Looking for guaranteed rarity?
Look no further this STOCK copy only vocal-group Northern Soul has a life story that validates just that.
Allegedly, when in the late 70s Neil Rushton veteran record dealer/DJ/Label owner all round Soul-Entrepreneur approached Jack Ashford on the hope he would maybe have some of the “impossible” STOCK copies, Neil was informed that Jack had only been sent a few samples to OK before he paid for the press.
Neil was excited when Jack told him if you want to pay the pressing plant bill he can have the whole run, as reaction to his “Smith Brothers” samples had not indicated Radio airplay..
To this day it is one of Neil’s biggest regrets, that time constraints and other business stopped him from following up on Jack’s invite. Nobody knows what happened to the full Smith Brothers run, put it certainly did not hit the streets.
So we are left with just a few known STOCKERS and promo copies that do not have the fabulous “There Can Be A Better Way” side on it.
This was well over 30 years ago and we can think of no reason why this set in stone vignette would not raise this 45s rarity kudos quite a few notches..

RARE 1969 Jazz / Funk groove featuring David Crawford on flute guiding “Black Is” to serve up a heady mix of piano driven 60s Jazz/Funk as they deconstruct David Clayton-Thomas’s Blood, Sweat & Tears 1969 classic.
Full of breaks and riffs as the upfront keys thud into gear. Classy flute takes the place of the vocals and it’s up and running indie Jazz, that over the years has picked up a cult following.
Flip it over and the Jazz goes deeper and more complicated but loses none of it’s urban charm.
This rare disc is MINT! After decades of a filed-only existence..

Freddie Hughes was the most-impressive export from those soul-fertile streets of Oakland, California, this is his one and only album.
From the very first track side 1. Freddie will have you hooked into his pleading style, rich in expressive emotion “Send My Baby Back” drips with hopefulness, a Soul masterpiece that was to be his biggest hit.
Next cut “Tonight I’m Gonna See My Baby” is totally uplifting LP ONLY Northern Soul that would set any dancefloor alight. Next is more of the same, next track knocked me dead - last track Mr. Hughes flexes his vocal with a male version of Aretha’s “Natural Woman”, confidence indeed.. Side one is as complete a soul experience you could ever wish to hear - with the bonus of non-45 Northern Soul smacking you in the face!
Would producer Lonnie Hewitt allow the flip to fade into insignificance? No way as he kicks off with “Gotta Keep My Bluff in”..next is another LP only cut a mid-tempo “Every Night” what a slick delight. followed by “Where Is My Baby” then a killer take on the Temptations “You’re My Everything” with “What Am I Gonna Do Without Your Loving” another Northern Soul mover ensuring EVERY TRACK is a fabulous Bay Area experience of inspiring Soul!
Condition is fabulous - the music is stand-out - so good we would have liked to sample ALL the tracks. Time allowed for 7 - but those 7 will capture you completely..

This double helping of mid-60s Northern Soul has lived in the shadows of “Dust My Broom” for a little too long.
Maybe the gorgeous clothes it’s wearing today, will entice you to unleash the explosive Sister-snarl of Tina Turner. Tina rides a relentless Ike Turner piano rhythm and the Ikettes decorate the backing with their perpetual yelping of support , the gathering whip up a the perfect-dance-storm.
Flip it over for what was the preferred Northern Soul spin, seeing turntable action at The Wheel etc. as the insistent thumpin’ dancebeat was just what the dancers were looking for at the time and was in fact the selected side above “Dust My Broom” as the more “Instant” dancefloor mover.
The “Dust My Broom” nudges the “overplayed” category, this disc would be a smart replacement. With both sides doing it up right, with “Beauty” a real out-and-out stomper of the lost-powerful kind and “Anything” a little more cultured in its approach.
Looking totally fabulous in its birth-sleeve, adorned with the coveted Big-Red “A” with vinyl in near flawless condition… what’s not to want?

Unshakably written into Northern Soul folklore as Wigan Casino’s most memorable cover/up. The record that for years tantalized the Casino crowd, teasing the collectors into utter frustration, as they dreamed of knowing it’s real identity.
From all the 1,000s of Northern Soul “cover-ups” over the years this is recognized as the most imaginative, even sparking of theories and bar stool tales of how Richard Searling actually arrived at christening this 45 as “The Phantom Janitor”

What about these two 70s Philly dance grooves - previously undocumented 1978 double serving from husband & wife team James Bynum and Dorothy Bynum.
You will of course remember James Bynum’s huge 1975 offering to Blackpool Mecca & Cleethorpes Winter Gardens patrons with his “Time Passes By” monster also put together by this talented couple and currently very sought-after.
This 3 years later creation is dripping in obscurity, begging the question why it’s remained “out-of-sight” for the last 36 years..
So eagerly check out the soundfile for innovative Philadelphia dancefloor lures, they do contrast with each other but both present the listener with fabulous urban D.I.Y. enthusiasm aiming for club impact.
No club impact happened and a real rarity was born.. don’t you just love this record collecting journey?

“Jack Montgomery” aka Marvin Jones provides one of the those velvety vocals that sink deep into your Soul.
A voice that is equally comfortable with a mid-tempo or the upbeat Motor City floorshaker, as this disc is about to prove.
In the mid-70s “Do You Believe It” it was the play side - a relentless Northern Soul juggernaut, an irrepressible runaway stomper that actually came to an emergency stop! when an enterprising DJ decided the truly sumptuous flip side was also worth a spin.
The rest is history, since the later 70s “Dearly Beloved” has been just that…”beloved” by all. It epitomizes the diversity of the Northern Soul scene when “The Salvadors” and this strolling master-class in Soul, can be played in the same DJ set and receive exactly the same adulation from the crowd.
Reading the label credits it showcases what is possible when the very best at their work gather in the same room….Marvin Jones, Don Mancha, Mike Theodore, Dennis Coffey, Johnny Terry and the mercurial intrusion of Andrew “Mike” Terry’s baritone sax at all the right times lift this session into “the greats”
It was not just the monumental vocal in the studio that day, but a gifted team who crafted unsurpassed Northern Soul that led to the loving acceptance of the Northern Soul mid-tempo dance groove!

Records of this classic status require very few words from us.
Only to say this nearly 50 years old and in blinding condition snugly hugging it’s birth-sleeve is still looking totally clean, vinyl only reveals light sleeve contact blemishes in strong light, solid center small hole label is flaw free.
I honestly don’t think I’ll ever see a finer copy this late in the day… A Twisted Wheel anthem that has endured 1/2 a century of Northern Soul attention - and still packs the dancefloor today.
Real Deal Classic for those of you who put condition first as the deciding factor of what discs you add to your collection…

Offers up two sides that have swelled in popularity in recent years, with “You Just Don’t Know” receiving DJ attention after years of uplifting “Sweet And Heavenly” being the choice to spin.
A 1966 New Yorker, pitching up two slick harmony Northern Soul dance grooves, benefiting from the presence of the highly gifted guitarist Trade Martin; who’s studio arrangements feature on so many stand-out Northern Soul classics.
This “two for the price of one” 45 influenced somewhat from the impact the Four Seasons were having on the charts, also provide us with delicious harmony vocals woven into an easy-to-dance to production.
Condition is blinding, and as the demand of disc has rocketed in recent times..we feel there’s a few of you who may not own a copy..yet.

The Girl-Group sound … at it’s most captivating.
Early 60s Motor City Northern Soul, echoing everything the Golden Detroit era was about… as Motown’s girl groups were just starting to receive chart success. Although there are light hints of the “Motown Sound” this 45 is essentially a release saturated in street-level hopefulness.
Beautifully naive, in anticipation of success, as the skills of two Detroit NS notables join forces; Kris Peterson and soon to be Golden World/Ric Tic luminary Bob (Rob Recco) Hamilton write for the sweet vocals of Miss Hardy.
Both sides epitomizing the Motor City sound of this formative period.
But the most exciting aspect of listing is THE CONDITION almost without exception on the few occasions this 45 has passed my way it has been way less than VG. This copy is a clean Mint minus with two flawless label - very elusive in this treasured condition…

You could use every superlative in the Oxford dictionary, then at the front of each, add the likes of “Utterly” “Absolutely” “Totally” “Entirely” “Completely” and I still could not in any way fully describe the sensation that shot though my entire body, when I first witnessed the intro to this Philly Phenomena.
Not just me, but most every teenage Northern Soul disciple of the early 70s was moved to levels of embarrassing excitement, instantly riveting themselves to a life of searching for this record’s equals…
Of which there are very few…
