  1. Without sounding like a complete anorak I take sound quite seriously, believing old disks should have the best gear (hifi) to play 'em thats affordable. my set-up is1210 with ortofon concord nite club needle, Grundig round ball speakers, Marantz 2225 receiver amp. I think the amp's late 1970's thus solid state, ball speakers (original 1975) still holding up. System was fairly cheap, for mid-to-late 70's original hardware, roughly my first ever time of 'Northern' exposure. In reality, the amp needs an overhaul, and the speakers are always gonna look better than they sound. Improvement needed in stylus and the speaker setup. fine for now.
  2. Can relate to this 100%. saw something quite similar. Was gobsmacked and disapointed I'll never go to that venue again!
  3. well, violence shoudn't be the answer! risks losing a good venue permanently. Not to mention dentist bills... Membership? Yeah. why not. helps erradicate opportunist p*ss heads/ non-soulies (if no door staff). I realise this takes a dedicated 'promoter admin' to sort, and I'd expect members to get a few quid off, say £10 - £12 standard nite entrance, else whats the point for members? Any member nonsense inside, its down to the promoter to ban/ deal with as appropriate. As for spillage and idiots on / near the floor, there's always a level of 'social interaction' in this area. But you can't seperate the two most enjoyable apects of our scene: dancing, and a few bevvies. Some venues, you gotta cross the dancefloor to get to the bar. It's just very frustrating dancing with some p*ssed up spacker getting in the way of natural soulful enjoyment... but it's a factor of any niter. you have my sympathy if your night was completely ruined by such. So what to do? For me, this defines the difference between good & poor promoters. Good ones's do stay to the end of the night and beyond, constantly keep an eye on things, listen to punters feedback, and sort things out as and when stuff happens. It's from the promotors that improvements are driven. Promotors can't be 'everywhere' all night though... Punters shouldn't feel intimidated about approaching drink spillers either - for a friendly word or two - depending on levels of noise /drunkeness. We shouldn't feel at risk of confrontation over a few words about keeping the liquid off the dancefloor. The 'scene' is surely a 'universally friendly' one, isn't it? Great idea to police the floor. (seen talc police! why not drinks police) seen it work. Not 100% guaranteed but ensures floor remains a decent state. Well done to all promoters that will / and already enforce it. So yeah Anton, membership would defo improve things IMO.
  4. Little Tommy - Baby Can't You See Montclairs - Hey You! Don't Fight It Mighty Marvelows - Talkin' Bout Ya Baby played back to back, I'd cope no problem - albeit minor drooling, which would be a problem
  5. "I'm a carpenter of love.. and I'll fix you!" (The Bandwagon - Breakin' Down The Walls Of Heartache - Epic). Not the usual heart wrenching, soul stirring, harmony induced masterpiece, oh no. It's a fast dancer. Just a simple (cheesy) line in the chorus. The lead vocalist literally belts it out! from start to finish.
  6. I can imagine! Picture the scene... '73. The pumping sound system (all analogue) the dance floor, flares (lights & trousers). A young Mr Hampsey takes the last swigs of his Ansells (bitter) and confidently heads for the floor... eye-ing the laydeez.... (Cue electric strings of ELO's 'Showdown'... )
  7. Yeah, good points. Depends on personal taste as to saturation of a song until it becomes stale as not like-able anymore. (I must have liked Al Wilson's The Snake at one point!) Personally, there are songs that are hammered but I still enjoy them and I can't explain why! Without doubt, the 'more astute' DJ will continously work hard to replenish their gems, and this positively adds to their reputation. A combination of DJ box purge to add fresh stuff (re-activation / new discovery), and the reliance that classic faves can always be pulled from the box anytime, is how I perceive a Northern Soul DJ to be. I think the pressure is still on a DJ regardless of who you are (reputation), even if no payment is involved. The room could be full of friends /peers / rivals even! Any dancefloor can be demanding. You'd probably feel more relaxed though, thus will enjoy it more, thus more likely to create a better mix without worrying about the usual spoils.
  8. Yes!! That's the power of Soul! Whack on some 'sweet'...! Everyone instantly thinks about going home together to create the next beautiful generation of Soul youth! (They grow up to become the next generation of soul DJ's/ dancers / punters / collectors/ promoters. Possible future thread here:- Favourite Sweet Soul tracks... and Conception! er....... hope I haven't offended anybody...! ) Seriously though, I enjoy sweet soul, but emphasis in the UK being Northern Soul dancing with evenings/ Allnighters usually ending the last few records that feel - in my opinion - as "a finale" - generally popular, great dancing mid-tempo Northern tracks (rather than sweet soul possibly not widely known/ slow. We leave generally satisfied with the memory that last 2 or 3 records played 'were special' because they rounded off the night /event quite nicely! - and the majority in the room enjoyed the opportunity to 'last dance' to 'em. Sweet soul though, love it. Do people say that a 'good dancer' is one that can perform at any tempo/ speed? (Don't answer that!)
  9. Nah, it's not dumb. Just different knowledge that's all. (i.e. I've never heard the 'cookie crumbles' track from Odia. Would you describe it as an up-tempo fast track? (i.e. danced to at a fast pace? ) or is it a slow moving ballad? As Ian stated, she wasn't well known over here.) Whispers are also there on the shelf. Wonder if anyone has other 'tape archive' photographs to share for interest and perusal!!
  10. Not too bad! This is a cover of an early 70's pop song by a UK band called ELO (The Electric Light Orchestra) headed by Geoff Lynn (great musician) from Brum! (Birmingham, UK).
  11. So thats what a Philly anologue archive library looks like. Can just imagine Nile boogie-ing amongst the archives to Bowies's young americans, and RR's car wash/ wishing on a star.../ i wanna get next to you... Paul Anka & Odia's 'Your'e having my baby' sold well in the UK (top 10, 1974). Odia's disco fused "Make it up to me in Love" (also duet with Paul Anka, 1977) may have got UK spins! (track is listed in the Tim Brown /Martin Koppel Northern Soul guide ed.2) Def. funky/modern. Soulful vocals.
  12. A milestone achievement in our scene Dave, and without such references on-line (in this 'high tech' world of ours!) - we'd all be less knowledgable when we feel 'the need to know!' and likewise, share with all. May your dedicated passion - and those who contribute at all levels (esp. Bosco) - forever remain, and never wane!
  13. ...If only Carlsberg did 'International Rescue' soul weekenders on Tracey Island....
  14. That is really excellent. I imagine you have to be quite fit to keep this footwork going...
  15. Yep good call. Got this for the hi-octane, fast stepper 'I'm Not Satisfied' And regularly play the gorgeous ballad, gem of a flip 'There He Is' Also the Deon Jackson ballad 'I Need A Love Like Yours' (flip of the faster 'I Can't Go On' (Carla) ). (Recently danced to 'I Can't Go On' @Banbury last week. Well played that DJ, and the bod who requested it! )
  16. Yeah. She even evades the talc police (her dad?!!) @ 2:06! Geezer dancing has very good footwork IMO. Takes balls to get up & dive straight onto a virtually empty dance floor, daylight, and most of the punters watching too.
  17. The little girl pouring talc on the floor.... bless! Teach 'em young! She'll grow up to be a great dancer...! (running for cover now)
  18. You are right, the title is in there! And thanks for the welcome to soul source forum Steve. Cheers.
  19. ter After a few pints of Dogbolter... could be a fair shuffler...
  20. Heard the clip. Sounds like an 80's Pat Benatar, pop-esque, disco floor-filler. Maybe the seller is using the wrong soundclip? You are therefore at liberty, IMO, to contact the seller with any specific comment/ query! This is my first ever reply to a Soul Source post by the way....
