What - Judy Street is probably up there. I think it was voted top ever northern tune in Black Echoes at one point.

It depends on when you went.

From early 74 to 76 you always heard the Salvadors, Rita DaCosta, Little Anthony, Panic, Adam Apples etc, etc.

The dance floor was just always full.

Was there a record that stopped your conversation and you nearly fell down the stairs

to dance to!?? :D

Yep - Afternoon on the rhino

what about the construction hey little way out girl, that was massive

Judy Street was voted the number one northern soul record EVERYWHERE! I don't know this, but i would stick my money on judy street to be the most danced to track at wigan, and the most loved track of them all. I have 2 copies of the record, bought in the 70's, and both have "wigan no.1" written on the white covers ( with that carefree childhood enthusiasm, now sadly gone)

Cecil Washington

GOOD CALL! WAS FLOORFILLER FOR AT LEAST 2 YRS SOLID BEFORE MR DRAPER GOT ONE!

SAME CAN BE SAID FOR VICKI BAINES TOO.

74 to 76 the biggest floor filler must have been the Casualeers

except one I usually left the dance floor

Quite probably the biggest floorfiller. Even after all these years, that tinkling intro and the bass strings break gives you tingles!

Think l danced to that on more than one occasion

l blame the back streets

laugh.gif a case of "getting used to the blues"!!

Dont know if its been mentioned but...

Williams & Watson - Too Late

Has anyone mentioned this one, was a massive tune at one time

That Construction tune is pure sunshine pop/soft rock. Sounds like it could've been the follow-up to The Sundowners "Always You" or something with heavy Curt Boettcher/Roger Nichols/Paul Williams involvement. Great tune!

in agreement fully sebastian, it went down a storm at the time, remember a lad offering searling £400 at the height of its popularity, when it was still covered as well :shades:

SANDI SHELDON

Went to Wigan from March 1978 until it closed.

Without doubt the three biggest tunes in this time were "Hey Liitle Way Out Girl", which was followed by "Country Girl" and then "I don't like to lose" in that chronological order. They weren't the most danced to, however, as Searling had the only copies and you only got to hear them once a night.

I would say that the most danced to tune during this period, apart from the three before eight, was Bobby Paris "I walked away". I've got a tape of the last 90 mins of the fifth anniversary (Sept. 1978) and it gets played twice, once by Alan Rhodes and then again by Winstanley at about 7.30 a.m. Judging by the sound of the clapping, this had the most people on the dance floor.

I definitely never heard Wigan's Chosen Few, but the original Simon Soussan acetate of the "Sounds of Soul" was an absolute monster! I definitely saw people running pell mell downstairs to dance to it.

And if anyones got an MP3 of it I would be very appreciative!

Tainted love/Night owl/Cochise/Afternoon of the rhino/Condition red/Too late all have to be up there don't they?

Best,

RB

Another one up ther has to be "The Night"

Brav

the most popular dance must have been the mens bogs 2 step

Trying to keep your feet dry whilst relieving yourself

This can be done to any tune tho

Ian.

I've just dug the tape out:

Track listing

Alan Rhodes:

I walked away - Boobby Paris

How Can I ever find a way-Carol and Geri

The Closer She gets - John Drevar

New York in the dark - Ad Libs

She me how to love - Jacky de Forest

I can't let him - Cheryl Lynn

I you loved me - Peggy March

Dave Evison:

Our love is getting stronger-Jason Knight

This old heart of mine - Isley Bros.

Gotta Have your love - The Sapphires

Move on Up - Curtis Mayfield

A little togtherness - The Younghearts

Breakaway - The Valentines

I still love you - The Superlatives

Russ Winstanley:

Music with Soul - The Pallbearers

Ten to one - Lou Roberts

I walked away - Bobby Paris

Love Music - Sergio Mendez

Love's a Magic word - Dawn

Panic - Reperata and the Delrons

I go to Pieces - Gerri Grainger

Followed by the three before eight.

Sound quality ain't to good for the first three tracks as I was sitting close to the stage by the gents toilets. I then moved up onto the balcony by the tea bar and it's a lot clearer.

Panic / I go to pieces was released on Casino Classics and that night hence Winstanley pugging in at the end.
