Sorry mate this argument holds no water at all, I recorded tapes of Searling playing Bobby Goldsboro, Chapter Five, John Gary, I have other tapes of him playing Gary Lewis and the Playboys...

====

DIANE RENAY,HAPPY CATS & JONATHAN'S EXPERIENCE WERE ALL SEARLINGS BLOOPERS TOO..

BUT HIS OUTPUT FAR OUTWEIGHS RUSS'S IN TERMS OF QUALITY,THERES NO ARGUMENT IN THAT

MY POINT IS THAT RUSS PROVIDED AN ALTERNATIVE TO OTHER DJ'S AND THIS COMPLIMENTED THE OVERALL WIGAN PACKAGE (IN MY OPINION)

Tough choices to make on this weekend...

Soul Revolution + 100 Club anniversaries in London or dancing in a shopping mall?

Is there air con in the shopping mall? It might swing it for some punters as the air con is crap in London?

Have fun where ever you decide to go...

It may not be everyones cup of tea but when people travelled from Australia to attend and are coming back again then it just shows what a wonderful place the Casino was and of course it was made up of wonderful people who get a chance to meet again

See what all that sun on the top of your head can do to your brain. I'd sooner stand in a puddle of piss in Peterborough that go within a hundred miles of Wigan's Walmart experience.

Take care,be safe & remember, "Wigan's a place not a bloody way of life",

Spot.

Pete i thought your posts on Notts soul nights have been eloquent and thoughtful in the past and your description of the Souled Out days was a good response to the critics, however i think it's wrong to suggest that people who don't want to hear oldies all night and want to hear soul from every era and new to their ears are 'chin strokers'. I listen and prefer stuff i haven't heard before and i am a dancer. I agree that the poking fun and the way people into oldies dress is getting a bit 'old' now but there is a definate split between 'northern' and 'rarely played' soul, both however are dance scenes and have excellent dancers. It's wrong to suggest people who want to move on from the Wigan sounds and even Stafford in some cases are not dancers who get a thrill dancing to the music and i don't think it's just the 'soul police' who want to move on and hear something fresh.

All the best

Matt

Well put Matt. For me, the people who have moved on and listen to EVERYTHING and CAN dance to ALL tempos, are the TRUE dancers. Dancing was and is about responding to music, not stagnating to it. I've listened and danced to Northern, funk and Jazz and enjoy them ALL.

In truth,

the stafford dancers were far better than the the wigan ones, they WERE the Wigan ones who moved on and developed, through listening and adapting and responding, so that they were able to dance to WHATEVER they wanted....not just banging uptempo, but to 'SOULFUL' music! They were not afraid to get up and dance to anything as long as it was good! So, a bunch of peole who stopped going and now return and dont get it, have no place critiscising dancers. From what I see at oldies events, its a very poor version of what went on at Wigan. We were very young then...seeing a fat bloke doing acrobatics badly hardly cuts the mustard now. In fact, a lot of the time im not sure if they have fallen over or their doing floor work :P:D Have fun at the shopping Centre, at least the St Johns will have to be there by law.

Intersting comment about the dancers, I felt that when we run the City Club if someone like Carl Piper turned up there was an immediate buzz that more than matched the appearnce of a top jock, the guys that can cut the mustard are few and far between , there is a lot more"No ones there" smile on you face dancing for the average person, however if anyone who would like to know what the casino was like then check out Kingsway hall, there are some brilliant dancers there, many wearing origonal style clothes and the place looks like a mini Wigan with that same atmospere and the djays are top notch

this is Coops appraisal, hope he doesnt mind me using

The last time I went to the Kingsway Hall in Forest Town I was a bit disappointed.

It was the last Saturday in April and each dee-jay seemed to be out gunning each other in the 100 mph stakes.

Obviously they weren't, but that's how it was perceived by me and a couple of other attendees.

The majority of those attending that night lapped it up but for me, if it's gonna be a night of 'oldies' I (and others) at least need a variance in tempo and style.

Yesterday (May 31st) the balance was restored, both he residents Ian Gee and Carl Piper varied their sets and the guest Pete Eccles was spot on and did as good an hour the restraints of this oldies institution would allow, great music all evening.

Top night, and once again, recommendable to all those who like there northern steeped in the 1960s.

As a side note, whilst having a ciggie with Dave from Grimsby we noted number plates on cars (NOT OCD just an exercise in seeing where they were from) and it seems the client group were from... Wigan, Stafford, Tamworth, Leicester, Skegness, Peterborough amongst others.... No a bad travelling radius for a small but perfectly formed homage to 1960s Northern Soul.

Was looking at Google estimated pay per click sposored listing rates they start at 4p and go as high as 15 quid to get top spot on "cheap insurance" thats probably why insurance isnt that cheap if google are collecting all the £15

the more people search the higher the fee goes

just for fun I put a few names in

Soul Source did very well at 35p  and this is what they had in common with Posh, however it was also 24p for all the people who misspelt it as Soul sauce :)

Northern soul came in at 25 p but there were lots of derivatives such as Northern soul music 32p which may have watered the searches down

Wigan casino came in at 72 p , however it may be boosted by the odd gambler looking for a casino in Wigan g.gif

Beleive it or not, Russ Winstanly is 17p and you will be disapointed to know the mighty Richard Searling is only 4p :( however it may cheer you up to know Kev Roberts :P:D and Ian Levine are also 4p and

proves old Russ has still got it guys :D

Will someone take a photo of the Pissy toilets please in the shopping centre or will Boots be giving out drugs as a thankyou for nostalgia.

I see this as bizzare.

When I was young I played Rugby league at Swinton - The ground was called Station road. It no longer exists. Could you imagine turning up at a housing estate(Which it is now) dressed in the famous V shirt and shorts and playing rugby just to reminisce about the glory days. We would be carted off to the nearest asylum.

Russ you did great job in the 70s now let go or get a therapist!

Why re-live old memories when I can make some new ones?

Berlin, Hip City on Saturday, then ever moving forwards with Soul Revolution, and onto 100 club.MY Wigan memories are still in tact and a bit precious but only to me.

Sorry Stef this is about Wigan Casino in a shopping mall - and the drudgery of "celebrating" WCs 35th anniversary with Russ and friends not general oldies nights which we all know exist up and down the land.

BTW how do you know where the cars come from, did they have little stickers on the back like in the 60s :wicked: Or were they so old you could still look in the AA guide and check where they were registered?

www.wigan-casino.co.uk and then there is a further link to the BBC with some more photos

there will be 60 photos on display at the cafe

Russ is on radio 2 ,radio 5, radio Shefield and radio Cambridge and poss on tv so I guess he`s not relying on me to persuade the high priests to pop down

Steve tells me that the free badges will be various colours and will be pulled out of a box, lucky dip style the unlucky ones will get a badge worth about 20 quid and the ones who get the remaining 8 rare black ones will be quids in on ebay :wicked:

I`m kinda looking at it as a cafe sounds a bit cooler than a shopping centre but I do get the point, I guess people will turn up for the same reason 12000 went to a carpark in London to celebrate a place long gone, funilly enough they did reopen the cafe and they hold lots of tv shows there.

Think if people who are interseted in what it was like but never went should check Kingsway Hall out

Coops did the number plates thing, he is very clever, our old letters for P`boro were EG, the Mayors car is EG 1 and its worth about £150,000 funny old world,

If RW is doing it right, how do you explain the complaints about last years effort on this linked thread?

https://www.soul-source.co.uk/Wigan-C...shopping+centre

I'll ask you again: As Rus's mouthpiece, why did you never go on that thread to answer the many complaints? You could do it now perhaps. If you like, I'll start a new thread in Lookbacks linking to it, then it can be at the top of the list again for easier reference. :D

I didnt attend, prior engagement, so wasnt for me to answer complaints.

PS. If you're struggling a bit, remember you haven't played the "charity" card yet. wink.gif

Like most good promotors Russ is well aware of areas that needed improving, he has taken steps to make sure this event runs smoothly including more bar staff.

Mind you, they did have quite a few years to sought out the queues at the Casino and they didnt get that right

Yes but I think I am right in saying that these were all known / played by or before 1977. Possibly L J Johnson which came later (and is one of Ian's I have it on Mercury), but the rest certainly ain't after 77.

I thought about Posse too, but that was 77 I am sure. Karen Young "Too much of a good thing"? is this a made up one MArk (as in Casino Classics)?

So the challenge still stands - a good Russ discovery after 1977 please.

Had a great chat with Russ over pint last year, and he gave me an insight to all the goings on at the Casino , who left or was pushed and why, he also told me that many of the records on Top 500 were his discoveries and he had to lend his copy to other jocks so the record was played all night, he also decided how nany records could be broken and how often they could be played, in other words he pulled all, the strings and conducted the orchestra

I will speak to him and see what recordfs he can claim as his, see if we can put that to bed

Also I noticed a comment about richard Searling not selling out and not a money grabbing bugger, but he actually djs for more than Russ, am I missing something?

Just looked at the site...its F--king hideous. A shop with shirts , mugs, towels etc. Like a stall on Blackpool pleasure beach!! Words cannot describe what a tacky, souless fool RW is. He would sell ANYTHING to make a buck and definetely sold his 'soul' way back in about 1980. Almost makes me ashamed that I went....

don't be ashamed Paul, we must all remember, there was a time when we enjoyed the casino..... thirty odd years ago but it did hit the spot once-upon-a-time.

I agree, but RW knows no bounds and has NO PROBLEM selling thousands of peoples memories for a few quid. He NEVER had any taste and he certainly NEVER will. A sad old has been whos squueezing every last drop of money from what was a very cool UNDERGROUND scene. Its the same with their making the play in to a film. The guardian said that the writer Mick Martin, went to the Casino. Did he f--k, I took him to Parr hall a couple of times in the 80s and he wasn't really into it! :wicked: thats it. But Russ and Mick want everyone to think the film will be based on fact..so the truth gets re-written....BADLY.

1) There's nowt (much) wrong with Peterborough

2) WIGGAN'S a DEE-JAY not a place or way of life and

2a) WIGAN makes chuffing good pies!

Coops, yes your right, there nowt wrong wi Peterborough but it was the best PPP I could come up with at the time, so no offense to Peterborough. Secondly it's Wiggin's the Dj not Wiggan's or are we both wrong & it's Woggan's?? Finally I have no idea if pie's in Wigan are any good, do you seriously think I managed to eat ANYTHING before, during or after the nighter till at least Tuesday?? I have no idea why, must have been that giddy with excitement!! :wicked:

hi Paul...

actualy i said sorry to matt, as i was a bit sharp in what i said....read it....just get a bit fed up with the "lets poke at the baggies /oldies crowd"

i never left ..or stopped going ...must admit it did get a bit slow in the 80ts... but hey rolleyes.gif

me...well i'm not fat...and at 53 still do the best i can with floor work etc... not as slick as i was but still enjoy what i do..

yep i still wear baggies....er so what ?

funny?....no one has ever come up to me and said i look a twat as yet.......perhaps it's my near vertical kicks that make em wonder if its a good idea  ?

pete n' susan :wicked: xx

Hi mate...each to his own and im glad your still kicking high. Not being fat helps, i think. BUT, i have seen some very bad attempts in recent years, believe me. And , if you enjoy it, then do it. Im not a dance fascist, I dont care how people dance. But, when the so called 'old timers' start pontificating on it, im quick to step in (not with the 'quickstep' obviously! ).

take care

Paul

don't be ashamed Paul, we must all remember, there was a time when we enjoyed the casino..... thirty odd years ago but it did hit the spot once-upon-a-time.

And there must be some out there, who only knew Wigan around the RW time, granted not many but a few, and just maybe that's enough for them few, a bit of a dance around the pic & mix and there happy

As for making money there always was, and still are plenty of the old brigade doing that, some may well have earned that right, but others :wicked: well let's just say thats a bit debatable, we only have to remember the Badges, 50p Boot legs, dodgy posters at 75p each, it was awash with people trying to make money, hey dont get me wrong the thought of going to a shopping centre realy is quite laughable, I mean OK a drive past if you was in the area just to get a flash back of a time in your youth but a bloody shopping complex.

I think you are confusing PLAYING & DISCOVERING.? Just because you have at ape with Russ playing these on it, doesn't mean he discovered or broke them. That would mean if I did you a tape with loads of tunes on , you would assume I discoverd or broke them. No real logic there. :wicked:huh.gif

APE.....its a sort of hairy creature that swings from the trees. :shades: Or if you like, its what RW is doing now...trying to Ape his brief success in the 70's!
