Unacceptable Allnighters

The mental tick list of wants

If this thread turns into a personal attack on promoters then please delete

I thought it important to write that top bit because some times these things get highly charged and I want to keep the thread aimed fairly and squarely at the punters rather than give a platform to the venue organizers who may be tempted to get into the "Mines better than yours", sorry if that sounds crass.

Right to the point then.....................

I personally no longer pay much attention to flyers, I'm more often than not disappointed with what I expect and what's actually on offer that I now days rely totally on word of mouth, there is a down side to this of course and that is for new venues.

I think I must clarify that I am talking about the allnighters rather than the soul nights, I think there are different facets to both and I want to concentrate firstly on the Nighters.

An old pal of mine used to bang on that "It's only a night out", this is quite true, I don't take things too seriously, never personally but I am aware of the effort and investment needed to do a Nighter that may be some distance away so I am expecting, no demanding a few things.

Here is my tick list..........

Right from the off I want a full Nighter, I am not going to travel for one of those "Mini Allnighters" and I want the do to finish as near to 0800hrs as possible, I draw the line at 0600hrs but I don't like it.

The venue has to have a dance floor that's danceable, not an assault course full of obstacles such as holes, loose flooring and anything else that seams designed to dump me on my bum, I can do that my self!

Talc, I have no intention what so ever in visiting a venue that doesn't allow talc, you can tell me that the roof is low, there is humidity and for my safety I can't use talc, I never missed a Canklow in Rotherham and there the floor was like a ice rink, I want to make the choice, not you!

CD's, if you are playing anything other than a new release or some thing unavailable on wax then tell me before I travel, I aint coming to pay for silver shiny things unless the venue is well advertised or it's a charity event and the play policy is published in advance.

Alcohol, I have no problems with sensible drinkers but I don't want young kids spilling their drinks on the dance floor nor do I want the "Did you call my pint a puff" brigade.

Security staff, I know my bag is going to be searched, I know you are doing a thankless job but I want to be treated like a gentleman and I will treat you like a gentleman, unless of course you are massive ten you can treat me what ever the way you feel but please don't hurt me!

A sensible, inspiring (I know I am going to get it for this) DJ line up, I want to see some unknowns but if I am paying premiere money I want the premiere league and not Uncle Bill with his box of records.

Punters, I suppose I want my comfort zone and I want to see some faces I recognise to assure me that my choice has been the right one as far as venue is concerned? Yup I know that the further I stray from the cradle of The M62 the less well known faces I will see and I may even meet one of those cockney types?

Music, I have no problem with oldies and I have no problem with new spins, I have no problem with RnB and I have no problem with Modern, I love Soul! I do how ever want a bit of imagination from the DJ, I don't want to stare at an empty dance floor all night yet I know that a new sound may thin the dancers, I will be there making my own mind up and if there is a good crowd they will usually give some thing new or seldom played, a decent chance. I want to celebrate along with the DJ and allow them to point the way rather than nudge me along.

I know the music is a very personal thing so lets not get ambushed with this, there are other threads and I am fearful of this getting high jacked.

The wow factor, I want to go or meet up with the friends I have made and drive home thinking that I will return.

I think that's my wish list?

What's yours?

I wish every allnighter was cancelled for the rest of 2010.

At least that would put a stop to all the moans, groans and 'wish lists' type threads that have been dominating this site for the last week or so.

Fcukin' sad state of affairs if you ask me......... :)

As long as the Northern Soul Allnighters don't get cancelled. What's wrong in looking for the type of venue and music that suits your particular taste??.I'm still looking for my ideal venue although I found what I liked at Marton Manor in Middlesborough.Good crowd, friendly promoter, cheap drink (no broken glasses/spilt drink),deejays who were deejays and know how to programme music, hardly any talc (thank god...some of the people I have seen put talc down aint Wayne Sleep or Olga Corbett).I'm looking for somewhere else similar maybe closer. I'm not asking or much in music either. The basic Northern soul template ie late sixties and seventies with a smattering of newies in there in the same style to keep it progressing.I have loads of nights near me that advertise rare soul ie popcorn, midtempo,r&b but I will travel to hear the stuff I want to hear. It's not moaning and groaning. It's not just oldies either. It seems you get placed in the baggies oldies camp if you want to go out and hear sixties/seventies uptempo northern....with similar newies in there as well.I don't want to travel miles for a soul night when they are on my doorstep but I will travel for a good northern soul night/niter with good facilities/cheap bar and friendly people. BTW thanks to the people who replied on my last thread.I got some pointers.I was on the verge of posting up my playbox to emphasise what I was trying to get over but the thread was closed.I nearly got to the Barhouse in Chelmsford last night but the Gravesend ferry stopped at 7.30 so had to sack it.I will have to check out the Rochester gig as I'm there every second saturday. As I said promoters who went out their way to fire me friendly PM's and were honest about what the music policy is.

Remember the Canklow floor being a skating rink also the toilets left alot to the imagination no lights at one time. But the music and company more than made up for these probs.

Its easier if I photo it and post it up like I do on the collecting British Thread. There must be somewhere that plays this sort of stuff or similar without the r&b,popcorn, latin, slowies in the middle of the night.

This is, imo, the where categorising of soul falls apart.

JJ BARNES,SUNDAY,SANDRA RICHARDSON,GWEN OWENS,COLLINS & COLLINS,MARBOO,DAVID RHODES,LIFE.

Some class oldies in there.Uptempo - yes.Traditional Northern that gets plays at NS venues - no.

Right from the off I want a full Nighter, I am not going to travel for one of those "Mini Allnighters" and I want the do to finish as near to 0800hrs as possible, I draw the line at 0600hrs but I don't like it.

Absolutely spot on here!!

Definition of an allnighter as was and should still be!! Start time no earlier than 11:30pm and finish at 08:00 no earlier or later. I too dislike these extended soul nights or mini nighters as they have become known. As a scene we have always been different from any other social music event, its what set / sets us apart from all the other dross thats about. Your 02:00 finish is reserved for the Shaz and Kaz types.

I maybe as we all are getting older but i have no wanting to be tucked up in bed at a sensible time to enable me to be up bright and early to see what the new day brings............fuck that!! Middle aged has made me feel no older in myself and i still act as though i am in my twenties.

And if i could add one more wish on the wish list it would be that in the summer months with daytime coming at around 03:45 i can remember when promoters got this and used to black out any daylight coming into the nighter and killing the whole concept really by placing black bin liners or anything to hand over the said windows in order to stop this from happening...ie: The Fleet/Parr Hall/Leisure Center/Clifton Hall they all did it.

Bring it back!!............please!

the venue is all important ie empress ballroom ,a balcony is a must, no bright lights, fancy mirrors or endless corridors,NO TALC except under arm pits, a place to doss at 4-30 when the body refuses to stomp any more, 2 rooms plus 8 hours their must be summit 4 every f@@ker , oh im quite a dab hand at spraying my own pits so no creepy dudes lurking in the bogs with left over fathers day smellies

some interesting record scans.

I expect i want an all nighter cause Peterborough no longer does have them, most of them here at 7.30 - 1.00 say. but i would be happy to attend at least 1 or 2 a year where i can arrive at 8.00 and come home about 5.00/6.00 cause that's when i do get tired to finish the last hour or 2.

i also expect tunes to be mixed and know that some DJ's might sway towards a style but i be ok with that i don't mean 1 dj does all modern then next one dj does all oldies just a dj if they are mostly for say modern then be ok if they play a few oldies and rest being modern.

lastly i expect i go to many venues based on fact i will know the people there.

Thanks very much for the positive comments with regards to the night we run at The Marton Country Club in Middlesbrough, although it's not an all nighter our aim is to please the paying punter first and foremost, we try to give them what they want and as i've said before if a dj is playing to an empty floor he's not doing the job he's being paid to do and that's to entertain people. We pick people to play who we know are going to please the paying public as we all go to these night's to enjoy the music and dance and hopefully bump into friends old and new. :hatsoff2:

We must be doing it right as we get crowds of over 400 regular now.
