macca
My pre-ordered copy arrived from Amazon today. Well chuffed. Couldn't put it down. I think we can say that it's a true warts and all look at the scene. About time too!! Link to comment Social source share
Roburt
Book excellent for the most part - great pics, though captions would've added something. Dx Well most people here will know lots of the folk who feature in the photos in the book. It shouldn't be beyond our capabilities to draw up a list of captions ourselves that SoulSers can type up & print off ............ I'll make a start .......... Page ?? (it's the ones It put up in Post #19 of this thread): Mike Bird & Stu Mumby (Hull lads) + A.N.Other outside Wheel 11th July 1970. ......... who was on that night (live act) ? macca
I thought Ian Levine was commendably conciliatory too. People should definitely buy this book. 1 Link to comment Social source share
Frankie Crocker
Finished reading it last night. Enjoyed it very much. A useful addition to the books on the subject. Well researched. Really insightful comments. Congratulations on getting Butch to contribute - a mate of few words but always worth paying attention to. Ian Levine's contributions were excellent. The chronological structure was spot on - all the key periods given their due. Really enjoyed Delise 's vignettes - if you're reading this, tell John that D & C will be in the Arkle pub before the Southampton match. Hugely enjoyed Joel's contribution at the end - wonderful to see 'Soul Pupils' like Joel and Ollie carrying the scene forward. Anyone interested in Northern Soul should read this book - the illustrations are a mixed bag, some being familiar, others fresh and several redundant - judged on the text alone, it is compulsive reading. Dean
Well most people here will know lots of the folk who feature in the photos in the book. There's a page inside the back cover that has some references to the photo plates, but incomplete in my copy, and some simply state something like "photo booth 1976" or something like that, don't have the book in front of me at the moment. I finished reading through it last night and really enjoyed it. I thought some of the text on the photo pages strangely didn't apply to the photo but that's a small criticism. From a personal perspective I'd like to mention the double page pic of Strat Kirby and Angela Midgely, (towards the back of the book, as I said don't have copy in front of me for the page number), I trhink it's after a Clifton Hall nighter and think I can remember that night (I'm not the Dean that's in the pic with them). Really knocked me back to see that picture, never seen it before. Angela died in a fire in Bradford 2010 in suspicous circumstances, her partner at the time Strat has been facing his own 'demons' for some time. I sent his sister a copy of the book to give to him, hopefully a reminder of happy times. Strat was a 'Mod' during the returners phase, think it was Top Cat Scooter Club, Bradford, if memory serves. He got into the music through that interest and his Sister Cathy was a Wigan regular for a while. Angela had more than her fair share of problems later on, but I always thought she was a really nice person to be around and have fond memories of her. Nice picture. 2 Link to comment Social source share

Guest Byrney
I have now read this cover to cover twice in two sittings. In my view this is the best book on the subject by far and the only one that gets the Stafford / post Stafford era which all others fail to do. It doesn't hold back, warts and all and is visually stunning. I also love the words of Joel, Ollie etc at the end which actually gives me a bit of hope. Ive been recommending this far and wide, propper quality and argurs well for the film. Link to comment Social source share

hullsoul
Onto the last few pages & I've really enjoyed it,certainly brought a few memories back that I'd conveniently sifted out the memory banks. The ones mainly of how bloody frightening some kids that we shared many of our nights with & in some cases called mates were.I wonder how many of the new wave wannabe soulies would be so keen to join the fun if things were the same today Certainly reminded me of how bloody exciting it all was, brought back the memories of how devious & dodgy you had to be to get everything in place each week.............I wouldn't change a thing Cheers Martyn PS Seemed strange seeing a small piece & photo's of my older brother in. 1 Link to comment Social source share
Souledtrafford
Just finished the book and found it a good read. There is, perhaps, too much given over to the drug scene, as it wasn't something that everybody embraced, and not enough on other aspects of the music and what the music is all about. Reading some of the tales about Wigan make me glad in a way that I missed it when I was travelling around the country following a football team. But reading all about it does make you wish that you had experienced it at first hand. Link to comment Social source share
