      The only observation I use is if you ain't got the records leave it to someone else, there are plenty who do have the records.  Or as I said buy within your budget, plenty of good record

I used to hate it and dismiss it as R&B.

One day I listened to it and my ears opened.

Great band, great drums, great vocals, great tempo, great brass.

It actually starts R&B and gets more Northern as it goes along.

I can see why it's a big record and commands a big ticket price.

Spot on Richard. The drumming is truly stunning and the vocal oh so powerful. A record to dream of owning. I never tire of hearing it.

First time I heard this was at Sheridans when Tim Brown played it ( I was away from the scene 1974 -1998) so it was new to me.

 

Went to my number one want that very night. :thumbsup:

Ive had it since 1988 and played it at every opportunity since then, often get a rush to the floor at the first few bars even in the main room at Kings Hall

I like the record and it looks great, but I find it impossible to dance to, so I've never lusted after it.

Always been a top 10 want, although I have to agree with Phil in that it's just a tad too fast for a dancefloor full of 50+ year olds. Wouldn't stop me breaking the bank if one came up for sale though.

A mate once told me after he met Ray Agee that he wasn't aware the 45 had been released.  I doubt it was a bootleg and as I said in the topic in the link it wouldn't be the first time a record was released without the artists knowledge or consent.

Not suggesting for a second that it's a bootleg & that's why I quoted Ted's reply as well as the post that said it was a boot.

Just thought it might be of interest.

PS, in the highly unlikely event that it does turn out to be a bootleg I'll give you £50 for it Ted :D

The scene always has and always will have/need its vinyl grails(heroes),and the ray agee is defo in the top 10! It takes a long time for a record to reach such stature,and this one is well suited,and aint goin knowwhere!

He may well have said he wasn't aware of the 45/recording, was a long time ago when it was talked about.  I don't remember him saying explicitly that it wasn't him though.

Well whoever is the artist has a quite distinctive voice, unique in fact as is Bobby Bland!

The release of Hard Working Man on Jewel sounds like I'm Losing Again in embryo stage. Ray Agee was a prolific artist and swapped labels enough times to lose track of his output. The Soultown release may well have occurred without his knowledge but I doubt he ever denied performing the song. Whatever the truth, Ray has given us a truly brilliant masterpiece. Anyone know the facts about the LA Soultown label as it has a couple of big tunes, several common ones and a range of bootlegs?

So, looks like it's one the top 5 marmite records? I despised it when I heard it the first time (was on tape) and never rated it much ever since. Well, one day I heard it at a do and it blew me away. Great record when played out...

Not at all Phil, just my twisted sense of humour.

Think about it.....now rumoured as an early bootleg that was supposedly incorrectly credited as Ray Agee (who can't remember singing it despite sounding exactly like him)..... then covered up as James Conwell and first played by Searling....or Rushbrooke.....or Raistrick....and obviously soon to be re-booted once high res scans and flip side sound files have been successfully sourced from Soul Source members who will then complain bitterly when it's all over eBay for £6.99.

Its like a bad Fawlty Towers script........

.....my humour merely reflects this whole car crash of a thread.....
