you seem to be obsessed about bags vests badges etc, why don't you just go and buy some you know you want to, don't deny your true feelings :)

broken record comes to mind

and why don't you get out more

Now if you wanted to put something of benefit on here Stef you could give us a nudge about the old Modern Soul Nights we ran at Papa Luigis in the 80s. Top nights theye were too. Can't remember seeing you then

was chatting to max rees about these nights the other week, as a few old faces came to Evolution @ St Ivo in april this year.... like Bob Mann , think i lent Max my Bobby Thurston LP to play at one of these night.... great nights and free pizza ! ;-)

Yeah but did Stef cook the Pizza? Stef?

Sam was only on from 79/ 1980. He was then sacked by WInstanley for playing "Casanova" by Coffee I think, but I would need to check Sam's letters from the time to confirm why.

sam got sacked, as i rember that night a petion was starded by the stoke lot they came up to me and harpo we told em to f off we wernt signing it! they didnt like him playing his new modern

I remember the banner being dropped from the balcony when Sam came on with "F*ck the funk" on it. On the stage, he of course was oblivious to it all

You must have been in Viva La rock, that was about the time we put the first delivery vehicle on the roof for a bit of publicity

I have been told I make the best pizzas in the world

and as long as I keep giving my son his favourite sweets the praise just keeps coming

We did promote richard searling at the Grove in about 81 but only a 100 turned up and can see why he`s only 4p on google, I always said I should have booked Russ

We also booked Colin Curtis, over 200 turned up but he played jazz funk (modern to you guys)all night and got this penny whistle out and did a Chris Hill thing.

Going back to my Tony blackburn thing, Chris Hill was going out for a grand then as well so relatively Russ wasnt money grabbing on his 50s at Wigan.

dont forget St Ives Annivesary coming up soon ,now that place was discovered by a Glen Miller fan and he is considered a god around these parts

Back to Wigan .Steve tells me another 50 tickets sold today

the wirrina was rubbish......tommy bush however has stood the test of time and is a class tune

We had two Wirrinas , the gym that used to rain sweat off the girders making the floor like a volleyball court in need of the guys with the mops

and the other was out beautiful ballroom that Paul and Dave put Limmie and Family Cookin on and she appeared on stage in see thru blouse, those were the days

yes sam was on every other week

He used to alternate with Gary Rushbrooke, who was very popular as a guy, as well as a DJ, which meant Sam was up against it.

Sam was only on from 79/ 1980. He was then sacked by WInstanley for playing "Casanova" by Coffee I think, but I would need to check Sam's letters from the time to confirm why.

I am not sure about that Steve, I dont think he played that there, he definitely played it when they had re-opened the Mecca shortly after as we went over to the Mecca then Wigan, but that was after Sam had been sacked so may have been the last year. I think it was due to the petition below and Russ at that time was already struggling to control Richard and Sam's move into other spheres with Modern stuff.

sam got sacked, as i rember that night a petion was starded by the stoke lot they came up to me and harpo we told em to f off we wernt signing it! they didnt like him playing his new modern

It was Gary's wife Julie that started it Tim and have to admit we all signed it about 23 times, partly because we were petrified of Julie and partly because Gary was really coming through as a great DJ. Bit bizarre as I certainly danced away to Richards modern, but to be honest I have always said at that time Sam had some dubious taste, especially with the horrendous She Devil which was probably more to do with this downfall.

As usual I qualify above with my memory is shot, so not sure it fits in as neatly as my brain thinks it does!! Also I remember hating Coffee when I heard it, thinking it was a pop record so think that was a frame of mind lots of people had about Sam's plays at that time, and we were all 16/17 so our opinions were probably swayed by the "big boys". I love the record now!

Great times though, but heres a secret for all those going along, it was 28 f*****g years ago, you aint the same, its a f*****g shopping centre, that is the antithesis of what it was all about, and RW is now the antichrist! Give it up, go and wear your fancy dress at a fancy dress do in your local night club, music will probably be not too dissimilar.

Okay off for my medication now, being dying to say something on here but have resisted so far, better than the hours of therapy I get on the NHS!

Another gin please barman.

I was there when he played Casanova Jocko - it was accepted by a number of the dancers even though it was Top 50.

Stuff like the petition to get Sam sacked all fascinating stuff - I will try and dig out Sam's letter on the subject to see what that says - it's so long ago, it's a bit hazy.

No one is questioning your talents at making Pizzas Stef (did you make them at our modern nights though - Simon M swears by them?), but to say Jazz Funk is modern shows a chasm of ignorance the size of the Grand Canyon.

Its likely your memories better than mine Steve so would believe you, lots of things went over my head then!

I just remember the Mecca night as that was even scarier than getting into Wigan, had to burn my tie in half (I had gone from work so it must have been a Friday) as they were saying ties only so I shared my tie with, I think, Keith Whitson. Lots got turned away because of being under 18, they all went to some dodgy strip bar round the corner while waiting on the bus coming back to take us to Wigan. All the way over on the bus the guys were moaning about Sam playing disco, hence why I think it was after he got sacked. It actually almost sounds surreal now just typing it, great days, but THEY ARE GONE, we are older and wiser now....... aren't we??

I think the top 50 thing was a main bone of contention was it not, although as you say there were a fair few following Sam's every record then, just Julie was more frightening!

Cheers

Jock

PS Am I forgiven for giving you a false, and nasty  , profession. Think it might have been me that started that rumour as was sure it had been mentioned back in Backbeat days, but again blame my dodgy memory. Apologies anyway

that was meant with a wink

Anyway thats not what Steve Jason thinks , he reckoned that he recognised tons of the tunes in the City Club Modern room and he never used to go to Northern do`s

On a personal note love it all Oldies ,Moderm R and B , still not so sure about Sams big play at St Ives, "The flasher" bad memories of that one, can see why Russ showed him the door.

mind you it did used to point out the divs by stopping near the end and then starting again, the faces used to look out for this to see who were the new kids they would stop dancing and then have to start again swiftish

I think a topic like this should be dealt slightly tongue in cheek with a smile on our faces

Having said that I do think some people on here have been a bit rough on Russ whilst they seem to big up St Richard, Russ is called money grabbing but Richard goes out for more money, Russ was supposed to be choosing poor quality tunes at Wigan yet Richard was choosing these great sounds ,Russ told me that he used to meet with all the jocks and create playlists simular to radio stations so dancers heard the same tunes in a night and if jocks went off at tangents it was goodbye.(soul sam)

Some could argue that Richard mainly works for the biggest baddy of them all , is he on door commision, lining his pockets? wink.gif does it eally matter

Personally I think there both great djays and they should both get the acclaim they deserve

and my personal favourite dj at Wigan was Dave Everson a dancing dj, flying off the stage to Love you baby, just brillaint, although I would say that Russ and Brian Rae both throw there arms around a bit now,

could anyone confirm that Brian used to wear stripy tank top, as when I mentioned this he denied it, before he put his next cd on

Some of the comments aimed at Russ are petty and venal in the extreme.

Im going to this because somehow I was instrumental in getting Russ in touch with the developers of the shopping centre by simply asking for a contact number on here and passing it along. I've been given free tickets to go along with the guy who supposedly come up with the idea of commemorating the site and broached it to Russ. This guy is a mate of my brother-in-law which is how I came to be involved.

OK, a shopping centre is not really my idea of a soul club but I think it would be rude to refuse and my sister would kill me if I didn't turn up. To be honest I've even got VIP tickets, which is a first for me, so perhaps it would be an even bigger insult to to turn them down.

As I hardly missed a Wigan from the beginning I think Im in a bit better position to judge Russ's contribution a little better than Paul S who by his own admission didn't get into NS until 1976 but I can assure anybody who wasn't there in the opening years that Russ was no worse than any other jock. In fact although hard to believe from the tripe that appears on here sometimes he was a "top" jock!! It was Russ and Richard;equals. The fact that Russ doesn't appear to know "This time" is neither here nor there. Back in '81 I had 10 of them and no dj wanted a copy and they all went at £5.

That's not denying that of course he fell behind in the later years but then so have a lot of other dj's for a variety of reasons.

So Im going and I'll probably have an enjoyable night or again my sister will have words with me and if the "holier than thou" brigade on here think Im a div then what do I care. I'd rather be there than travelling down to the rip-off capital of the UK anyway. Had to stay in London on the way to France couple of weeks back. Never again!!!

Euro-star. Twats!!!! I went by train to avoid flying and had to fly back!!! At my own expense!!!

The casino love it or hate it with the 'ole 'its a car park get over it' or the most recent 'its a shopping centre get over it' remarks, its still causing controvesy 35 years down the line, it definately had some bloody impact. Lifes too short if ya go enjoy it if ya don't enjoy what cha do. Kudos, The Sista xxxxx

Thanks Dawn support from member 231 is most appreciated, I promised Russ I would give the event a bit of a plug on here, compared to many things in life this really is a fun subject and as I say to my little lad after his bed time story, "the moral of that story is to forgive and forget" (even if it isnt) "tomorrow is a brand new day and we are gonna walk around with a smile on our faces" and that is what we aim to do

His favourite tune is the brothers, likes his instrumentals, he picks out the next record to play on the basis of a pretty label.

By the way any promotors out there, this gal aint a bad dj, and she`s a looker wink.gif

If you go back to the Wigan days I think the crowd dictated high energy stuff simply by the fact that they had energy to burn, remember the crowd going wild to Sea Cruise and it wasnt played by Russ,or Richard,This Time is a wonderful record but I cant remember it being played then and if it had, would it have been as popular as some of the commercial stuff, mind you would be nice to have 10 copies now.I Think we have to look at the more commercial stuff as our party tunes and still enjoy them.

look forward to seeing you there my friend and thank you for your comments

ps they have admitted we make good pizzas even if I was accused last year of bringing the scene into disripute by using the gimmick of free pizzas at the City Club :)wink.gif

Steve I reckon I would have made the pizzas for the Modern Nite at Paps, if they were nice it was defo me,

now you may think what generous chaps we were but we didnt have a full drinks license so drinks had to be ancillery to food, bearing in mind we were opp the cop shop ,walking a bit on thin ice especially when Viva La Rock was there, 200 people used to squeeze in, half in, half outside recovering from the heat, it took the cops two years to realise that 5 pizzas wasnt exactly a substantail meal

Well its countdown to what looks like to be the biggest event of the Northern soul calender

The Flirtations have already started putting on there make up, if you you check out their web site https://www.theflirtations.co.uk/biography.html either they are the youngest looking sixty year olds Ive ever seen or they have got the best photographer one could wish for

Russ is popping to the haidresser deciding whether to go for his bouffant style

Steve is getting some more black badges printed

And me, what to wear?

Popped to Burghly last week and bought a cracking shirt, The Latino Polo Club special, dont want to look to loud but also want to impress ,just heard the event will be available to watch on line via the security cameras at the cafe, so I need to stand out when I`m dancing should there be any more film directors looking for someone with fast feet and I also would like to promote the new sport I love(had invite after my Queens head pizza and never looked back) , check it out and give me your veiws dont want to overkill

https://www.joulesclothing.com/pages/produc...cookie%5Ftest=1

Wil be traveling down with "Dave Dedicated Soul Club" Reed, he was reminising how I introduced him to proper Northern when he travelled down to the 6th Anniversary on the coach that me and Mark Dracott ran in 79, Dave still has the bus ticket and entry ticket which Russ and Dean have signed, he has some other great memorabillia.

Funny story about that trip we ordered the tickets and collected the money off about 60 people, when we chased Wigan up they said ,sorry none left,we didnt know what to do but Marks dad was a solicitor so he got on the blower and threatened to take them to court, Wigan said as long as we get there early we would have the tickets for us.

Mark told the bus driver to step on the gas and there would be a tenner bonus which he did whilst bragging about the turbo on his new bus, unfortunately he got pulled over doing nearly a ton and had to go to court, we got our tickets and Mark recommended his dad as a solicitor and drummed up an extra job for the firm.

(Hey is was a good job the police didnt realise we had a few in the boot, mind you that would have been an even better job for Wyman and Abbott)

Mark is on the Wigan video wearing the Black rain coat pushing his way into the front entrance, God bless you my friend

Just a quick observation but with all this talk about comparisons between Russ & Richard and their sounds, new discoveries etc. I was under the impression that it was John Anderson who supplied many of Richards "discoveries" and I know this is common knowledge but haven't seen it mentioned in this thread (although I haven't read it all - yawn).
