Ben Pirani - New LP - How Do I Talk To My Brother - Colemine Records
Ben Pirani - How Do I Talk To My Brother LP Colemine Records
CATALOG: CLMN-12021
RELEASE DATE: 9/21/2018

Colemine Records is proud to present the debut LP from Ben Pirani. A record that feels so very easy and familiar, but at the same time fresh and relevant. Like the hype sticker says, “Soul music that’s so positive it might just spark a revolution!”

“It’d be easy to mistake this release for yet another soul revival album made by a dude who wasn’t there the first time around - but it’d be the listener’s mistake to make. What kind of record is a man with a punk past going to make when he’s been a mod, a rocker and a rare soul collector in between? One that draws on a familial history of activism, sacrifice and earnest hustling – the very same things we’re all being called upon to conjure as a society in this present moment. This is a body of work that lets neither performer nor listener off the hook, yet still understands the need for care and cause in the spaces between. Consider it: A band of fighters meant for the clear-eyed lovers of the world. Ben Pirani is not fooling around, and neither are the working musicians who agreed to make this record with him.” -Jocelyn Brown

The Jewels Live at The Cheetah 1967 - New York
Just a highlight word about a recently stumbled upon youtube 1967 video that may be of interest.

The video is simply titled 'The Cheetah', which doesn't really give a lot away but as the clip plays it turns out to be a 24 min documentary type programme from 1967 concerning itself with a 1960s/70s New York club... The Cheetah featuring The Jewels

Our Stoke Northern Soul Charity All Dayer Event and the BBC One Show
We had the pleasure of Matt Allwright and his crew from the BBC The One Show at our Northern Soul Charity Event last night at the Gardeners Retreat in Stoke. We had a great night with the crew filming our event and interviewing for the programme.

I don't know if many of you know that Matt is passionate with the Soul Scene and televised one 6 years ago which I still actually have on record. They had so much fun they stayed till the end.

We will be televised in 6 to 8 weeks on BBC1 and will post the actual date when he sends it to me....

Thanks for everyone's support and a cracking night....

Dean Johnson R.I.P.
Dean Johnson (Deanjj @dean jj on here) lost his long and painful battle with cancer of the jaw on Tuesday 14th August. His wife Sue and his brother Lee have asked me to inform those members of soul source who are not already aware of the news and to confirm that a celebration of his life will take place on Wednesday 29th August at the Royal Hotel, Market Street, Hayfield SK22 2EP from 1pm.

More details will follow shortly

I was able to spend some time with Dean a couple of Saturdays ago and typical of the man, who in spite of being in great pain, greeted me with the instruction "no tears Chaz,I am not afraid to die and I do not wish my passing to be a sad event. I have plans in place to be burned and expect you and anyone else who wants to join in to help celebrate my life in The Royal when I finally depart"

We have been friends for 40 years, never a cross word although we did argue about some of his prices and I only have happy memories of being in is company.

R.I.P. Dean Johnson.

Tracy Hamlin pays tribute to Renee Diggs
Tracy Hamlin Pays Homage to Late Starpoint Singer Renee Diggs with Her Cover of “You’re My Sunny Day”

Ever-versatile vocal sensation Tracy Hamlin is adding her love light to the rays of summer with a very special early August EP release on her own DMH Records label:  a cover of “You’re My Sunny Day” that was a Quiet Storm turntable hit in the summer of 1980 for the R&B-Pop band Starpoint. The feel-good love song is a perfect fit for 2018 remixes by Hamlin who has recorded three versions to cover a plethora of romantic scenarios: a slow version on side A and a mid-tempo version on side B of a limited-edition vinyl 7” 45 single, plus a remix coming a month after on Quantize Recordings with Earl Tutu, John Khan and Hamlin’s longtime club music collaborator DJ Spen.

Botanica Rare Soul at The New York Times
Interesting article on The New York Times concerning Botanica Rare Soul and  longtime internet types such as Mr Fine wine, titled 'Where Fans of Rare Retro Soul Get Their Groove on' it s worth the walkover...

Matt Weingarden was running late. Clutching a box of records, he asked the couple in the window seat at the candlelit bar to relocate. He bussed a pint glass from their table, set up two turntables and a mixer, and set his records up on the windowsill. Switches were flipped. Knobs were turned. A green light blinked on. Finally, he put the needle down.

Northern Soul Connections #16 Benjamin and the...
Northern Connections #16 Benjamin and the...

There’s been many a thread about the ‘survival’ of the NS scene on SS. 'A youth culture left in the hands of old men' to name just one. Well... if these guys have anything to do with it, it will flourish. (This sentiment also extends to the likes of Secret Stash, Hayley Records, Diggin’ Deep, Timmion, and others who are making ‘new’ N.S. music ).

New Soul Junction 45 - Robert Montgomery - A Love Song About You
Press Release:   Robert Montgomery   “Love Song About You/I Love You So   SJ540

Release Date:   Monday 30th July 2018

Robert Montgomery is a Singer, Songwriter, Performer, Producer, Keyboard and Organ Instrumentalist, who began his music career in his early teens jamming with local bands in his small hometown of Rome, Georgia. The most notable being “The Sons of Aries”.  Performing their own blend of rock, soul, and jazz, kept them very busy throughout the southeastern states. However, they never gravitated to recording any original material and eventually disbanding.

It was then that Robert began to write his own songs. One such tune was the soulful “I Need You Girl,” a song based on personal experience with his future wife, Emma. By now in his early 20’s Robert was an aspiring solo artist. Hooking up with a crafty local businessman named Jeffrey Jackson Jr, He entered the studio and recorded “I Need You Girl,” using guys from his former group who were by then called ‘Chain Reaction’. So the song was released on Jackson’s label, Crescent Records, but due to a shoestring budget the 1000 copies pressed were poorly distributed and the song never really achieved any great level of success.

Following 12 months on the road with a group called Villaruz, in 1978 Robert moved to Atlanta. Following an invitation to join a band he’d heard rehearsing as their keyboard and organ player, Robert began a short tenure with the Michigan funk group “Ripple” who themselves had moved to Atlanta upon signing with GRC Records. Ripple recorded several hit singles for GRC including “I Don’t Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky”. Followed by the seminal album “Sons Of The Gods” for Salsoul Records in 1977, which featured their perennial disco/hustle classic “The Beat Goes On And On”.

During a later period of reconstruction by Ripple’s band leader percussionist Brian Sherrer.  Robert used musicians from Ripple to record four self-penned songs as a vanity project which remained unissued, two of which have since been released as a Soul Junction 45 the modern soul dancers ‘Time Of The Day/Take Me High’ (SJ537). While a third track, the excellent ballad ‘Love Song About You’ made it’s initial debut as part of the popular ”We Got A Sweet Thing Going On “ (Volume 3) cd compilation series to great acclaim, following requests for it to put on a 45 we have duly obliged placing it back to back with Robert’s remaining previously unissued track the more dance orientated “I Love You So” complete with girl backing singers. Thus in doing so, we have now completed the trilogy of Robert Montgomery’s recording output.

New Release - Broken Hearts Inc - Kimberlite Records
Hey everyone,

We thought we'd pop in and let you know about our second release due out in a couple of weeks.

The group is called Broken Hearts Inc. and features members from the cities Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta Canada.  The A side Please Don't Walk Away is atmospheric sweet soul with plaintive lyrics dripping with regret and pain while the flip Heartache (Is All You Get) contrasts the other with a bright uptempo arrangement that belies themes of hurt and cold detachment.

Pre-sales go live in about 1.5 hours on www.kimberliterecords.com and orders will ship out on or before August first.

We hope you like it!
