Playing through some old tapes yesterday and "Shadows and Reflections" by The Lonely Crowde on MGM came on, what a bag of shi*e! How did such a crap record ever get played especially during a time when so many classics were around. Apart from sounds made for the scene is this the worst ever?

Big, pompous, camp, ballady crap for gay soulies. I reckon Winstanley did a deal with the casino owners - play these three and we'll clear them all out sharpish at close of play. Only it backfired on them as the thousands of Wigan freaks, nutted up to the eyeballs on so much gear they'd lost all sense of quality, lapped it all up like devil dogs. Not in my day, Russ.

I have an antidote though - I just think about all the good stuff & then I don't feel so bad - beginning to sound like Julie Andrews now.

i remember djing for neil rushton aged 18 (me not neil) at (i think) morecambe in 1985/6 tripping my head off on some blotting paper acid i'd been given

i was playing boogaloo investigator and all the skins and rockabilly twats were wrecking to it

there was a little window behind the decks and me and my mate mark mortimer were standing on a chair looking out at the illuminations (must have been a late summer run) , going 'wow! unbelievable!' and someone came up and politely pointed out that the record had finished about a minute ago.

had some great times on the rallies.

but those days have gone.

I don't know that many people that have heard this. But I did see it in a list once and that idea that it should be considered as a collectable/desirable soul record, or possibly played out is ridiculous.

I have heard plenty of Northern Soul records. I have also heard plenty of uptempo pop records. The knack is to distinguish one from the other.

My Life With You is another pop record that I quite like wouldn't dream of playing it out though - If your taking requests how about a rendition of 'the hills are alive'

Do you mean 'True Lovers' ? I love that maybe this thread demonstrates why the scene is like it is. Too many tastes too broad a spectrum of sounds people think of a 'northern' I don't think of TL as northern rather as rare soul even though it isnt rare

I remember that track from Wigan with a degree of affection. Quite a lot of the poppy seventies tunes had a sense of drama to them. Another example of a good poppy tune which had nothing to do with soul would be Lost Summer Love. It was however an important tune in it's day along with a hundred more I could list - Touch of Velvet anyone ?

And what about all those crappy 100mph stomper instrumentals that the Casino dancers loved ?

I always enjoyed Morecambe because they had that Beer Keller place where pissed-up scooter types would be serenaded by an accordion player doing his versions of various soul and reggae favourites. At least when he wasn't being interrupted every 5 mins by drunken idiots making 'announcements' like: "Ah, feggit. Feggin' scoo'er boyz, ya fugger. Fug-it!" Etc...

Not heard the exact re-mix, but yes the 'proper' unissued take on the Japanese LP is good.

Makes you wonder how many tailor mades are waiting to be spun - 'one-offs' are now simple with the advent of home PC re-mixing/editing software.
