here's someone trying to sell a record but (at the time of writing this) there are two comments from other members about it.

You can look at this a couple of ways.

Firstly, that's wrong to comment on someone's price and possibly scupper his sales.

But secondly, it's letting people know that the same record is available regularly on ebay for less money and in better condition.

So really it could be seen as being in the interests of the site in general.

The seller os obviously going to be upset that people have commented negatively about his sales post, but other people may be glad that they may be able to get the record cheaper.

I don't think there's any solution to this really. I know I've wanted to comment hundreds of times after seeing massively overpriced records for sale or records in VG being offered for the price of a mint one, but I can't remember the last time I actually did.

Any thoughts?

I'd say in general no comments on pricing in the sellers post but when there is a clear mistake or piss take that's when comments could be admissable.

The nature and content of the comment would then need to be moderated - so back to you ultimately

Both comments valid - they are on ebay in better nick and cheaper, I feel the seller is trying to insinute that perhapes the ones on the bay are not kosher, but they are. He needs to adjust his price acordingly...

If the seller don't want any comments they can lock the thread.

As most collectors are quite able to research prices themselves I´d vote this a "no go". Prices I´m supposed to pay for a 45 in GB often differ a lot to the ebay prices anyway, and even prices on the sales forum sometimes have a wide range

I hardly ever comment on other people's sales, but bearing in mind there is a whole thread about this particular record, and my comment was perfectly correct and valid, do you really think people are not aware of the price, condition, and easy availability of the Ebay copies ?

If they are, it contradicts you posting it though Dave, if they already know, why bother telling them again?

I'm not having a go, the opposite in fact, the more info the better I'm just asking if it should be done or not.

Have seen prices for some records on here vary to up to 3x the cheapest asked price, so let everyone try his luck, the market sorts it anyway.

I would agree with the comments already posted but I dunno if I would have said anything to be honest. I did read it before any comments were made. As said it is opening a can of worms.

I do think he was wide of the mark with his valuation. He does state he had expenses but that doesn't come into the price of a record really, we have all taken losses on records we spent a few bob on only for the value to drop as copies surface.

We've all been tempted to say what we really think..................................BUT You really are putting your head above the parapet to be shot at, if you're a record seller, and you've been criticising other people's prices. Same goes for D.J.'s that slag other D.J.'s sets, Promoters that slag off other events etc etc. I fully understand where Pete's coming from, with regards to sharing knowledge, but from a personal point of view I really, really, really try and avoid airing any negative points in someone's sales thread.

If the seller wants £500 or whatever that's their business. If they get it, they get it. If they don't, they don't.

Easy solution is just to lock threads and then edit where sales have been made. Simples!

price guides are just that a guide, they are not gospel. The guide was done before a few hundred surfaced via e-bay, which he apparently knows about.

But even if he didn't know maybe a quiet word via Pm would suffice to highlight that he is offering something in pounds what can be had in dollars on ebay?

One technicality.... as a ''mint minus'' man I can't edit any posts after 60 minutes ... so if you lock sales threads I and others wouldn't be able to update any sales we had posted to advise what had been sold and what was still available or reduced in price .....

reg sellers should have a solid email and solid id

all anyone has to do to get mint is pm with me em, eg a solid email and id

You have the Manship book of records, Popsike and the Soulsource rule of thumb. The sale price of the record on the page is a start but after a few Pm,s and trades what is seen on the cover is not really the whole deal

Its an open forum and unless you lock the page anyone can have a poke at you for your offerings, sounds like a Frankie Howard ditty.

If i was selling somthing bang over the odds, I think I would defffo appreciate oppinions and being pointed in the right direction.

You can't get it right all the time when you buy or sell things can you.

Maybe a PM would be a bit more subtle and polite.

But as mentioned - this is a forum and unless you lock the thread you are inviting comments.

Just seen a pretty common record come up on site for sale that IMO should be £30 tops (in fact I sold one for that in the last 12 months or so), yet the seller wants £80 for it.

I can't imagine that demand for it has gone up since (if not fallen to be honest).

Correct . Soul Source is a live forum and anything posted up is in the public arena for all to view and discuss. And there's the key word discuss. Anybody that posts up on a live forum hopes to get positive replies but by the very nature of forums there's a chance that negative comments might come your way. That's the risk you take when posting on live forums - end of. Whether it is sound clips, photographs, events, threads or whatever. It's everybody's prerogative to reply be it good or bad if that's what they want.

We all like the benefits of free advertising our sales on forums but with that freedom comes the downside risk of somebody nibbling at you. Locked threads could be the answer but that's not the issue here. And if you invert this thread "Why wouldn't you want anybody to post a negative comment if that's the way they felt". That's the real issue here as I see it.

i must say having only recently started looking for wants, im so niaive about what would constitute a mint minus vs very good, after one well known collector queried the price i was goin to hand over one night at a venue with a formidable gentleman who was about to pocket double the records actual value. i realised canvassin several respected views is more prudent than expecting a divine intersetion. If you dont know what the range of prices are and cool off for a few minutes before buying , then chances are you ,ll probably regret it. Business is business , but it,d be a strange scene if no-one actually spoke up when judgement and fairness was becomin obscured by money.

I would assume you are simply playing devils advocate here Derek but you know that anyone who has been around records for an x amount of years knows when someone is extracting the urine.

It's not hard to find a price, often it only needs five minutes or so to find a bench mark figure for a record. Yes there will be discrepancies but isn't there always in life? The difference here was the seller was fully aware of the record going through ebay on many occasions and I would assume the prices achieved yet still lists at a figure in £'s when it doesn't fetch what was asked in $'s.

Very interesting thread and one with already lots of good answers/comments.

The fact that you can close a thread (as a moderator pointed out) can nix any more comment and someone did say "what if they were selling too cheap?" Its all part of the rare soul collecting scene and the getting of wisdom is sometimes an expensive thing.

I think the comments should be more about the reputation of SoulSource list itself, so that is NOT seen promoting rip-offs, condoning miss information and/or attempting the reverse upon sellers. But then again if you have made it here you should also have some knowledge of what you're dealing with, though a mention of the current "going rate" based on popularity of an item would NOT be offensive, and outright knowledge of a fake or ensuing rip-off albeit proven and shared, would be protecting everyone's interests.

Hope these few words help in the discussion.

if posting comments on sales are good or bad is ok then i agree, i would welcome any comments and even debate on my sales when i put them up, for me it may iron out a few wrinkles and then any potential buyer would feel they are getting a record at a price they could be happy with if i was willing to be flexible to any innaccuracies which i would be,

If im looking to buy then i would take in all comments and make me own mind up wether to buy or not,

the only comments i feel should be left out are wether someone not interested in buying the record posts that they think its a shite record etc etc, each to their own we all like something someone else dont.

unless of course the seller is trying to pull a fast one and make as much as possible and knowing that their price is way over the odds and hoping some mug buys a record from then then WHY would they not welcome any constructive comments on their sales

My previous reply said ,ALL SALES SHOULD BE LOCKED ...then only the seller can edit cos there really is no need for anyone to post anything on a sales page .

If someone is asking for a pm or email ,then that's the correct and only procedure to reply .

The only exception i can think of is ,if someone has spotted a mistake by the seller ,like not grading or some other missed detail .

Definitely no place for people to go off on one with ,"f**k me thats overpriced buddy "

Oddly though the people who make the comments never sell on here or they'd know it is bad etiquette!
