Chris L Posted October 14, 2009 Share Posted October 14, 2009 With the Torch re-union now only days away, me and 3 of my buddies will be winging our way north-ish in comfort, staying at a hotel, able to afford a decent restaurant meal. Always wasn't like that, thinking back in '72 what I did for work and what kind of money I was earning, etc. In 1972 I was trainee estate agent, shock horror............. earning about £10 a week to supplement my vinyl thirst I worked in a pub nights if you have do an extra job that's not a bad one, my mates certainly thought so I was driving a very dodgy Ford Cortina MK I, the brakes once failed on the motorway coming up to the Torch, what an experience that was............... All my money went Martin Koppell in Canada, Record Corner Balham, Moondogs in fact anywhere (I think I still Martin a fiver ) no money for clothes or those type of luxuries Me leaving my house off to the Torch, what a dorky shirt, I think my mum must have made it out of old curtains or a table cloth. Aahh halcyon days, there was NOTHING quite like queing up to get in at the Torch I get shivers just thinking about it. See yers there. No tell us all WHERE WERE YOU IN 72 ?? I have heard Kopp is turning up on the 24th Chris , and wants his fiver back - with interest I was employed in the retail clothes trade in 1972 , and like you Chris , I was spending my wage on tunes and schlepping up and down this sceptered isle in 1972 visiting all manner of venues . My venue visiting reached a new height of enlightenment , when I first stepped through the doors of the venue we are celebrating on the 24th ...... By the end of the year Rick had progressed to The Torch, taken by Paul Adcock, I was a bit of a lightweight, by the time I'd got it sorted to go, it had shut So my Night Life did not commence until Sept '73. Iancsloft Posted October 15, 2009 Share Posted October 15, 2009 72 the year i left home ( thrown out after a little escapade relating to the Torch ) i was working has a machine setter for Turner & Newall regular visiter to Blackpools Highland Room & Tunstalls Torch ..Pay if i remember was around £12 but money in 72 went a long way .. I use to go out Friday nite and most times not get back until Sun dinner or Sun nite we always went to Leigh Casino Sun nite no matter what i had eyes like a grey Alien big big pupils after a weekend of SKF & RIKER he he but i never ever missed work on Monday mornin i worked with a great guy called Derek Fairhurst who took me under his wing from day #1 when i first started work in 69 every Mon morning he told me to get my head down in this massive mould we used for making flat belting for the mining indusrty he use to cover me up in loads of old fabric lying around and leave me there until dinner at 1-30pm what a guy !!! Every Sat we use to go to Manchester to the record shops Ralphs nr Victoria Station Hyme & Addison John Dalton St and the brill Global Records on Princess St plenty 45,s to go at !!!! Yip 72 was a great year brilliant memories of the Torch and the fabulous live acts that appeared my fav venue along with the Highland Room ! Also used to see loads of scooters bombing around the Potteries, always remember seeing dozens of scooters lined up outside the Cinebowl in Broad Street Hanley, which later became the Steam Machine. I can remember all the older lads at Moorside Youth Club in Stoke on about the Torch closing & some place in Wigan called the Casino stopping open all night!!!! See ya all at the Torch Reunion. I was going to the Mecca (Blackpool) in 72, but did not go to the Pendulum untill 73. I can't remember when I 1st went to Blue Room in Sale, but only payed half on bus from Piccadilly. Attended my first allnighter in '74. Took a few short breaks from the scene but you know..once this stuff is in your blood it never leaves you and you always come back. Gilly Posted October 17, 2009 Share Posted October 17, 2009 In 72 i was 15 i had been asked to leave school (ours was the last year of choice as to staying on into the 5th year or bailing out at the end of the 4th year) can't remember the word the head used on my departure.Got myself an apprentace job as a motor mechanic,had been listing to soul music since i was 12 in and around Burton/Derby.still not happy that my mum had'nt let me go to the Torch and as much as i would love to go to this reunion i did'nt think it right to attend having not gone 1st time round. Yes i did, when we were all very young skinheads he was seen as someone to look up to and respect, for a start he was older than me, he drove a tasty mini and when it came to fighting (usually grebos) Ged would be straight in swinging his well polished ox blood docs.Istill remember where he lived with his parents, down that hill in Midway on the way to Repton bottoms as we knew it. Some of the blokes I knew where quite violent but also quite kind/friendly in their own way. Wonder where they are now ?.................... Steve He he...Dennis Lee was telling me some hair raising stories in that vein on Friday night...just as well I was only in it for the music!! ...Back on topic and back in 72 I was avidly reading all about the Torch but DJing locally so hadn't started travelling - that came about at the end of the Torch but at least it meant that I saw Sam and Dave and the Detroit Emeralds, had a whale of a time and got even more hooked on Northern Soul!
