i, of course, just spin for fun here in california - so i play just whatever strikes my fancy. something i got for $2 dollars or $200. no one cares because no one in my crowd knows soul any more rare than "baby love" by the supremes.

 

at the "big" events in england, however, do the DJs ever spin cheap/common records mixed in their set? (like i mean super cheap/common - like "right back where we started from" by maxine nightingale, or "be thankful for what you've got" by william devaugh) or is everything rare and pricey? what are the most cheapie/common things "top shelf" DJs play? do you ever get hassled for it?

Off topic again but on the subject of Ronnie Milsap there are a number of budget albums on labels like Trip and Gusto which collected the Scepter recordings (some never issued by Scepter) to cash in on his Country stardom of the mid 70s.

 

A track i've always liked from these which could be played at a broadminded soul night is "I Can't Stop Crying". Soulful pop really but with a great vocal and a vintage American Studios production.

The Festivals is a first hour warm up or chill out tune for soul nights or sunday sessions,but you know that.

Hi Gaz, that's not strictly true. there's a collectors angle here too. A lot of us have played sizeable sums for good unknowns, either on spec or because they are unknown and hence by definition rare....But I do agree everyone is on a journey and everyone is at a different stage of that journey. One man's great £10 find is another's moment of boredom. We are all in different places. 

 

Also there is a massive difference between "rare" and "in demand". Rare is the most over used word I've ever heard (apart from "across the board").....basically used to describe any record more than £20. Plenty of these so called "rare" records are not rare at all and plenty of genuine good quality rare records aren't even on most people's radars.

 

 

 

Agree with everything there mate.  I have payed money for oscure things that i anticipate are rare. And obviously records that are rare and not generally played or known - my position is totally from a collectors point of view.

I remember Dave Evison playing Curtis Mayfield's 'Move on Up'  for the 1st time during his early morning set at Wigan Casino in the mid-seventies. I thought that was as gutsy as hell, a £1:00 universally released record played when the punters where counting every dance floor second, before being chucked onto the streets. It became a floor filler for months.

I remember Phil Dick had a copy of Ramona Collins circa 1993-94 and was playing it out

I always thought it was first played in the 80's, but wouldn't be surprised if Richard Searling played it earlier - I've had it on tape since the late 80's.

i got my first copy off Sam when he started to sell off his northern in 1980 so he was playing this on & off a year or 3 earlier, can't recall if it was long or short intro tho, the 1 i got in the late 80's from him in a trade for a miami flight does have the long intro 8-)
