About The Event

The return of the Ashton Ukrainian continues after a few fabulous nights in 2021 and we're hoping for another great installment.

If you haven't been before here's a potted history from our very own Chris Churm:

The club was originally based at the  Dukinfield Masonic hall, starting well in January 2017  attended by around 100 guests. Resident DJs were Brian Lester, Chris Churm and Chris Penn.

The venue was great with a large dance floor  and ran until May 2017 when it moved to the Ukrainian Club, a slightly smaller venue (capacity 130) perfect the type of night we were trying to run delivering a mix of lesser known, rare and under played soul; a bit of everything.

The  first date  was June 2017 and was a  great night musically. January 2020 was the 3rd anniversary with guests Phil wainwright and Alex Jones,  respected collector/ DJs to entertain us with their fantastic collections and they were superb, and it was one of our best nights.

Following that in Feb 2020  Les Harrison (one of our regular DJs) and Geoff Stubbs of Stockport were our guests and were excellent as usual .

I must  thank Les Harrison and sue  who were at our first night in 2017 and have only missed the odd one when he has been booked to DJ at Culcheth and our dates unfortunately clashed . He has also helped us to sort the gremlins in the sound system on a few occasions.

Sadly  Brian Lester  who used to play some great tracks decided to bow out from the scene  and our other original DJ maestro Chris Penn moved to the  north east, he  will be missed ,but he has assured us he will be back to annoy us from time to time to DJ for us. .

Here is a list of some of the guys and girls that have played for us and have all taken part in the spirit of our humble Ukrainian club soul evening.

Carl and Maria Willingham, John Hillel, Dave Hall, Chris Penn, Brian Lester, Les Harrison, Derek Watmough, Ian Cunliffe,  Dave Beech, Carol Burgess, Simon Ingham, Mick Howard, Carol-Ann McCarthy, Geoff Stubbs, Geoff Buckley, Tom Dacey, John Baggaley, Dave Flynn, Les Hare, Mark Tobin, Ged Gibbons and Phil Etchells  (sorry if I missed anyone).

As we all know  in March  2020 (just as our guests  Simon Ingham and Mick Howard  were ready to  DJ for us) the pandemic struck and everything stopped but the restart will pick up where we left off and  Simon alongside Mick will be our first guests, hopefully we can bounce back .

Post pandemic the club have informed us that for the night to continue it will have to be a Saturday night event, ironically that is what we first wanted and we think could be better for everyone so keep an eye on the soul source calendar for future instalments.

We hope everyone is well and can’t wait to see you all again.

 Top night again.

So lucky to have given the Ukrainian club a whirl all those years ago as Joyann mentioned in her review.Top sets every month and last night was exceptional regarding music and attendees. Lots of familiar faces and new too.

Let's not forget to give a big thanks to the lovely bar staff, who worked their socks off. Hopefully next month  folk might help them out a bit by taking their empties back on their return to the bar. 😊

See you in February

Another banging night at the Ukrainian - word seems to be spreading!

There wasn't a spare table in the main room by the time we arrived at 20:00 and the bar area was already starting to fill up too. I have to say it was great to see so many familiar faces and some of those first timers at the event, everyone I spoke too without exception had nothing but good things to say about the quality of music and that's the point isn't it?

It's one of those functions where if I'm not absorbed in the music in the main room then I'm deep in conversation in the bar or corridor (trying to pick brains with greater knowledge than me of course 😎)

Applause to all the DJs - they did exactly what it says on the tin and the dance floor never stopped throbbing all night - and would have continued beyond the finish if at all possible.

I'm now looking forwards to see what the February event holds in store for us - bring it on Chris

WOW!!! WHAT a night, people were queuing to get in at 7.15pm the place was bouncing by 8pm. We had people in from North Wales South Yorkshire and all over the North West!! The Ukrainian Club has rocketed in popularity, the word is definitely out. Me and Simon are so pleased to be a small part in helping one of the scene's  good guys Chris Churm promote this club to the stature it deserves.

Maybe an overused phrase but the music was totally off the scale, all bases covered Phil our resident doorperson also has a great collection another incredible first hour and Steve Skokep was also on fine form,as we've come to expect. Sir Bob Hinsley smashed it out of the park, too many class tunes to mention and the dancefloor lapped it up, not a spare place to be had. Next up top man Stu Cheetham and a long awaited return to the decks added a good few funky edged dancers to the mix, pure energy  take a bow mate!!

Chris Churm the driving force behind this great event, took it on to another level, some cool crossover winners towards the end of the night was just what was needed and we even managed to sneak another tune at the end!!

We're back to the normal third saturday in February ,so keep checking back on the event page for details of that!!

Top Night, tinged with sadness.

I only knew him as Kevin. For the last five years (pandameic allowing) he'd sit next to me at Ukranian Soul Club nights. Early doors we'd spend about 20 mins talking about the music. That's all.

Many more at the club and beyond, knew him much better than me. He passed away in early Jan.

What can i say. He was very likable. I liked him. I'll miss him. He'd have loved the 5th Annversary at Ukranian last night.

Kevin Cannon R.I.P.
