Did any one really jump from the balcony?

Throughout the years there have been many strange stories about the many iconic venues, some easily dismissed and others that have embedded into Northernsoul Folklore.

One of the strangest stories that I heard was of some one leaping from the balcony in order to dance to a favorite record, is this true or is this complete rubbish?

It wass alleged that someone , upon hearing the opening bars to " Afternoon On The Rhino " , was in such a hurry to dance to the record , that he leapt from the balcony of WC onto the dance floor .

This story is still filed under the " Bollocks " section awaiting confirmation , as the mystery person has yet to come forward .

Iwas tripping at the time which made it look all the more splendiferous...............................

Urban myth, i feel, this one started about 1978/79 just after the release of "Quadrophenia" ,after the bit where Jimmy jumped from the balcony to "upstage" Sting, and a couple of weeks later someone was on about doing "a Jimmy" at the Casino,and i believe it went on in folk lore that somebody had actually jumped.

That,s how i heard it( did know bout the Torch one ,and the injury tho)

The story goes that someone jumped off the balcony to World Without Sunshine in late 73/early 74. I started going to the Casino in Sept 74 and the tale was going around then.

I went to the Casino 1975 to when it closed - I did hear when Hey little way out girl was massive - someone jumped over the balcony.

Looking back if you did jump off - that's a hell of a height, I guess hanging over the edge and letting go would be ok - depending on who's below.

Am sure Russ or Brian Rae would know??

Next question - what balcony was higher Mr M's or the main hall - for me it was Mr M's ???? Thoughts on a post card to !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no never happen simon, thats why the ds was outside searching people, in the early days if they came inside, the would be worried that soulies would have jumped off the balcony, the story goes, john vincent, hung a bloke over the balcony, for dodgy record deal, thats how the story was told to me, talking about storys, frank wilson, D.I,L,Y was only played twice, it was eddie foster that did the work, you dig it, cheers Billy.

I once contemplated throwing myself off the balcony : it was when " The Lurch " was played .

Even if I had , people would not have heard my cries of anguish , due to the guilty DJ scraping the barrel very loudly ........

Just as further evidence to the (in)famous backdrop off the Torch balcony,Les Rushton has dropped in for a brew and said "I was there that night and Pete did a perfect backdrop first time,then went back and did it again.............................breaking his arm in the process"....................................Sheeee itttt...........................
