Doing the next Cheap as Chips night on Friday 25th June and if the last one was anything to go by it'll be a stormer.

Anyway, I've got my Cheap as Chips playbox but I've just added two more delicious tunes to it today and would love to hear your favourite Cheapies. Any with soundclips would be greatly appreciated.

My top three at the moment are:

Alfreda Brockington - Your love has got me chained and bound - Phil-La (been around for ever and just got itself back in my playbox)

Afro Blues Quintet Plus one - La la la la la - Mira (my tip for the next year if you like your latin - got the makings of a monster)

Jeanette Williams - Stuff - Backbeat (every home should have this - would punch a hole through concrete)

Cheers and enjoy.

3 Jimmy Hughes - Neighbour Neighbour - excellent dancer and the other sides good too!

Yes the other side "Its A Good Thing To Know" is an excellent record!

Just three of many. I prefer the term inexpensive to cheap; there's nothing cheap about quality soul, regardless of the price tag.

Having said that "As inexpensive as chips" sounds bollocks when you say it.

You don't need to look too hard to find these at less than a tenner each.

Jimmy Delphs Go for the Carla copy(Of Almost) and you have the brilliant flip side "Ive been fooled before"

Totally agree Pete - There are so many good tunes out there that you can use in a set -But some people as ive said before jsut want 15 mins of fame rather than learning a craft and including lesser priced records in a set takes a good ear and crafting the tunes together.

What a brilliant box all these quoted here on this thread would make.

Pitch it up to +8 or 10 and it's a stormer! Played it covered up and people always ask what it is! :shhh:

The flip of Syl Johnson is pretty good as well.

yes indeed matt.. Thousands of cheap tunes and many with great flipsides too,ha ha, just the way i like it.. Not so good for record dealers i guess but good for the collecting of quality soul on a budget, the way many of us like or have to do it..

Thousands cheap and wonderful tunes that would stand up against any records...

Pete said JJ Barnes " Please let me in " then flip it over, oooooh, a soul tune indeed hiding there, if you aint heard it and have the record then see what you think?? " i think i found a love "

Just a point though, one persons cheap as chips means £15 or under, just a thought as some will list what they call a cheapie and to others thats quite a lot to pay... or more than they are used to paying.. We all have different levels i guess, depends on finances..

Many tunes listed here are stocking fillers, fill yer boots....

I will get a few titles up later...

" I Ain't Gonna Stop" The Masqueraders

" Pretty Baby" The COD's

" Boys and Girls Together" Johnny and The Expressions

:)

Same Kinda Thing on Twinight by Syl is very good too.

I'd actually go as far to say that from the first Federal through to the last Hi 45 you can't actually go too far wrong with Syl, something for everyone, R&B, Soul, Funk, Crossover, Ballads. It's all there & done pretty damn well for the most part.

I am glad to see that the following records already received a mention:

The Decisions "I Can't Forget About You"

The Ethics "Look At Me Now"

Betty Everett "Unlucky Girl"

Juanita Williams "Baby Boy"

Joe Tex "You Better Believe it Baby" (great intro: highly effective floor filler)

I'd like to nominate three more:

Dee Dee Warwick "Don't You Ever Give Up On Me" Mercury

The Intruders "(You'd Better) Check Yourself" Gamble

The Radiants "Ain't No Big Thing" Chess

Hows about Guys & Gals

Tommy Hunt - Loving On The Losing Side -Just played this and it sounds great!

Betty Harris -12 Red Roses

Spinners - With My Eyes

Willey Wiley - Just Be Glad - King

hugely under rated record, play it all the time at home

Off the top of my head:

Herman Griffin - Are You For Me Or Against Me - MAGIC TOUCH

Dennis Landry - Sing My Song - SOUL UNLIMITED

Just 3, not easy at all, so many quality soul tracks that don't bust the bank... 3 spins of mine at Soul Or Nothing events in the past... All mid tempo and oozing soul in my book..

Maybe not tips for the top but quality soul indeed..

Take away.. The Tams... Still all these years later many folk aint looked on the flipside "Hey Girl Don't bother me" and found thIs wonderful gem..

We all have them b-sides still not flipped in our collections, who aint played this??

Lou Ragland... I can't take it ... Co- Co Cleveland records.... A record that ticks the boxes for me, play it loud...

Darrow Fletcher.. " I think i'm gonna write a song ".. Congress records.... A tune of such beauty from the man that can do no wrong..

this is from beaumont, texas. It is carl stewart with the sonics, right? Manship auctioned one of the sonics on copyright maybe a year ago but I don't remember if it's this one or not. Carl Stewart also has a record on mercury if I'm remembering correctly.

There is a nice barbara lynn record on this label.
