So how many dj on here with bootlegs and re-issue vinyl?

Just wondering if you DJ for yourself or for the people who come to dance at gigs?

I have been to so many gigs in my time that have an empty dance floor because the DJ in his spot plays OVO that nobody else (or very few people) want to dance too.

Lots of local venues (South Yorks) and some not so local.

I'm not going to mention specific venues but trust me there have been a few of them over the years.

So you're saying that certain dj's choose to play unpopular records. Not sure why any dj would build a collection of records that punters didn't like. They wouldn't get many bookings. As for boots are you saying that anyone should be able to play popular records from boots to keep the dance floor busy? I think you're missing quite a few points.

But why would they not admit to it?

Surely the point of music gigs in any form is for the people who come to hear it! Almost any OV is a remake of someone elses record in the first place! especially on the Northern scene.

I have known it happen mate lol but I just mean local gigs where a record collector does an hour spot etc.

pete was starting to write the same sort of post, as this guy/girl got a problem with djs that try to do things right or prefers

the dj who spends £50 (or todays djs £5000)  on a set of boots etc records that would fill most dance floors at most venues and give it the large one....seen a few of these over the years!!

I have nothing against anyone who wants to collect rare records that's up to them, I just don't understand the point about OVO gigs.

As for giving it the large one I completely understand that too :-( to many people do that on both sides of the argument.

How so?

It's only a rare soul scene if the DJ playing is interested in record collecting and not putting on a dance gig!

The people going to dance gigs go to dance not to sit about a listen to a DJ who wants to show off his record collection.

Imho the Northern scene is a dance scene how else would 60's pop music (not so rare) have such a large following on the Northern scene?

Just out of curiosity do OVO DJ's pay royalties to the artists for playing there records out to the public or does the morality thing stop at buying the record?

My understanding is that the Northern Soul scene was built around rare records, rather than rare recordings.

Bootlegs and pressings are pieces of plastic with rare recordings cut into them, often with dodgy sound quality.

'It's all about the music' is often given as an excuse for playing boots too. For me, it's always been about those genuine rare records, where the DJ that fills the dance floor with those records is king.

morality may be seen as a strong word by some but yep that's part of it. The other thing is that ovo dj's spend a lot of money and time in building collections and discovering new records. For many it's their livelihood. 

Imagine that you'd travelled to the states, unearthed an unknown record, bought it back and the record became massive. Then three months down the line someone somehow counterfeited it and started playing it. Wouldn't you be angry?

Loads of other reasons too. Well be here all night mate!

I am not saying they play them from boots I am saying that the scene was not built on rare records alone. Hence my not getting the point of people calling it a rare soul scene.

Why do dance gigs with records nobody wants to dance to? You are either a rare soul DJ or a Northern Soul DJ they cannot be the same thing.

Of course they can be the same thing. And yes, some records have been played because they are rare, not necessarily because they are good soul records. But that becomes rather subjective.

Sorry Pete but this has haunted me for years. I understand that some people want to own an original record just as I understand with paintings but I do not understand the point of being a DJ if your not going to play the music that people want to dance to if you don't have it on an original copy?

Reading your posts on this topic I would assume you were naïve and with that in mind a youngster new to the scene, but looking at your contributions to other topics you must be at least 50 and visited notable venues including Wigan.

I just think this is some sort of wind up and if not you have not learned much about the scene over the years.

It looks to me as if the thread starter is referring to Original Vinyl Only do's as a Chinstrokers get together, for those who appreciate the obscure with little regard for the ability of the attendees to dance to said records.

Whereas you can also go out to a night where every record played is a "top 500", "battered to death" oldie that everybody can dance to, BUT played from Original Vinyl.

Incidentally, some of those records played at the Chinstroking Festival  where nobody can dance to them very often are played at the Battered to death Oldies nights 5 years later - played from Boots.

Just my opinion

Nope, I will dance to most things that get my feet tapping. I don't however wonder if it is being played on an original recording or not.

The whole scene has been built around original rare records...years ago and up to the present day....that's what it's all about to me anyway...kind regards....Rob

LOL, is that a joke?

Yes I went to Wigan among others and the scene I got into was more about the music than whether it was an original or not and neither did 99% of the other people who were there. The rare record thing was more about a DJ wanting to get the upper hand on the other DJ's but to us the music was what it was about and nothing else.

I admit I might not have caught up with all the threads here yet, but this is a sincere question and an observation personal to me…I’m not trying to fuel a fire.

I listen to Northern Soul (DJ’ed) shows on the BBC, SoundCloud, etc, (plenty listed here on SS in the Soul Radio events listings) and wonder – do they play from OVO or library content?

If so,

Do I care if it’s radio, stream, etc from library…No.

Do I care if it wasn’t OVO at a venue…Yes.

Do I play (at home) re-issues & boots (unwittingly /naïve)…Yes.

Well if you went to Wigan you will have noticed records were dropped (not played anymore) once they had been booted ?

Ok, lets get this thread back on topic.

back in the day (Lets take Wigan for an example) DJ's of the day went out of their way to cover records up and give them false names and titles. Was this because they wanted to be 1 up on the other DJ's or was it because it was a rare record? (the point here is, did they want people to come to listen to them because they had that record or because it was a rare record) You see that's the difference for me between a DJ and a rare record collector.

You can play whatever you like at home mate.

I occasionally play the spoons when am cleaning windows. That is very occasionally, as I hardly ever clean the windows. That is a rather different story and down to my mentalist issues.

In your dreams mate lol

Some were dropped because the DJ had lost a record only he had to that point (even OV records were dropped when another DJ had an OV copy) it had nothing to do with boots alone.
