Well I'm no expert but I first heard this about 10 years ago on an 'Acid Jazz' CD ohmy.gif ------brilliant tune imo

Jez, Robbie Vincent first played this as an import on his Saturday morning show on radio London.

Within weeks it had become an absolute ANTHEM, and remains close to many peoples hearts.

Just oozes class, like so much from this underated singer.

Just goes to prove that there was an awfull lot more to the "Southern Soul Scene" than Jazz Funk and commercial dance tracks.

I only discovered the existence of this thread yesterday after it was resurrected and then spent a thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours in a pc loop listening, reading and thinking about which tunes I could add. None of that bumpy thumpy music ( which I love to bits) here as I went way back in time for this one.

Right then here we go...

here's some that's doing it for me

Brown Sugar - I'm goin through changes now (Capitol) ... just flipped this over recently, absolutely love it!!

Sharon Mcmahan - Get out of my life (Columbia) ...don't know if this is really classed as modern or not, but just female 70's soul perfection imo,

GC Cameron - You're what's missing in my life (Motown) ...hadn't played this in years, just brilliant

Al Hudson - Why must we say goodbye (abc) ...love it

Karin Jones - Ready, ready love (Handshake) ...forgot how good this was, TUNE

David Ruffin - Rode by the place (Motown) ...seen this one mentioned on here a few times and didn't realise i had it, lovely tune with heartbreaking lyrics, straight in the play box, thanks

William Bell - Yesterday i lied (Mercury) ...reminds me of venues like Parkers, The Kilt, Thorne etc, although don't think it was ever spun back then

Willie Tee - Teasin' you again (Grapevine) ...wish i had an original copy of this, so so good

3 Degrees - You're the fool (Pye) ...would get me dancing anyway

Bobby Thurston - Treat me the same way (Mainline) ...probably my favourite tune from back in the day

Great call.

By the way, I´ve always thought that Randy Brown was a member of the Newcomers.

That´s what is says in all reference books and album liner notes, but Randy Brown himself,

when visiting the UK, said that he never was a member of that group!

Anyone who can shed some light on the matter?

Very very rare on a 7" release. Only know of 1 or 2 copy's. On Blaster like the album.

7" version a slightly different take as well & also shorter.

thanks for info....what about cost etc?

About £150 to £200 for a Blaster album but you'll have to raise the bar a hell of a lot higher than that for a 7" copy if it ever becomes available.

Also got a legitimate release on one of the Keb Darge BBE Soul Spectrum albums but you don't see vinyl copy's of them that often these days. Would guess around £25 for a vinyl copy or around £10 for the CD album. Both the Soul Spectrum albums are worth tracking down as some fantastic tracks on them.

It is soulfull black american music that utilizes modern day and current up to date production techniques.99.9% of the records mentioned so far are just 70's & 80's oldies. They ceased to be modern soul thirty years ago . The problem now is many hang on to old well respected artists doing new stuff which is often very poor, or new artists doing old stuff. Very sad imo. However if that way inclined try Lew Kirtons take on 'Open the door to your heart' cd cut. I like Elements of life 'Live your life for today' .as being a good example of modern soul, infact try the whole cd.

I guess definitions are pretty much down to individuals judging by some of the tracks/artists listed. You could say a "modern" record is anything recorded post 1969.

At the end of the day its what engages our head, heart and feet. Labels don't seem to me to be that important. Ultimately it's all Soul isn't it?
