It's a rare record I think. Had it twice over 20 years and sold most recently for approx £300 as I recall but it's worth more in terms of rarity IMO

cheers

My gut instinct is that these were 2 different singers sharing the same name.

But you may be interested in the info below.

I recall that in the early/mid-60's the French Richard Anthony regularly cropped up in the British music/pop papers - mainly because he was eye-candy for the girls.

He did have a couple of minor entries in the British charts in 1963 and 1964 but most of his releases were in the French language.

This is confirned by his entry on French Wikipedia. (not sure where those youthful good looks went!)

But only a couple of weeks ago I spotted his name and did a double take. It was an article in Billboard from 1965 about setting up the Tamla Motown label in France. At the end of the article it said "Berry Gordy also announced that Tamla-Motown had signed French singer Richard Anthony."

You can read it here if you go to Page 14.

Does anyone know if this actually happened and were there any RA releases on French Tamla Motown? Seems weird!!

The french singer Richard Anthony (i.e. not the guy on the Virtue 45) had a few releases on french Tamla-Motown and on german as well I think. He also had at least one release on US Motown, one of the sub-labels I think. Many many moons ago I had a few Richard Anthony tracks on a tape, I recall them all being pop apart from one good stomper, or am I wrong?

That's excellent. I was hoping Billboard hadn't got it wrong. I don't have a full discography of French Tamla Motown - I would like to get one some time.

And you are dead right:

VIP 25022 - Richard Anthony - I Don't Know What To Do. Released August 1965

I just listened to it on Spotify. Typical European "easy listening/beat crossover" sort of sound with the echo tweaked up a bit.

No wonder it never jumped out at me before.

The Virtue guy also recorded for Swan...'No Good' / 'The Boston Monkey', of which NG was Pat Brady's old 'Detroit Wheels' c/up at the tail-end of the Casino days. Collectors beware that the WDs of this one do not feature NG, more's the pity. Must admit I didn't keep my copy of the Virtue disc for long and traded it away to Gerhard in Frankfurt...he may still have it?

I'll leave it to the US members to pin-point his accent down as to where in the States he may be from!

A few years back I found a site with Richard Anthony on it (I can't remember if it was his site). It had an address to send him comments to, so I wrote to him and mentioned that his song "No good" was still packing certain dancefloors in the UK. To my amazement he wrote back and said that was great and thanks for letting him know and mentioned that he was still playing, I can't remember where though. He also said he used to jam with Hendrix back in the 60's. Also while scouring the net I found out that Patti from the Lovelites is now working at a Chicago bus company. Though I can't vouch for that, I can't even remember how I found these things, just messing around on the net in the wee hours of the morning. I had a bit of a Chat with Ronn Matlock too, talking about Eddie Kendricks & Posse. He sent me a Christmas card a few years ago. Nice chap. Cheers. Pete.G

Yes it's him, I recognise his voice. He was young and fresh, then.

His appetite (for singing ?) has never stopped.

For reference:

That Swan label scan showing above is fake made up one, and the Virtue label copy I had was more purple than red...does anyone have a red one?!

hatsoff2.gif

Think it's the scan Dave, mine is deep red/burgundy.

There was one the bay last week, which didn't sell and the dealer wanted in the region of $600 for it.

Big apologies - but it's back to the French Richard Anthony again.

Couldn't resist it!

What ARE those "twisters" doing to the soles of their shoes??!!

Hi,

I met one time French Richard Anthony's son, and he confirmed his father recorded few tracks in Motown Studios in 1965.

Apparently, only one record came out on VIP label ("I don't know what to do / what now my love").

This record came out in France as a single on the COLUMBIA label with different B side ("You've lost that lovin' feelin"), and I never saw picture sleeve (juke box copies probably).

There's no French Tamla Motown record with Richard Anthony (luckily!)

Cheers

Romain

Hi Salvo, I didn't see any picture of him on the site, just an article I think, like I said it was a long while ago. I wish I could tell you more. To my ears the guy singing "No Good" sounded like a white guy though. Cheers. Pete.

Without going digging can't remember what shade of red my copy is, pretty sure I included a picture of it in the Stafford Top Of The World CD that goldmine put out years back ? Like somebody already said it's a perfect example of rarer than the usual price would lead you to believe imho.

One story had him pegged as Richard Barrett, one time lead singer of ? Valentines ? better known as talent finding/handling of people like 3 Degrees, Frankie Lymon, etc. or was the link that Richard Barrett was plugging his career only, hmm ?

I fully understand the thread starter on this though - It was the enthusiastic response to first time hearing tunes of this ilk that kept me banging the Stafford drum, trying to get folk to look beyond the likes of well known Tommie Navarro, etc during the quiet years... I'd like to think there a fair few more goodies for folk to get to know/get reacquainted with from TOTW time.

  • 9 years later...

I am new to this site and am doing some research on Richard as I just got his LP this morning (£1 charity shop)

I always thought he was Canadian (which would explain the French Connection, but I was wrong (again)), but will update soon I wonder think is the same guy on the second track

Did anyone play this track which is on the LP

This is the back sleeve explaining who he is

Here is great link about the Motown session and scans of Amy Virtue and Swan

https://motownjunkies.co.uk/2013/06/14/623/

I also found this on the inter web ?

When I spotted Robert Thibdoeaux...... I thought French Connection 😀, but of course he was US not French !!!

Both the Amy sides are ballads no clips but I have found this (similar)
