I get folks want to know what prices records sell for via auctions. Especially perhaps collectors, sellers OR those that have the record in their collection that is being auctioned and therefore want to know if it has “ gained” or not…but it feels to me like it is becoming a subject epidemic.

The internet has certainly fuelled the epidemic. Some of the prices I see are beyond loopy. Anyway.

I always like to have a look at the auction results; it's part of what makes up my overall interest in the northern soul scene. I don't collect anymore, and I'm not a seller. Just an interested voyeur.

Certainly a hot topic worth discussing. The auctions of major UK dealers throw up some interesting talking points. More importantly, they give exposure to some very scarce records, often with anecdotal detail. Prices may be a sore point but they can be a guide for buyers and sellers. Just recently it appears though a few top collections have been put up for auctions suggesting a turning point of sorts. Some auctions prompt collectors to ‘cash in’ by trying to sell records to disappointed underbidders, something that wouldn’t happen if auction results weren’t publicised. I really look forward to Zanetti and Mick putting up John and Tim’s results on a regular basis - the figures achieved will be quite something to look back on in the years ahead.

We are talking 2 main auction results being posted as discussion topics in the discussion forums

Which should work out one jm topic per week and one aa topic every 2 weeks yep?

At the moment we are getting some duplication on the aa results being posted twice which will later message both members to try and resolve

That would then mean we be getting approx 3 auction topics every 2 weeks, which I would say balance wise is ok?

yes Mike, perhaps the duplication/flurry has skewed it for me. I'm not suggesting any of the result topics are dropped. Its my observation of how this part of Northern Soul has developed.

Don't get me wrong i also have posted Auction results. 

It's not just the results that get posted though, it's the is it/isn't value discussions too. 

my post also stemmed from the likes of posts such as "Is Northern Soul in good hands, etc", on the basis some might think it's all about the price you pay. Which i don't remember it being so in the past.

For as long as I can remember (back to '81) the figures that records have changed hands for has been a huge talking point so I can't see how you can see it as a 'new' thing ... ?

don't you think it's reached a point where its a Commodity Market discussion in the same way as Stocks & Shares, Bit Coin, etc. The value is the price.

if you are into collecting records it’s only natural you are going to be interested in what is happening with all things music Including auction results 

Same with car tans discussion forums

People with interest discussing all aspects , especially values achieved at auction

I like looking at the final prices if only for entertainment value. Pat Brady's auctions rarely make these pages. Always seem to show high end bids.

Well you could always post the results here yourself rather than relying on someone else to do it.

My biggest problem with Pat's auctions is that they tend to contain pretty run-of-the-mill tunes that would generally not be considered as 'auction items' , five pages of them at present.

John and Tim's do attract the more unusual and bigger ticket records which is why they attract more attention on here I'd say.

I wonder why that is? A sample of current offerings reveals mainly set sale items at inflated prices, some of which may reappear in a few weeks time. ‘Results’ of this ‘auction’ are not worth tracking or publishing but collectors may be intrigued by what they see from time to time.

I certainly think the whole focus on prices, be they via auction or otherwise, is pervasive in relation to other topics around our collecting/listening/buying hobby. Like others here I do love to see what prices records fetch, and sometimes Im surprised, not just by high prices, but also by low prices relative to the quality and/or rarity of the record, and herein lies my main gripe about the whole prices thing. 

If only there was the same level and volume of discussion and interest about how good this or that record is, (regardless of value) instead of just what price it fetches. I feel I learn so much on these and FB pages about values of records, but in contrast so little about ‘good records’. Surely thats the problem; not enough balance. Thats not a criticism of the info provided here about Auction results; keep em coming, no problem. But why is there so little discussion (Generally not just here, Northern-wise) about ‘good records’, be they £5 or £5000?  Loving music got me into this thing, not a love of ‘commodity’ values.  If you’ve ever played (privately to a mate, or publicly via djaying) a good cheap record, and witnessed the sheer unbridled pleasure it gives someone who likes it and is overjoyed to find its ‘only’ £20, you’ll know exactly what Im talkin about. Very true, I have sold loads of my collection in the last 4/5 years, lots left to keep me going, but having sorted everything out, as to what to keep, and what to sell, guess what?  most of the records that make my 'liver quiver', and were to keep, were as we say in collecting terms 'Cheapies'!

Totally agree with judging and enjoying records on their musical merit as opposed to selling price.  But once a cheap easy to obtain record becomes widely popular and everybody can get a copy it won’t set you aside from anybody else who aspires to be a DJ.  The best DJs can draw on years of acquired knowledge and developing an ear for the best sounds them mixing up rare and lesser known cheap sounds.

Tim, I seem to remember a few months ago a topic on here asking members to recommend cheaper records from their collections. I bought a couple of the recommended 45's myself.

Very similar story here left with boxes of great cheap records but the higher priced are mostly gone.  Hearing them for the first time and tracking them down was great but over the years they have slowly been moved on.  If money we’re no object I would have kept them all but that wasn’t an option for me.

 

i do see some things now fetching much higher prices than I sold records for but I won’t be alone in that.

I do agree with what you say in your post, but I dare not mention records I like, because there are people who take great delight in telling everyone they are rubbish etc and don't like them.

Pats auctions don’t end on a specific day like the others. End dates are all over the place so you would have your work cutout to keep up with it. 

The problem with discussing the merits of records, whether expensive, or cheap?

We all have different tastes.

Especially after all the years have gone by. At one time, all we wanted was to dance.

But sitting at home with a drink, listening to tunes as an old person?

Completely different kettle of fish.

All you can do is recommend something to the other members of the forum.

But you need to be prepared for negative comments, as well as positive ones. After all, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things.

Regarding auction finishing prices?

I also enjoy reading them, and I’m very appreciative of the members who take the time to collate and list them here for us all.

I totally understand the incredulous reactions to some of the winning bids. But at the same time, I have in the past, paid over the odds to obtain a must have record. So I kind of understand the rush of blood that is auction fever.

I realise that we’ve been saying for 40 years, that the end is nigh on high prices. But I genuinely do think we have passed the hiatus.

Some tunes that were on everyone’s wants list a few years ago, are now impossible to sell at their four figure prices.

The big oldies however, just seem to go on forever.

They sit nicely in the new sanitised marketed world the scene is heading towards.

For me it’s the circle of life,as a kid it was all about the oldies,then it slowed down to the beat ballads and Stafford era type stuff,then came the xover and a bit of modern with a sprinkle of Latin stuff! Now we’re back to the oldies😂 (to which I don’t mind personally) but then I guess it depends what you call an oldie?

That's something like my journey through the different era's of Northern Soul.  I call them classics now and don't call them oldies anymore.

It's all up to individuel perspective.

We used to call records oldies back in the mid seventies because they had been played 5 years earlier at the Twisted Wheel. Yet there are records that are called sixties newies that have been played for 30 years or more!
