Top Tips For 2014

Hi all,

Well, its that time of year again thumbsup.gif

It's 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... so, as it's now a Soul Source tradition, which started in 2007, here we go again!

Here's your opportunity to tip the tunes in your box for future greatness, during the forthcoming year... or simply list any number of records that you'd like to recommend to other Soul Sourcers.

You might be a DJ with that tasty unplayed, unknown, hardly played or semi-known 45 stuck in the back of your box that you'd love to play out... but haven't quite got around to it... yet!

You might be a collector, sitting on a tune that you know, if it got into the right hands, could become massive in the next 12 months.

It could be an LP track that, for whatever reason, has never been given the recognition it deserves.

It might be a tasty 'B' side that, given the right exposure, might just have what it takes to become a monster!

We're talking, Northern, Modern, Crossover or 'Just Soul' biggrin.png Whatever floats your boat!

With increased diversity around these days, this should be an interesting list!

How about those funky groovers. Are they now providing a rich new seam of quality music to add to the Northern playlists?

No need to post sound clips. Just let us know what you've got that you think deserves a really big plug in the coming year!

I quite like the Howeefeel "People Of The World" I picked up from Jason at the same time as the Valdons.  The Valdons is great, That funky kid Andy Whitmore put me onto that one, deffo worth some exposure at soul venues.

Cheers Peter, yes that's right. Have played it on the Radio and various gigs over the past 18 months.

 

A few others are picking up on it and I feel it could well go on, at least in crossover circles, to be a classic.

Well said that man - If someone puts a record up they wanna hear 'out 'n' about' next year (They're tip), that some may have heard 20 odd years ago, I don't think it a hanging offence.....Yes, 'it's' been done - well let's do 'it' again shall we?!!!

 

I really do think I'll be off on my long awaited 'Northern Soul Gap Year' very soon - I hope to see some of you on my return (If I bother) :wink:

Another I picked up of Fish at the same time is The Dynamites feat Charles Walker (Little Charles).  "Still Can't Get You Out Of My Heart"  came out on the album "Love Is Only Everything.  But the flip of the 45 I didn't know as it only came out on the US take of the album or so I believe. "Get Up On Living"  is a great little number from the band.

I doubt either of the above will go big but I'm not sure many tips will get a spin on todays scene let alone go big.

Well, after a bumpy start, I think we're getting somewhere!  :)

 

Some really great contributions from all around, with a few half decent newer cuts and a couple of surprise 'revivals' have made this all really interesting.

 

And, from many of the comments I've read and received, there appears to be quite a few folk genuinely interested and grateful for the music that's been suggested, so please keep 'em coming and don't be bashful!

Here's a recent numero thing that went under the radar. This was recorded in the '70s and we played this off a crappy cassette in my interview and the mastertapes were found in a load of stolen tapes and numero just released this:

The travesty is ,if it hadn't been for the numero group ,we never have heard this,let alone been able to own a copy of two great sides for so little money .

Proof that we need to support these good people who work hard to dig deep and find this stuff .

Its not all about finding and owning big ticket rare records!

I totally agree Rob and the guys at Numero do a great job. They dig deep them selves plus have a wide network of peeps that help them. Along the same vain Nev I'm sure you'd want to big up Soul Junction who do an equally great job.

 

As for Kirsty's offering of Fourth Level, unless more copies have turned up and she knows something I don't, there just aren't enough copies around for it to go big this year. As far as I know there are 4 real vinyl copies on 3 continents and not all with DJ's. I have a copy, but the other three I believe are with collectors and the reality is that I don't play out enough to really make that much impact on any record. It might become a hot topic this year, a swapped soundfile etc, but a big record, ie the general punters paying on the door, kind of known, don't think so.

 

Think there is always a danger of this thread becoming 'I know something you don't know' a form of elitism. Where as I thought the thread was about records that have been known amongst a few collectors breaking through to being really popular.

Just bought the notations hadn't properly listened to it before. 

 

The problem is that virtually everything that we tip will have been played before somewhere at sometime, but like a lot of last hour Mecca spins or quite a few one or two time spins at at other clubs back in the 70's they were not heard by many but a lot became popular later, these are the types of tunes we can discover/rediscover, or new releases or releases of unissued stuff. As I missed from 1981 to 1995 there is a lot of stuff that is new to me this will be the same for others on here. Not everyone is like Sean, Chalky or Steve G who have collected from when they started right through to now. So instead of being negative lets look at what's tipped you never know something might grab you that you know of and haven't listened to before. In a way this is a bit like tape swapping in the 70's.

I agree with you Mark these topics can be a great way to pick up something you don't know or even slipped you by.  I only commented on the 2007 list as I was surprised to see so many that were already well established at then time, some over many years.  Sean also asked the question did any of them make it, I answered as I said  :thumbsup:

Anyway been some good tips so far, especially the new releases/discoveries.

And more in recent times, I think we could add 'it could be a recent release that's been laying dormant for decades or something recently recorded that simply has the right 'sound'.

Had 800 people going wirl dat the recent Nürnberg Soul Weekender and set the floor on fire at our local Reggae Steady Soul new years eve allnighter. Rightly so.

Yup same here mate (over 20 years actually) :P I don't think it was ever played to death though, so this 'random grab' may have reminded some (myself included) how good it is once again :thumbsup: 

 

I think maybe some got the impression that this thread is for complete newies only, when it is actually 'top tips' (which could be anything) It's back on track now anyway, good thread that it is :wink:

A top tip for 2014 might for more Dj's to be a bit braver and ignore the incessant diatribe against new releases and and anthing less than 100mph, could 2014 be the year when the soul gets put back into Northern ?

I am not inviting any kind of negative debate when I say this, its purely a personal observation, I think there have been some crackin tunes posted so far, but very few of them would be suitable for an Allnighter IMVHO, some mixed in cleverly by very good DJ's could make it, most wouldn't....having said that, most would sound great at a Modern/Crossover Night....

Last entry from me...a marmite tune for sure, but hasnt been off my player all Christmas & I lurrrrvvvveee it, a bit twee maybe & real instruments would have been a bonus, but dropped into a set at the right place, right time I think this could become a bit of an anthem....
