Hi All,

A friend of mine does a local radio show (plays lots of soul/reggae stuff)

and he's doing a 1977 themed show. He's asked me to find out any sounds that were relative to this year...e.g....top sounds played at niters ,or were recorded that year..or even if any soul artists died that year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Ed

If you want more mainstream stuff hard to ignore Stevie Wonder's impact on 1977 both in U.K. & U.S.

In the U.K. 5th most succesful chart artist (solo male) - singles AND albums.

Mainly due to "Songs in the Key of Life" - released late '76 but big impact on charts through 77.

Inspirations was a Mecca/Ritz biggie from 76.

Plus the soul police would have had a field day back than, cause Richard did not get a real one untill 79 off Barry Wadd,

Never heard of it.

Big tune for Colin Curtis at Blackpool Mecca in his "last hour" sets.

Andy all of those were from 1976 not 1977 (Dooley Silverspoon 75 I think) and I don't think any bar Del Larks were played in 1997, not in the big room anyway. Obviously that doesn't stop you from hearing them for the first time in 77, I realise that

I was there from 75 Pete , some of them were a bit naff and contributed to me not being there after 77

Cheers for the info all

Don't remember that ! New to me .

Obviously only joining the nighters scene from Cleethorpes Winter Gardens meant I probably missed 85% or more of being there when the big sounds were first played.

Nevertheless....Black Soul crammed the floor to a frenzy....for a few weeks.

Only other track I saw that really impacted the floor was James Coits Black Power a year or so later.

Both are probably dismissed today as youthful exuberance!

I'm sorry, but I did not like that Black Soul record back in the day. That was the couple of times I heard it in Wigan, and I still don't care for it now! But each to his own, everyone has a different taste!

It’s all a blurr looking back 44 years, but the sounds were pretty good with 60’s newies and 70’s crossover popping up all over the place. Has anyone got scans of Blues and Soul adverts to remind us?

Absolutely...

The frenzy to dance to this at CWG made it special for a few weeks, and then it over.

The reality is, that if it was a genuine top sound it would have been revived many times over.

It hasn't, but nostalgically it will remain a part of our scene like many others.

Ed

AH or Arrrgh Late 1976/1977... which ever way you look at it was a BIG change year for the scene, as I remember.

Went to a few events and during some sets myself and some of the "older" Torch/Catacombes crowd just sat and watched in err WTF mode as the likes of Colin Curtis, Ian Levine etc dedicated half their set to what was then regarded as the "New Sounds" of northern soul. Plays included stuff like...Open Sessame, So is the Sun, and loads of other Funk Based stuff that was I think, mainly from the New York scene via Blackpool Mecca.

PS. That`s also when as I recall the dance style changed to the kinda stomp shuffle on the spot style that suited the funky stuff better.

I was doing St Ives all through 77until it shut in the October & the sounds mainly crossed over between St Ives & Cleethorpes. Black Soul must have passed us by. Can imagine it going down a storm in those days.

  • 4 weeks later...

Snippet from Black Echoes a year earlier!  Will try and find some from 77.

Some of these are very well known now, but back in 76 they were upfront records!

Yeah covered up by Sam at St Ives/Cleethorpes...Dont think it hit Wigan until after it was uncovered but could be wrong

I still cant get out of the habit of calling Joey Dee - How can I forget, 'Struttin' Time' either ... That Miracle Love is really bugging me🤪

Please let me know if you find out what "Miracle Love" really is👍

Joey Dee instrumental, which is the side I remember being big, is the tune that goes through my head all the next day after an allnighter, even if it wasn't played!

Probably me being off target mate - It was one of the ones with miracle in the title that could pass off (at a push) as The Sweet Three

‘Miracle Love’ was actually Ruth Christie, ‘Mystery of a Miracle’ on Tide.

Thanks for putting me out of my misery mate 🍻

New to me. Was it a biggie all over?

It wasn't until Sept 76 that I started going to cwg nighters, so may have missed this in the plethora of new sounds being played.

I don't remember it either. Not a bad tune to be fair, strange how some pass right over your head. I don't think it could have been played for long or we'd have all known it.

Sam was the only DJ I heard play the Ruth Christie. He did play it for a while but it was never going to be a monster sound without the Casino getting behind it. I liked it and still do but had completely forgotten it ‘til l saw the list.

Plenty of others on that list that did go big before The Casino got behind them though - The first three mainly wouldnt you say ?
