

 

I'm not one for hankering back to the past constantly, WC was just another venue, albeit one of the most successful & best remembered.  But there were hundreds & hundreds of fantastic soul records played there, that massively out weigh the 'of the time' pop played, there have always been dodgy records played from every era, but to write off all the fantastic soul music played there in one sweeping, ill informed & incorrect statement is to do the venue a terrible dis service, not to mention the DJ's who on the whole, played fantastic, inovative soulful dance music.

 

Whist Im sure its unintentional, your soul 'superiority' complex tends to wind people up, so maybe a better choice of words & how you put things would result in a more positive response to some of your posts.

The likes of Peggy March and tunes of that ilk were the blue taper that lit the breakaway Rare Soul scene's fuse. It was the playlist reliance on bland pop records by DJs that should have known better that caused all-nighters like Stafford to raise the bar and get back to the real deal of progressive, real soul......

 

...and for that we should all be grateful to Peggy

I saw her 1999 (together with Dee Dee Sharp) in front of the twin towers NY playing a free open air gig and will never forget the day. More Pop then Soul for sure + Bert Brechts `Mack the knife`, but she was a fantastic entertainer.

So disrespectful to such a great club and the people who did so much to turn that club around during that period.Sure,mistakes were made but most seemed right at the time.The average age must have been 18 in those days,an age where"crash,bang,wallop was what most wanted.As always,other people's experiences become part of the learning curve for others.Why not focus on the positive,Mon,Wed,Fri early sessions,all nighter every Sat,Monthly Fri nighters,bi monthly Fri nighters,live acts,oh yes,and some of the best music ever to come from this scene..Morning!

name me ONE soul venue in the 70's that DIDNT play some white sounding 'pop soul' or blue eyed soul or whatever..everybody played some..as for the casino it did play some dreadful tunes sometimes but mostly a lot a great ones..proud to say i went and loved it!!

Interesting topic because as we all know WC was the only venue to play pop records I mean records like Lou Christie , Mood Mosaic weren't pop revivals from earlier venues oh no.

And we also all know that all the other venues had an over 25s only policy so no "kids" were ever allowed in. Yours must have been a difficult birth Roburt emerging at 25 years old quite painful for all involved I would imagine.

And the following wonderful Soul artists never had records played at Wigan did they oh no matey

Fair play Sheffsoul, they were all at it back then. And let's be truthful "Queen of fools" ain't exactly a soulful record is it....

 

I also remember walking miles to a Niter at St Albans fire station, and one of the DJs was jumping up and down and playing Sammy Davis Jr vocal to Hawaii 5-0, is that any more soulful than Peggy March.....Nope.
