Mark why do you hold such reverance for RUSS and the CASINO,when by your own admission you only went 2 or 3 times....hardly seems worth it atb tezza

hi terry

know what yer saying mate but despite only going 3 times to the Casino ,and it changing my life FOREVER,,,it was when i got my 1st Wigan Casino live tape from the 5th anniversary (russ's spot ) it just BLEW me away and changed my life even more...as it lead me on a 20 year chase for other casino tapes, and thus collecting from the tapes...ive probably got more Russ Winstanley spins than he had in the first place!!

many of these tapes have Russ's spot s on them and on the whole they are FANTASTIC,,his spots on the tapes generated the most atmosphere and for every 'naff' one he spun theres an equally fascinating one on them...for every naff instrumental theres a fantastic one... for every crass stomper there were 10s of great ones ,his input on the info ive got to me is deserved of praise and not one of continous lambastment and derisory comments although i do understand them...

i know the above is sad and im not trying to rewrite history and there are guys who were actually there but in my opinion on the guy did his bit for the scene and there are people who genuinely like russ as a dj and i happen to like him as a bloke too....

regards

We had this same thread last year-it went on for months. Lots of members from here went (not me before you ask) and people who I respect said it was terrible. C'mon some of you who are going sound like sensible people..IT'S A SHOPPING CENTRE!!! IN WIGAN! And £15 a ticket? Are you that hard up for a night out? If you want a Oldies do in Wigan why not go to the Monaco Ballroom and get cheap entrance and a proper bar and dancefloor (and I think they even play records there too  ).

Anyway, here's the lookback thread from last year

Frankly I think it's pathetic!

If Steph (and no, I don't know him) wants to post up info for people, why shouldn't he.....

What gives a whole lot of people, who I would guess weren't even old enough to set foot in the casino, the right to shoot him down?

Mark,

Not sad at all mate. In fact quite refreshing to see a guy stick by someone he respects in spite of all the crap they have to put up with. Fair play to you Sir.

Pete i thought your posts on Notts soul nights have been eloquent and thoughtful in the past and your description of the Souled Out days was a good response to the critics, however i think it's wrong to suggest that people who don't want to hear oldies all night and want to hear soul from every era and new to their ears are 'chin strokers'. I listen and prefer stuff i haven't heard before and i am a dancer. I agree that the poking fun and the way people into oldies dress is getting a bit 'old' now but there is a definate split between 'northern' and 'rarely played' soul, both however are dance scenes and have excellent dancers. It's wrong to suggest people who want to move on from the Wigan sounds and even Stafford in some cases are not dancers who get a thrill dancing to the music and i don't think it's just the 'soul police' who want to move on and hear something fresh.

All the best

Guess again. I was going to niters before the Casino opened. Not shooting Steph down, he likes the idea, fine by me. What I am shooting at is what I see as a sad, crass, exploitative, greedy, stupid, and frankly morbid attempt to cash in on the Casino again. I went to the place from start to finish, wouldn't have missed it for the world, but it is gone, and dancing in a shopping centre won't change that. Ok the nostalgia scene, for that's what this caters to, will enjoy it, but I would have been less scathing if it were held in a proper ballroom, as an aniversary, for example. Just because it is on the site of the casino, and that is a shopping centre now is stupid in the extreme. Would have been better if it were still a car park. Chuck up a big marquee, put down a portable floor, sorted, but a shopping mall....

Yeah that about sums it up. I'm not against the idea----thats fair play, for an oldies scene (I like oldies. :D ) However isn't there one the following week at King georges in Blackburn? May have been a good idea join forces and use that---its big enough and well suited for that sort of do. folks have only got so much disposeable cash haven't they and to have 2 in 7 days........................................ :D

ok ... sorry matt, i was a bit harsh and narrow viewed.. .....just get a bit "touchy" sometimes...

really though, i and probably most other "oldies" crew like to hear new or lesser known sounds (and the 1000 nd's of underplayed)...problem is when you go to an ACB nite and it is too many at one go, that is half an hour or more standing around...cooling down....it is so often the mix that is wrong.

break new sounds by all accounts, but drip feed it, allow people to get to know the sound while still maintaining that all important full dancefloor and all will be well....

it is also true to say that many newer or even some older sounds simply do not "fit in" easily with that old sound and feel that captured us forever as youngsters...they will not for many ever be accepted,...not because they are poor sounds, some are really good to listen to...and there the new divide begins....and as with your post on another thread...it will or already is happening.

as for the soul police they are sometimes soooooo negative, but hey, there ya go :g:

I was sorry to see you feel ashamed of the "northern soul "tag in the other thread.....

spot on matt, there is definately a split,of that there is no doubt. It just seems to me all this nostalgic stuff seems to go with the oldies only folk, fair enough, good on em.If they can't see that a bit of fun will be had at their expense (right or wrong) it is just a giggle. As far as chin stroking...Hardly call Lifeline, middleton, burnley, barnsley and quite a few more top nighters..for chin strokers only......they all pride themselves on playing feck off dance music, and the soul fans there will soon let em know if they don't get it.atb tezza :D

Jez, the night at King Georges is a slightly different event, in that it would be KGH's regular soul night anyway, and with Richard at the helm it's only fitting it goes under the heading of a Casino Aniversary, having said that if it didn't it would most probably be a sell out just like most of the other KGH nights for the last 13 or so years, irrespective of what might be going on elsewhere,

hmm yeah i can't include it now.

I suppose 'ashamed' is too strong a word. I think what i mean is as usual the press coverage of this event and the view of anyone new to the scene will present it as nothing more than a sad 70s nostaliga trip. As i said, at the end of the day it's got nothing to do with the music, it's just a trip down memory lane for people who want to remember their teenage years in the 70s, otherwise why is it being held in a memorabilia cafe (so what if it's on the site of the Casino). So yet again northern soul is associated with the past, and as an oddity clung onto by a few diehards. As others have said, nothing wrong with a massive dancehall, the music of the time and a couple of thousand ex-Wigan goers enjoying a revival, but this happens regularly anyway and it's called Stoke Kings Hall.

And in answer to an earlier post, i also went to Wigan, for two years in 1980-81 regularly until it closed. I loved it but i have never felt the need to go back, so much more has happened since then, both personally and scene-wise.

Over a thousand turned up last year to dance on the holy grail site of Northern soul,The grande Arcade Wigan It may be a shopping centre now and you have to close your eyes and dream a bit to go back to your youth but only a place like the Casino could pull so many people for an event like this.

Russ tells me that tickets are selling faster than last year and the fire limit has been increased to 2000 for this event.

Now heres my tip for a free nite out

Some of last years badges sold for £100 on ebay ( can only happen with the Casino) this being the 35th Anniversay the badges will go for more so my suggestion is buy a few badges which will only be available on the day ,bang them on ebay and it will cover entrance , drinks and poss a hotel to crash afterwards, also if you buy Steve (the badge man)a pint he might sell you a black badge, i believe there are only ten of these and they will be worth serious a bob or two.

So if you can close your eyes and dream you now where to go and if you cant dream then I beleive Top Man have got a good sale on

for full details check https://www.wigan-casino.co.uk/

Stef, I can't make up my mind whether you are a total c*nt or you think the members on here are. I suspect it's the former.

Can we look at your input to this forum? Last year you made a lot of posts. They were all about either your event in Peterborough or the Wigan shopping centre embaressment. The City Club thing died a death despite your best efforts which included the promotion of Dean Parrish who never turned up and free pizza.

You flogged the Poundland/Wigan night mercilessly beforehand, but then when there were several pages on here of feedback, mainly from people who felt ripped off, you were nowhere to be seen. How do you reconcile this shabby history with your sudden re-appearance here to promote a comedy event?

I wasn't earning 50 quid a week then though! That was a lot of money. Not saying he shouldn't have been paid - just that it's a lot of money for one night in 1976

:huh::P:P:(:Pohmy.gif:g:

Seconded!

I was only 15-16 in 1976, had a Saturday job and the £2-3 I earned from that didn't even cover me Wigan costs every Saturday...made the rest up from pocket money AKA parental handouts...each trip cost me £4...no travel costs cos had free pass on train (courtesy of me da who was a rail worker) then tabs and money in...always had slash in me pockets come Sunday...god job I didn't dabble with consumables cos I couldn't have afforded em wink.gif then I progressed to working more hours when I was a student and the income increased but so did the cost of living so the lot still went on me social life...my parents had to buy my clothes n personals. Then in 1978 I got my first proper job in the Civil Service and I earned the grand sum of £8 a week and out of that I had to support myself as I shared a flat and my rental contribution was £4 a week...not much left for socialising after bills and food but I still managed it somehow.

So yes, to hear that Russ Winstanley was paid £50 for a DJ'ing stint at the Casino tells me that he was well paid for 1976

Oh and another thing, I grew out of the Casino and moved on with my life and musical tastes long before it had closed cos for me the novelty and the need to be part of a cult following became stale and boring...I just got sick to death of the politics and the sounds...a case of "same old same old" for me. The fact that I went every week ad infinitum didn't help I know. And the "final night" bit was the last straw for me as there was more than one but I didn't feel the need to go back and be part of any of that as I had my memories and the place just wasn't the same for me by then.

If I ever do become nostalgic about the Casino circa the time when it was my second home then I get in my car and drive to Wigan from wherever I am, go have a look at where the building once stood, stand or sit, look around and reflect and remember the good old days. I don't feel the need to dance on "the holy grail site of Northern Soul" or to line someone else's pockets for the privilege and even if I did then it would mean more to me to select a familiar outside spot...well after all plenty did just that back in the day eh? I've re-visited that place more than once over the years, both before and after the shopping arcade, precinct, mall or whatever was built and its never even entered my head to go take a look around inside.

Each to their own at the end of the day though but I know I for one won't be forking out shedloads of money on this event

Some very inteesting comments from everyone , good or bad ,its nice of you to bump the event up

Havent been on forums much as since my mother passed away I have become full time carer for my elderly dad, who is suffering from a bad heart and I spend most evenings keeping him company as he is heartbroken .Hope this explains that one.(please no silly comments)

I think the comments that Russ is a money grabbing bloke who is only putting an event on to make big profits could in theory be compared to most promotors of the events that are publisized on this forum, its not a crime to make a few bob, if you compare Russ to those dodgy Arabs I saw in the paper dressed in their pyjamas who are ripping evryone off who lives in this country then Russ looks like a Saint, might have forgiven them if they had bought out the Posh instread of Man city.

With Russ` events you always have a choice , with these robbing gits you havnt.

Was Russ well paid at Wigan, relativly he wasnt, according to the book if Gerrry Marshall had stuck to his word Russ would have took in a grand a night as co promotor by rescuing a struggling venue that really was a bit decrepid,an engineer in Peterborough earnt £100 a week at that time(poss better paid than lads up North)so this equated to half a weeks wage, Tony Blackburn was charging £1000 for an hours entertainment , and he didnt even have to bring records, now not wanting to upset ann of the many Tony Balckburn fans but reckon Russ was better than 5% of Tonys wage.

I also think that to say Russ is a bit of a has been is unfair,he to my knoledge is the third highest paid jock on the cicuit, he commands this with his popularity, both times he attended Peterborough he mixed a refreshing mix in with the records that people expect him to play and each time he had the most people dancing.

Moving on to the event, it seems with most of the high preists on this web site they have moved on to other things, fair play, even if owner of the City Club Steve Jason swears its 80s jazz funk  but I reckon that with the National publicity this event draws ,out of those thousand plus that turn up there will be a hundred or so who could be tempted to return to the scene which I think is pretty good.

I am more than willing to drop flyers out for anyone elses do ,just send me pm, also Steve does put up flyers for any other events on the Wigan website, it does have very high volumes of visitors so may be worth dropping adverts on there www.wigan-casino.co.uk

thanks for everyones support and interest

Not in any way a Tony Blackburn fan, (who is?) But....

Your having a laugh aren't you? Tony Blackburn was a nationaly known DJ. Stop anyone in the street, whatever thair age, they knew who he was. Russ? a geezer Djing in a backstreet club, in a run-down town, playing obscure records to a minority audience. That's the botom line, as far as the world is concerned.

A small fish in tiny pond. Get over it, stop treating him like the 'Star' he never was. He's a ledgend in his own livingroom, nothing more, so stop licking his a*se.

HOW EVER YOU LOOK AT £15-18 IS A RIP OFF AND ...OLDIES WERE NEWIES ONCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Toad my man, just what me and Harpo have been saying for years, thank god for sanity, and l'm officially sane..just ask Shute he'll tell ya

Just cant see the sense in wanting to revive rubble, revive the soul scene, it will benefit everyone in the long run, thats where energy is best spent, l loved the Casino, but it's gone, let it go, let those of us who went and spent many happy times there remember the Casino and what it meant to us. R.I.P., the buildings gone, the landscapes changed, but the music will live forever, even long after we are dead and buried. Surely the music is the most important thing to remember is'nt it !! It is an embarassment to think the fat cat promoters of this 3 ring circus are only interested in what they can get out of it, it's blatently obvious, it's not about the Casino or even the music, if it were they would'nt be making a mockery of the memories of we who went to the Casino and those of us who were there to the bitter end, these are memories l cherish. Many friends have been lost over the years and good memories of them are connected to the Casino, thats the way l want it to stay for me.

It stinks of politics, but then did'nt the scene always?, one day these D.J. promoters might actually do something for us and listen to what we want, and l for one do not want to be forced to remember Wigan Casino for what it is now....a bloody shopping centre for god's sake...............Sorry if l've offended anyone, if l have than will you also be sorry for offending me ??

Picked this thread up from Radio Lancashire its a few examples why people will be attending and why they can close thier eyes and dream, it gives a mini insight to those who never went

Back in 73 it seems I had the best car, a trusty Hillman Super Minx and my good buddy Jonah suggested a trip from Peterborough to Wigan casino, he knew I liked Comercial Motown and stuff like Jerry Williams and promised me we would here all that and more, his description of the beachcomber was like the diner in Happy days, it all sounded great.Yes the car made it and we went in the beachcomber, at that point I think Jonah may have fibbed a bit for his lift, my next experiance was getting lashed at by the bouncer for pushing in the queue , I think this was random etiqutte all through the Casinos history, when I finally got in there was this wall of heat that hit me wow, looking round I thought bit of a dump but eagerly waited for the Motown stuff, you guessed it, not to many by the Supremes and if there had been I reckon wouldnt have known them, sat on the balcony and was entranced by the dancers at the front, the best dancers were respected and given extra room, remember the guy in green and white hooped shirt, the black guy that looked like Arthur Ash and a brilliant girl dancer, they seemed to own the place. There were many good dancers there but it was those Dynamic guys that I wanted to dance like. Not too sure if I ever got that good but remember a year or two later Brian Rae was doing a blinding spot in Mr Ms and I was going hell for leather, the guy in the green and white shirt, think he was from Wolverhampton came up to have a mini dance comp.with me. it really made me feel so proud that he thought I was good enough to be considered to be put in my place.Met my wife on coach trip to the 5th Anniversary and then drifted away from scene for a few years. On my 50th Birthday decided to celebrate by booking Russ Winstanly and Dean Parrish for an event in my home town of Pterborough, a kinda Wigan revisited night, over 500 turned up and were blown away by Dean Parrish then Russ came on and pumped it up even further, finishing with the big 3, getting me grief with the caretakers but what the heck, there were people with tears in there eyes as they remembered. Russ and Dean also turned out to be two great guys and I wish Russ all the best with the 35th Anniversary and thank him for the most wonderful memoriesStef

Hi russ we dont think we are built to play the part of bouncers in the new film about the casino but we could play old age pensioners trying to get into an allnighter wot do you think???

Some excellent memories from where many friendships were formed, a great big thank you to you and everyone involved for that. and to be lucky enough to be on stage when myself Sandy Holt and another person , Danced off the in the dance comp!( even though the best dancer in the world Andy Simpson ) was stood watching, What a feeling! looking out into the crowd, So many faces you couldnt see, The atmosphere, The heat, The smell, I stood there and I thought, thank you god I love you ! it was truely a stunningly wonderful moment in our young and developing lives, Thank you PCJF

julie allen ex stourport, b'ham now australia

hangin on stage with martin ellis and dave evison and taping all the sounds on my dodgy cassette recorder and even interviewing the exciters on it! Dancin, talkin, buyin and selling sounds. dancin and talkin , smiling alot. clappimg in unison and clapping in appreciation after a favourite sound had been played. Genuine souls all around. Being happy. most radical memory was on a really busy nite..breaking through from the beachcomber with about 20 others climbing through narrow passageways and holes to end up coming out in the casino by removing a panel underneath the stage bringing us out right onto the dance floor, putting our bags down and dancing as if nothing had happened...amazing how we made it in the dark...we just followed the pulsating beat!!!!!!!!! Never even thought about wigan ever ending, only had good thoughts. so sad when it did...a beautiful dream ended. So blessed to have been right in the heart of it all from the nite it opened. It was my life, I even worked in the music industry with r searling at RCA. made me cry reading all the comments on this site... Keep the faith forever.RIGHT ON..have a dance or 50 for me on the anniversary...

only made it to wigan a few times just before it closed but the thrill of being part of it rushes back every time you listen to the music. cant wait for king georges on 27 sept, allways a great night but this one should be special.

Some of the best nights of my young life. if memory serves Russ, you used to do a spot at the Rugby Club as well. Recently married and we had a soul night for our evening reception. Went to the Octogon 2 days before we married and saw you in the bar playing some of the oldies. We're both middle age but feel that northern soul is part of both of us, and we vist the Monaco soul nights whenever we can. Looking forward to the 20th. Listen to your show every Saturday. Thanks Russ. You've brought the young magic back to us old newly-weds.

Greatest night ever seeing the immaculate Jackie Wilson live on stage. The Casino that night was awesome and an unforgetable experience.

Hay Eric, I woke up having a dream like that the other day. Maybe it was a nightmare, not really sure. It still feels like it was only a couple of weeks ago since I was last there.

The tickle in the stomach as I got up on Saturday. Trying to get a few hours kip at teatime. Going buying Dextrosol Glucose tablets and cans of coke to smuggle in. Sticking to the carpet round Mr M's balcony where drinks had been spilled. All the lads stunk of Brut and the girls of Tabu perfume. Having a pie to eat one night in there, and 20 minutes later, bringing the damn thing back up again, with gastric acid coming out of my ears ! Passing a can ok coke round, sharing it with about 15 people. Waking up, 27 years later, and dreaming that Im back in there, on the dancefloor. And realising that the Council could have let us keep that wonderful club open for at least another 20 years. Ive never, ever missed anything, or anybody as much as Wigan. If I won the lottery, Id get hold of the original plans, buy a large patch of land in Wigan, and re-build it, just the way it was......Yes, even with toilets with no locks on the doors that wouldnt flush.

Working on a sat on Bolton market, just to make some money for the casino, it was one night i would never miss. What an experience, one that i will never forget. Northern soul is still a big part of my life, just as it was in 77

Boyfriend wouldn't let me go VaVa's but I managed to catch bus, train or cadge a lift to Wigan!...yeah, finished with him hahahaLoved the whole experience, queing, getting squashed! Dancing, smelly overcrowded loos, Mr M's, being chasd by drug squad...Beachcomber, baths...if I had to say fave bit, then it has to be the music..and still is..monthly or fortnightly get to northern nights, clean and sober tho! Hi to Stu buthcter (Ulverston) Remember Penny Farthing in Barrow! Brill memories..Keep The Faith

LEO FINN (BLACKBURN)

My fav memory isn't a one off kind of thing it,s really a memory of the every week event that was Wigan Casino.I guess you could call it a memory of a feeling-a feeling that began on a Friday afternoon after finishing work and that reached a crescendo half way down the hill from Wigan Wallgate on Saturday night. What a buzz.I wouldn't settle down to normal life until Tuesday of the following week then come Friday-off again.I don't suppose it was any different for anyone who went to the Casino at that time.Never mind The Beatles or "The Space Race" the Wigan Casino period was a time in a life not to be missed.I'm glad I was there.finally on a sad note,"Dance Brittania" showed a full screen close up of a young Tony Cox from Rufford/Ormskirk bustling his way into the Casino with his bag in hand.I believe Tony has passed on now but for me that,s a one off memory as we were good mates for many years until we lost touch.

Alan Bratt, Perth, Western Australia

The first time I went to The Casino (to an Oldies allnighter in 1975)the heat, the smell of Brut & talc, and the instant atmosphere, and then the last "PROPER" allnighter in Sept.1981 (The 3 before 8), and not being able to get off the dance floor...and so many more fantastic memories - thanks Russ.

Karen (Wigan)

No-one can replace the Casino but Its about time Wigan authorities listened to the people of Wigan and surrounding areas and build a dancehall for all dancers and styles. make Wigan the best place to be AGAIN

diane leigh

I'm a teenager, but my mum went to Wigan Casino, she tells me all about it, I wish I could have been there. I love Northern Soul and Motown and this photos are fantastic. You don't get clubs like Wigan Casino these days.

Geoff (Houston Texas)

Picture 6 is the sadest thing I've ever seen. How about posting some new ones from the fire Russ, I'd like that. Wigan Casino haunts my thought constantly, guess it allways will. I remember the first time. Driving to Wigan not having a clue where in Wigan the Casino was located. Something must have been guiding me because we went round a roundabout, turned up a dark deserted road and was confronted by hundreds of people blocking off the street. Scared the hell out of me. Does anyone know why the place and the music was and still is so powerful in shaping peoples lives?

Nancy Dixon

I can't even begin to explain why some 30 years later I still get excited thinking about Wigan, no matter how hard I tried to keep my hair dry, within seconds of hitting the dance floor it was wet through. I used to hate it when going up the stairs about 5.00 it was getting light because I never wanted the night to end. The feeling of getting in was brilliant especially after you had been pushed up against the doors and your feet didn't even touch the ground. The ladies loos were the worst in the world though, tiny and stinky and sweaty! I want to go back there again..........

IAN WILLS

HI THIS PHOTO WAS TOOK AFTER THE EARLY SESSION ON A FRIDAY NIGHT THE GUYS IN THE PICTURE ARE BRIAN RAE, STUART BRECKENRIDGE,IAN WILLS,DAVE EVISON ALL CASINO DJ,S AND A GUY CALLED MARK FROM PRESTON WHAT GREAT MEMORIES.

sandi

wow l dont remember the casino`s main dance hall looking this grand, lovely picture thou.got too many great memories to actually pin down 1 specific memory, the atmosphere, music played mostly on a chronic sound system, chewing gum on the floor, condensation/nicotine marks on your clothes next mornig, the crowd and the friends l made are all part of happy memories for me. If l have to pick 1 memory that still gets me tittering is the time Poma had his hair dyed this post box red crazy colour(non permenent),and came dressed in red shoes and yellow trousers, he looked like a swan vesta, anyone who knew Poma will know how he used to sweat, so next mornig after the night before, he emerges into the daylight looking a rite ode sight, his hair dye had run all down his neck and face and his T-shirt had a bright red collar , funny that was. think after that he stuck to nateral.

Jonah

The first time I danced there, I was absolutely petrified...seeing some of the fantastic dancers !!!!

i moved to wigan a few years ago and was working in a pub were i met harry green, only wish i could have chated longer with him he was a renound guy around yhe wigan area and always had a story to tell god bless him rip harry.

Cockney johnny.

I moved from Surrey in 1971 up to Mansfield in Nottingham where Northern Soul is a religion and is still belting away as strong as ever. The Casino was paradise for those who wanted to bop and slip discs during dodgy back drops all night and when we came out it was a fresh bowling shirt and off to Blackpool Mecca all dayer.I got to the Torch, Cleethorpes pier,Nottingham Palais all dayer, Samanthas in Sheffield and countless one nighters. I was so fit i could do the London Marathon easy in those great days .Mansfield stillhosts weekly Northern gigs and i hope it goes on for years to come .p.s.I still have my bag that i used for Wigan etc. still covered in the old badges. Take care all.

Louise Jackson Newcastle

If only we could return for one more unbeatable Nighter. It was all about the people, the music and the dancing.Wigan Revisited last August captured much of the atmosphere. Please put on another one Russ.

Sam Hall (Portsmouth)

You are so right Mark! The worst thing you could do on a stuffy summer night was go outside for a breather. When you walked back in it was like an oven......but a very friendly oven!

Mark SCOUSE

Waliking up the stairs after seeing Ma`s happy face on the till and harry the doorman and hearing the music muffled then as you open the doors and the atmosphere hit youlike a smack in the face the music the heat the buzz. DO YOU REMEMBER THAT? I WILL ALWAYS until i hang up my dance shoes. Mark B

Julian Rourke (Nee Haydock)

Hi Russ. Living in Chorley it was a 20-minute bus ride to the Casino. Best memories are Martha Reeves' reaction to getting slow-clapped in '79, surveying the scene from the Main Room balcony at the 6th Anniversary, while Better Use Your Head made my hair stand on end, buying my first pair of Spencers (which I still own - just wish they fitted me!), and a wednesday night midweek session in 1980 when Hi-Tension were on stage. You played the Police - 'Can't stand Losing You' and I had the floor to myself. Also the final Nighter when we all staged a protest sit-in at eight-fifteen, then left at eight-thirty with tears streaming down our faces. Happy times!

Neil Watson Blackpool

Good Dancing Music from DJ's who knew what to play to keep the floor going.

alan martindale chorley

unique...even (I think it was)the Tempations were amazed by it all, as their massive suited frames slinked along the balcony at the allnighter. Me, Ped and Ste L were in dreamland. Thanks!

Russ Winstanley Wigan

Hi Andy,we initially opened the Beachcomber when we only started at around 2am to get the crowds off Station Road.DJs were Alan Cain and Bri Rigby who moved to Mr Ms with the late Kenny Spencer.Lynne and Chris also served breakfasts til the Baths were discovered nearby! It stopped when we opened at 12.Lofty, the signing in book disappeared after a few months when the Police insisted everyone had to fill in an official application form and generally be a member 48 hrs prior to visiting.Steve, used to love working at Barrow's Penny Farthing club

kim in lytham

enjoyed saturdays travelling from burnley looking at the pictures brings back the good memories at the casino

Andy Felts; Bedford

I agree with Steve from barrow, trouble is nothing was ever as good again we were all spoilt!! Does any one remember the beachcomber where we all gathered before getting in, that was stopped for some reason. Great music, great people and no agro thats what pulled us all some 200 miles north almost every weekend. Thanks to the North.

steve bennett .barrow

The photos reminded me of all the wonderful people I met and great music I danced to in the mid seventies. The memories will stay with me for ever. The Casino started my love of Soul music.Incredible.

Chris Walford in Glasgow

After some difficult trips by car to Wigan,we regularly organised coaches from Scotland on a monthly basis.Set off Saturday tea-time and got back Sunday lunch absolutely shattered!Loved it when Russ appeared in Edinburgh,Aberdeen and Dundee. He always packed the place.Going to the Casino was the best 6 years of my life and I'm still on the Scene.Brilliant music and friends.Superb Show.

Jim Davies from Croston

Tried most of the famous venues in the North including the Highland Room,Morecambe Pier and Carlton and Stoke's Torch but none of them was a patch on the Casino. More discoveries and much busier than anywhere else and also ran 4 nights a week.Unbeatable and Russ kept it true to the proper Northern Soul Sound.

Tom and Judith in South Africa

Really wish we had a time machine and could re-visit the wonderful Casino. The dancing, atmosphere, smell and heat.So many life-long friendships made and still kept. Thanks for starting it all Russ.So many people owe you so much for eight soulful years.Have a great Christmas and New Year.

Yvonne in Clitheroe

Used to tell my Mum I was staying at a mates house so that I could stay out all night!Brilliant music, memories and friends.Still go to a lot of the local soul nights but the Casino really was the BEST !Cried at the last night and never thought I'd get over it.Love the show.

peter from southport

I had to lie to Mrs Woods on the main desk about my age when applying for my first memmbership in 1976,it was just before my 14th birthday to see Gloria Jones.only missed 2or3 niters after that.Casino all night Saturday...The Ritz all day Sunday...phew..the balcony in Mr M's was the top dormitory.Remember that you girls from Bangor ?

Tony and Pam Salford

Used to travel on the train from Manchester and get off at Ince because they wouldn't check if you had a ticket!Spent a wonderful youth at the Heart of Soul where we first met.Still have most of our record collection and the same wonderful friends.Love the programme.Much better than any of the other stations.

First went to an Alldayer in Darwen then Burnley Cat's Whiskers where my favourite DJs were Russ and Ginger. Finally made it to the Casino and, wow,it was in a league of it's own.All the DJs played to the Dancers who had a big input into the success of a New Spin.Great dance floor,DJs and music.Always be the No.1 Please play The Poppies from 1974.Thanks Dawn and Martin.

Alex and Mick in Australia

Just re-living lots of brilliant nights at the Casino.Been to clubs everywhere since but none have ever had such an unbeatable atmosphere and top music. Also loved the oldies room Mr.Ms.Got a great Northern Scene now in Australia. You should come and visit Russ. Thanks for playing our request.

Sharron from Lytham

many nights spent dancing on the "practice floor" upstairs on M's balcony and like everyone else the baths in the morning.Still going out with most of the people I knew back then and still enjoying the best music in the world

Terry Ashton from Dublin

Remember seeing Tommy Hunt,Edwin,Jnr.Walker,Betty Wright and Elgins live at the Heart of Soul.Wonderful days but luckily we've got the memories, love of the music, soul nights to go to and all the friends we made and still have.P.S.Love the show

Alan Chapman Garstang

The pictures help to bring back those brilliant times of my youth.Being a Casino regular started my passion with the brilliant music that I've kept throughout my life. The only low spot was my divorce...I lost a treasured and wonderful record collection

Alison from Clitheroe

Never realised what an impact the Casino and Northern Soul music would have on me until 25 years later.I can still dance to the records I love with friends I first met in Wigan and attend lots of Soul Nights.Great pictures and Russ' Show is the highlight of the week

So yes, to hear that Russ Winstanley was paid £50 for a DJ'ing stint at the Casino tells me that he was well paid for 1976

He charges £250 now and brings cd's and boots! So still doing oK. I guess people pay for the charisma and to hear those OH so interesting stories...again and again and again...

If everyone that dislikes the "Nostalgia Nazi's" are anti-Casino, then it's funny, but you never hear a bad word about Richard do you?

Could that be because he has respect?

Is not a sell-out trading on the past?

Has moved on?

Or maybe because, unlike Russ, he aint a Tw*t!

Well, guess whos showing his ignorance. Russ broke f--k all, except when he slipped walking across the dance floor. Ever heard of Richard Searling my historian friend  RW opened the place, thats his claim to fame..in fact, hes never really been into the music, got the same box of tunes (only now most are bootlegs) now as he had then. So, reserve your naff and miscalculated jibe for those who NEVER went...I did. I think your being influenced by your avatar into thinking you know about Wigan? :D

I'm starting to wonder if you actually went yourself Paul with that ridiculous statement. Winstanley broke as many new records as Searling or anyone else at the Casino. And I'm totally unbiased as to this thread but you can't go around rewriting history just because you don't rate the bloke.

im not being ignorant at all....you defended your friends on here and im defending Russ

ive openly admitted i only went wigan a few times and have never tried to rewrite history but have only commented on my experience of collecting live Wigan tapes from oct 73 to the end of an era and also reading every literature about the place...record lists from the time ...20+ years of study ...talking to people..etc

im under no illusion that Wigan was the b and end but it remains a fascinating subject borne by the fact everyone is still talking about it today. and its always fascinated me.

i may not have gone wigan from day 1 but i DO know who played what there and when they played it and in my opinion based on the facts that ive got that Russ has played his part in the success of the Casino ,as did ALL the djs,and all the punters and im only too aware of Richard Searling and have many of his tapes and playlists ..there are good bad and great records the Casino played them all.

im glad you attended the casino when you did,im envious of all who went but im glad i did go and tasted what the casino was like and set me up for the next 27 years on the scene (non stop by the way)...

btw my avatar is just a laugh and not supposed to be serious but take it how you want to cause i dont give a shit!

Who is on the avatar Mark?

hangin on stage with martin ellis and dave evison and taping all the sounds on my dodgy cassette recorder and even interviewing the exciters on it!

CASINO CLUB i will never ever forget you!! sleep tight

Rebecca

Jonah

The first time I danced there, I was absolutely petrified...seeing some of the fantastic dancers !!!!

tim williams

The 'Heart of Soul'can never be emulated.Luckily we were in the right place at the right time.A totally atmospheric and magical venue.A massive thanks to Russ,Mike Walker,Gerry Marshall and the enthusiastic Soul Jocks who made it happen.See you at the Casino's 35th Anniversary in Wigan.

My favourite memory was at Christmas 79-80 I think and,I`m Just A Love Machine - By The Miracles, and there were Three Lines of Four Stompers dancing to this..this was my favourite thought I remember about Wigan Casino !

ade

i moved to wigan a few years ago and was working in a pub were i met harry green, only wish i could have chated longer with him he was a renound guy around yhe wigan area and always had a story to tell god bless him rip harry.

Please put on another one Russ.

hazel

i now live in Bulgaria but my heart is still with northern its the love of my life it brings me alive even now all these years later xxx

alan entwistle

the very best times of my life keep the faith

Thanks to the North.

steve bennett .barrow

all i want 2 say best years of my life

Lofty///Preston

Hi do you know who has the signing in book from the first night?Would love to find out my nr.Peter

Debbie Fowler Accrington

Used to travel on the train from Manchester and get off at Ince because they wouldn't check if you had a ticket!Spent a wonderful youth at the Heart of Soul where we first met.Still have most of our record collection and the same wonderful friends.Love the programme.Much better than any of the other stations.

ian ,blackbur

i n picture five sat on stage,great days,from wheel,torch,wigan and today,ktf

brian from oldham

oldham cats whiskers till 12then onto wigan casino the weekends were to short what a night neverforget

Luckily didn't have too far to travel with my mates yo the Mecca and Casino.Your photographs brought all those great days back.Brilliant to have had the best ever Northern Soul venues on our doorstep.Still love the music and visit the local nights. Now a major part of my life.

Dawn from Darwen

This says it all for me. Pure nostalgia and nothing else. These are reasons i wont attend things like this, not reasons to make me attend.

I KNOW OF TWO PEOPLE FROM WIGAN THAT WENT LAST YEAR AND THOUGHT IT WAS SO 'OUT-OF-JOINT WITH REALITY THEY ARE TRAVELLING THE 120 DOWN TO THE PEG AT SKEGG ON THE 20TH TO HAVE SOME NORTHERN AND RARE SOUL SERVED UP AS IT SHOULD BE, OFF A PLATTER OF VINYL IN A VENUE FULL OF ATMOSPHERE NOT A SHOPPING TROLLEY FULL OF FADED MEMORIES...... JUST SAYING

:wicked:

What was wigan casino like ? are there any tv clips

I'm starting to wonder if you actually went yourself Paul with that ridiculous statement. Winstanley broke as many new records as Searling or anyone else at the Casino. And I'm totally unbiased as to this thread but you can't go around rewriting history just because you don't rate the bloke.

Yeah but when it comes to the good ones Pete...... laugh.gif

From what I read about the early years a lot of instrumentals etc. made up the playlists, with supplies coming direct from Russ's uncle in Ft Lauderdale (Simon Soussan :wicked: ) But I didn't go then so cannot comment.

Then a couple of better years. When I first went circa 76/7 he was playing some good things like larry hale Once, Eddie Spencer, Sammy Lee, Yvonne Baker, Willie Hutch "Love games", Lovelites etc. But laced in with poppy things like Dusk, and later Expressions "Round and round in bloody circles" etc. But some good sets. But am sure some of those probably got broken at Mecca and I bet he doesn't play those better ones in his shopping mall sets.

1977 Stemmons Express and Isaac Hayes "Disco connection" and then whoosh - Helen Shapiro, Joe 90, Barry St John, Muriel Day, 3 x Bobby Goldsboro records, Peggy March, jackie Trent, The seeds, the dreaded "Love Hustle"......in fact from then onwards name me a good record he broke (and don't say Prince Buster). Go on I am sure there is one in that post 77 period

If you think were a bit crazy have a look at this write up about a place called the Ace Cafe in London, 12,000 turning up for a motorbike meeting that was then a tyre fitting car park which was formaly an old cafe, that rockers hung out at

Some people like to move on but many like to meet old faces at a location that means a lot to them ,theres no right or wrong just what you fancy

The Ace Cafe Reunion is the brainchild of Mark Wilsmore. In 1993 he shared his ideas for an annual event to mark the closure of the original Ace Cafe, a book and film, documenting the history of the Ace Cafe and endeavouring to ensure that the original Ace Cafe re-opened, with relevant products being available.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the cafe's closure, Mark, with friends, formed the organising team for the Reunion and arranged for motorcycle runs to converge at the former Ace Cafe site on Sunday 4th September 1994.

nowace.jpg

The idea was well received by motorcycling organisations and clubs. Media support was sought and the event turned into a major free motorcycle and Rock ´n´ Roll event.

It was estimated that over 12000 people gathered at the old cafe site. The event spread from the Ace site, along the North Circular Road, to the Abbey Public House. This was one of the largest motorcycle gatherings in the country that year and received unparalleled media coverage. A film was made, entitled " An Ace Day", the official Ace Cafe Reunion video. With its Rock ´n´ Roll soundtrack it has received worldwide critical acclaim.

I find it quite funny that the two people Russ and Kev tend to get slated as money grabbing buggers whilst the events that they put on are run to a proffesional standard which does cost extra money, at there events they have badged stewards which as you can imagine are pretty expensive.Russ will need between 10 and 20 depending how many turn up

I have been to loads of smaller dos and most of these do not have any form of stewarding, this would save them approx £150 which can be reflected in the price of admission, whilst i would agree that its not normally necasary, I have had to break up one fight.

at all these events by the letter of the law they are actually being run illegaly and the police could prosecute the promotors, if anyone was badly injured in a fight or fire it would be most interesting if they were actually insured.

To do it right does cost a bit extra same as going to see the mighty Posh now days (what a game) so lets give them the credit they deserve

:rolleyes::thumbup:

If RW is doing it right, how do you explain the complaints about last years effort on this linked thread?

https://www.soul-source.co.uk/Wigan-C...shopping+centre

I'll ask you again: As Rus's mouthpiece, why did you never go on that thread to answer the many complaints? You could do it now perhaps. If you like, I'll start a new thread in Lookbacks linking to it, then it can be at the top of the list again for easier reference.

PS. If you're struggling a bit, remember you haven't played the "charity" card yet.

Must admit we don't really see fights in soul venues these days Stef - we've all aged a bit - the nearest thing is a hissy fit over the microphone or a bootleg flying across the dancefloor like a frisbee  And stewards? - what are they for - to direct you to Woolworth's, or the toilets on the next floor up?. Would have thought they'd be more use to the shopping centre to be candid. From what I recall weren't some of them a bit rough and tumble with the punters last year? I seem to remember some complaints.

I don't see what "doing it right" in this context has to do with the credibility of this event. The better promotors do have Liability insurance or the venues they hire have it - they have to.

Sorry mate this argument holds no water at all, I recorded tapes of Searling playing Bobby Goldsboro, Chapter Five, John Gary, I have other tapes of him playing Gary Lewis and the Playboys...
