stumbled across this on youtube

geezer who first filmed it seems to be restoring it and releasing as a short dvd

WIGAN CASINO --

Some months ago I had an irate e-mail from a Northern Soul fan complaining that my short 1977 film had now appeared, complete, on YouTube and that the quality was TERRIBLE. Was I responsible for this abomination? I must say I was shocked when I checked myself and complained furiously to Granada Television about why they had allowed this to happen.

Needless to say I had no reply, and when I discovered that a feature film called (probably) Soul Boy, based on Wigan Casino and actually using clips from my film, was being finished off for release next spring, I decided that something must be done about rescuing my old documentary.

I had always kept a copy of the original broadcast, so I set about attempting to restore it to its former glory as best I could. The pictures were not too much of a problem, despite having been filmed on 16mm celluloid which had none of the advantages of modern-day digital technology. But the music, especially the Northern Soul tracks, needed completely re-mixing. So that is what weve done.

Looking at the film again, Im struck not only by the extraordinary dancing (later to become world famous as breakdancing), not only by the brilliant Northern Soul tracks, but by the social observations the film makes ever so gently, but incredibly relevant today just as they were then. Listening to an old miner remembering when his best friend had been killed down the mine, you might not immediately think this is relevant to Wigan Casino. But all the old mines have gone; the old miner himself is now dead; the world he inhabited changed beyond all recognition. Just like the Wigan Casino itself, and what it represented.

Gone, but like the miner, definitely not forgotten. I hope the film will bring back those memories and ensure they are never forgotten.

If you bring your mate along to the 100 Club and we get Billy Whizz down there as well we can recreate it like Frank Skinner used to do famous footy incidents.
