A new year and a new photo thread to keep us entertained through the months ahead.

My first addition is something suitably seasonal - a wintery scene taken in the Amsterdam woods.

DSC_1212-web.jpg.403007fb2d1c4c9deefe4ade26a6e734.jpg

All contributions very much welcomed, and if the photos we've seen in previous years is anything to go by, we've a lot to look forward to.

Enjoy!

At last I'm able to do a decent walk after my bypass, maybe not great pics but things of interest along the way...First pic is of a set of carry in/carry out steps thought to be one of the few remaining in Lancashire and a throwback to when cotton was spun at home, cannot remember exact details I have the info somewhere but cannot find it, bales of raw cotton would be delivered up the steps and the top floor of the cottage would be where the spinning into cotton thread was done and then carried out down the steps. Second photo is taken from Scout Moor opposite my house and shows Holcolmbe Hill with it's tower and Winter Hill behind to the right. Third and fourth pictures are on the Irwell Sculpture trail, sadly both the Three Kings and the Picture frame are falling into disrepair, the Three Kings is a homage to Lancashire's Industrial heritage I believe ,there was more to the picture frame, some sculptures behind it but they have long gone and rotted away as has the bottom part of the frame.

There's some footage on YouTube of some in Alaska I think, on someone's deck of their home, sharing it with their cat (very brave cat).

I think it might be a bald eagle Steve, but I'm no expert.

Your right Dave thanks.   Don't know why I said it was a sea eagle.  Senior moment.

White headed sea eagles have a white head (the clue is in the name) in your defence, and are a little more common to Europe.

To be honest Baz, there's not a lot there that you could call rockery plants (sedum and maybe gazanias at a push), but it does look good.  The yellow echinacea put on a rather stiff display (what with being metal).  What was at the back? If it's a veratrum, then I'm impressed, if a foxglove or verbascum less so.  On closer inspection I'm certain it's a verbascum (79%)

I like the Alstroemeria, they are at least from Peru, try Eucomis, though put them in a container as they might not be that hardy with you.  Mirabilis jalapa ought to work too, easy enough to grow from seed, and once happy will self seed elsewhere in the garden.  A yucca might give you added structure too.

Tigridia's, from a packet of Lidl's bulbs.  I've grown them before in colder climates and their flowers were much smaller, these were at least 3" across if not more.

Sorry...not sure why this happened..

Anyway. The new observation deck will be the biggest glass bottom type in the world..

New York is a construction site at the moment.

Literally 20 or more massive buildings going up.

A few pictures from my walk today, the Tower on Holcolmbe Hill has been taunting me for over a year every time I've sat in the garden or looked out of the window, finally felt strong enough after bypass to give it a go today, bloody knackered when I got up there, the Urn caused quite a bit of disagreement when it was first installed as part of the Irwell Valley Sculpture trail as many thought it had nothing to do with Ramsbottoms history, the Stag is in some ones garden on the hill, not sure what it's made of but it looked pretty impressive, the roots of the trees on the path have always impressed me, the photo doesn't really do them justice, the view is looking across the valley to my house, it was wonderful to be out walking again and maybe in the near future I won't have to stop quite as much when the fuel runs out...

There is a thing Im always after in Photos, what I call dynamic perspective, I think makes the diference from a nice shot, into a fooking great shot, most times its about shapes, and how elements in your pictures live within the frame, that dog 'Chester' and the lake are doing it!!  cool pic, might loook nice in B&W, and cropped a tad Steve...

Ive been doing lots of canal walks this week and they are covered in a green carpet..
