I can't comment on anything related to northern history, but I can say that group soul collectors knew about this record back in the day and it apparently some copies at least were available... I wasn't there, this is just what I know from talking to people. It's not like an unknown record that was recently discovered (or at least it was known outside the northern scene).

He definitely played an uptempo 45 by the "something" Brothers once or twice I'd guess around 77/78. I thought it was called "Baby doll".

Never been able to find out anything about it. Never heard Hopkins Brothers,. Is there a similarity.

Its had spins now for good two or three years and that is first mention of it being a Wigan spin. Don't doubt collectors known about it, Andy and Ady had a copy years. I too find it hard to believe it being played at Wigan or anywhere else till being played in recent years.

You don't need an ipod - just click on the link in Chalky's post underneath his name ie My Website Lifeline & Podcasts (or here https://www.soulunderground.co.uk/ ) click on Podcasts at the top of the screen and then scroll down to the relevant podcast. Having just listened to it, it's not the tune you are thinking of as it's funky with the Tighten Up sounding rythmn guitar riff which seems to be popular at the moment - definately not a Trad 6t's NS stomper and I would have thought unlikely to have been played at Wigan.

Certainly not a record that would have been played at Wigan; it doesn't contain the elements of an archetypal Northern record of the 7ts, whereas it does sound right for todays play list.

Why if these collectors had it for years didn't they play it in their sets before a certain dj un-leashed it on the Northern scene about 18 months ago?

hi fellas, it was reliable soul source-r who usually knows his stuff who posted said statement on facebook...I wont name him as he will put himself in the spotlight if he feels the need to do so.

As I said on the LIfeline Look Back thread...I was surprised myself to hear it had been played at Wigan. But then, why not ? Surely isnt doing the track/record any harm. A great and rare record stays a great and rare record...More so, the fact that in case it really had been played at WIgan and still stayed under the radar for 30 more years only adds kudos to the myth of said 45 IMO.

Personally I first heard said tune at the Soul Shakers Bamberg Weekender in 2008/9 via butch.

Beside that..I think its a bit greedy of them Lifeliners to now have all three copies up there in Wolverhampton. Over here in Berlin we could do with at least one of them.

Going back to Sosenuto's post,i agree up to a point with the "archetypal" sound comment - but many tunes were tried out,some off the wall stuff,that grew on the NS scene.So,possibly RS tried this out,cleared the floor,put it away.?

It was related recently that another A Dyson spin of the moment (Eddie Daniels) was played in the mid 70s, could there have been confusion between this and the Hopkins Bros?

Wouldnt be surprised either way, the amount of records that I thought were latter day plays when in fact they go way back never fails to amaze me

i think eddie daniels was played back then..maybe wigan or stafford. was it not booted. the turnover of records played was far greater than today..you cant remember everything

There's a Soussan list on here, posted recently, from mid 70's with Eddie Daniels on it. Soussan also booted it.

I'd still be very surprised if HB played at Wigan.

Asked Richard and he said he never had it.

Dave Raistrick i believe played Eddie Daniels bitd (Clee?).Quite feasible that wires have been crossed on this one.

Robb, I'm pretty sure there were no other Hopkins 45s. Maybe you are thinking of the Harrison Brothers.

The Hopkins Brothers on Magnetic are from New Haven, CT and are exactly the same group as the doowop group the Chestnuts on Davis ... it also happens to include Sylvester Hopkins of the Five Satins. The record is from 1971. The group members don't have any copies and aren't even interested in licensing. Some of the members also sang in later versions of the Five Satins.

as it uses the "tighten up" riff I myself wouldnt have thought the reocrd being from the seventies...late sixties, around 67/68 would have been my guess.

Eddie Daniels was on a list from Soussan from 1975 or '76, the list was posted on Soul Source other week. Soussan also booted it, excellent boot, hard to tell the difference when first looking. It had brief plays at the Casino, dunno by who for sure.

Hopkins Brothers, Richard has already confirmed he didn't have it and if it had been played at Casino I reckon it would have been said so by now. Ady Croasdell had a copy years and filed which he's just sold Mick H, so has Andy Dyson. Ian Wright got a copy couple of years ago and within weeks so did Butch. I guess it didn't get spins some years ago was because it didn't feel right for the scene at the time which was more retro with all the returnees wanting what they had when they left the seen when Wigan closed and loads of R&B being spun, Andy Dyson said as much himself that it was't right for the scene at the time.
