No publishers credit, no writer, arranger or producer credits either, a label with so much lack of information we can only guess at it’s origins.

So let’s concentrate on the music hidden away in the grooves…and melt with instantly fluid horn intro as it’s met by a vocal at ease with itself, driven along by a constant prompting piano and the infectious horn riff punctuating the lyrics… welding the whole session into a “repeat” play dancer… the session has a “Carolinas” scent to the production..

We’ve audio’d the flipside too which somewhat pales by comparison but where on earth are you ever gonna hear it again..

Hi-lights Oh Lover Of Mine C/w Man On The Shelf

Determined about Detroit?.. check out this extremely rare 1963 vocal group Northern Soul treasure!

Topside is a sublime Smokey Robinson inspired mid-tempo NS dance groove dripping with Motor City elegance and poise. A tapestry of sweet, sweet vocals melt in a rippling testament of the ladies loyalty for her man overseas at war.

Hard to believe this 45 never sold, because it is a stand-out tune of it’s genre, benefiting from a highly polished Dale Warren arrangement, and yet another impressive Bob Hankins & D. Yancy collaboration on the lyrics and production.

Flip it over for another Motownesque production as Yancy ratchets up the pace and adds male vocals to proceedings to craft a hand-clapping, fingerpoppin’ dancer capturing the very essence of the Motor City early 60s sound!

We can find no evidence of E-Bay listings or even correct spelling of the group’s name, as it invariably gets listed in discographies as the Hi-Lites. Double-underlining it’s genuine rarity… click the silky soundfile to hear two sophisticated but long-passed-over jewels.

The soul merchants that ends next time is £161 already and there was a copy sold on ebay for just under £50 last week  , paid £20 for mine and still got it as it was the first tune i broke my £15 limit for in mid 90's lol

I know the toni ross isn't for everyone,but compared to  some high prices achieved lately on other 45's,I reckon 1k for the record is a good buy,it's rare,it's a dancer,the quality is there!

I had a UK issue copy, no middle and very second hand, but in the words of Rob Smith (he sold it to me if I remember correctly "plays ok". No idea what it would be worth now though...

The Carolinas "scent" mentioned in the Soul For Sale description is way off the mark as this 45 is from Phoenix.  JM seems to deride the flip, Dance Children Dance, but if you like a pounding garage dancer there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, albeit chalk and cheese perhaps compared to the other auction items.

I got that copy. Great copy. did a Photostat of missing label which i put with the record but not stuck it on

I think that went for a really good price for such a rare item. Do you have anymore info on them? It's a great record that's for sure.

The information is scant.  I assume the seller found the record, along with a few other obscure, mainly garage, 45's he was selling at the time, as stated at "Sidney J. Wakefield Custom Record Pressing Plant".  If memory serves me correctly the $404 sale price would have equated closer to £200 with the exchange rate at the time. (Either way Popsike only shows currency conversion based on current exchange rates so can be misleading.)

So IMHO Kev ,the majority of us are all guilty of the same crime ..you ,me and 99% of the soul scene !

Motives aside ,it is the scene that we are in and the monster we have all created .
