When did it begin life as a soul club and until when?

What venues?  I know the Fleet in Peterborough was one.

Had a membership and Anniverasry badge somewhere Chalky but was lost back in the day along side most of my memorabilia. Heart of England soul club stuff, wigan etc etc

Hi chalky my memory serves me well, first east anglian soul club, ken or kev coxs, the first all nighter they did was demonford hall leicester did 3 around 72-73, the venue was only half full it didnt really take off then they moved to Peterborough and St ives. Tony clayton got involved later in the 70's at the peterborough all nighters and a few all dayers at kings lynn. Cheers Billy

Embankment - Bedford 78 (see Hammie)

The Fleet - Peterborough 78-82

He use to get DJs to sign contracts to only work for him - so when they DJed for other people they used different names , but the punters knew.

Mr Coops is best for info on Ken Cox he use to come from Stamford , think he use to get a lift with Ken to do's.

Great info guys.  I just need the basics for the 70's, who when and where etc.  It is the 80's I am more interested in and especially so Peterborough.

can anyone remember a lad called james? me think he use to be a regular at petebourgh all nighters, mid/late 70s. Use to come in early, straight to the centre of the dancefloor, plonk his carrier bag down, and coat. dance all night,3 or 4 times during the night, he use to sit in the middle of the floor eating bananas and get up and start dancing again, how bizare. im not to sure if he was called the banana man, or was i just imaging it? cheers Billy. Ps/ ill always remember Jonny Carole, top dancer.

I remember going to an all dayer at Kings Lynn - lots of scooter boys and a bit of a menacing atmosphere if my memory serves me correctly. Loads of us cramped in a red mini which had hardly any brakes, all the way from Spilsby, Lincs. I seem to recall the highlight for me being Arin Demain being played - but that could be complete nonsense, which I always have down as a Nev Wherry record.

Billy there was s guy from Abbotts Ripton Huntington called James use to sell records walked around in a long trench coat pulling records behind him on a shopping trolley thing - got done for cattle rustling.  It was about 79 at the casino he was selling records and had string going through the centre first time I ever saw that Coz people kept nicking his records

A very odd guy. I last saw him on the train to London c.1984 one day (he got on at Huntingdon). By that time he was working for the Israelis doing propaganda of some sort. He bored me all the way to Kings Cross talking about how the real oppressed in the middle east were the Israelis and we'd all been brainwashed by left wing politicians about Lebanon etc. A character I guess!  

St Ives alldayers also ran in the early 80s. 84-85. Used to do the modern room there, just found a poster from 84. PSC were running it by then. Ken Cox was, by the way, still about a year or two ago and on FB posting UKIP type stuff on his page. Maybe one to contact Chalky?

Steve - Peterborough Soul Club did 2 all dayers at St Ives (wow shot myself in the foot there Steves poster says 5th all dayer so they would have been running all dayers for at least 6 - 8 months) - then got heat off of the local council - so they stopped .   Russ Towers later did evening dos there , his wife's mum at the time, was a councilor at st Ives, the plot thickens, that's why S Gordon hit him at The Newage Stamford soul do - there's a lesson in there some where.

I remember DJing at that do in Stamford when a load of Peterborough's finest turned up. They damaged some cars in the car park, broke wing mirrors, scratched doors etc., then I saw Russ coming out the toilets with blood all over his face where he'd been chinned. I think we all ended up round Mick Cooper's flat afterwards.

Steve didn't know anything about the damage to property etc - hope the police were involved - I can understand slapping someone but damage to property is a no go.

Record I brought off James on one of this hunting trips to London paid £2:50   1979

Well i dont remember the vicar at EASC events.Too early for him.St Ives was king for us at the time. A good range of sounds that covered Wigan the Mecca and Cleethorpes.Peterborough was ok  but the all dayers at Kettering central hall was where i first started.Mighty soul area of Northampton.Kettering,Corby Wellingborough an Market Harborough.Good times.

 Keith I think Johnny is Johnny Carrol .Mr Howard's was a gent clothing shop on the corner of Hereward Arcade.I can only assume Uptown records was the small shop on Queens St between the Flamingo club and Trollops opposite Perkins Engines.

Yes, 'James' was a well known character at EASC niters, complete and utter lunatic, used to sell Mini bargain surprise Soul packs of several 45's all wrapped up prior to sale, and when you opened them up, mostly knackered, cracked, and crap pop music !!  Also used to get on his hands and knees on the floor when a favourite sound of his came on, and mentally beat his fists on the dancefloor to the beat !?!

That flyer is for the third night under Paul Donnelley.  Need to check but it could be the last under the EASC before Ken Cox registered the name and Paul D changed to the Phoenix SC.

Chalky,there must have been others after this.I wasn't 17 until May 75 and I can remember coming out of the allnighter and getting into the instructors car outside for my driving lesson.

Pete and Dave were the Mindems who ran "Rockhopper Roadshow" and supplied the equipment for the Allnighter.

Im sure Paul will fill in any gaps.Paul/Mick Donnelly did write an article chronicling the all nighters under his promotion.

I may have misread Smudge, Paul doesn't mention when it changed to Phoenix but it was certainly the Phoenix by the 2nd birthday all-nighter in Feb 1976.  I m,just try and find that article although Paul has given me some facts. I don't need an in-depth piece on the 70's, just enough to set the scene in Peterborough as the book will be basically Post Wigan.

New he had done EASC couldn't find the badge thought it was a bit earlier

Yep the Rockin' Vicar and Brian Rae were the two mainstays that I remember at St Ives and particularly The Fleet. Mick Smith (100 Club) also did the the odd guest slot. Bedford Nite Spot was a tremendous venue. Staying awake all night on blackcurrant and lemonade (ahem). I remember the late great Nev Wherry's collection going up for sale. I couldn't afford most of it then and I'm damned sure I couldn't now

Dave Reed's Dedicated Soul Club that took over the Fleet in 82 (he went away as part of Cross Bow), later (86ish) Bucky took on the Fleet (with Danny Everard initially I think). Dx

I knew him as Freddie, not James.  Visited his house once, next to the East Coast mainline.  It was full of his Dad's old Guards uniforms.  He wasn't interested in soul, just buying up UK new releases and selling them at Wigan (maybe the most well known now was the Jackson Sisters, but couldn't sell them in the day).

Mostly he got to Wigan on National Express buses.

Certainly a character, as I presume was his Dad.

James use to live with his dad at Abbots Ripton nr Huntingdon - kind of a bit eccentric - saw him get through to the semi finals of the dancing competition at the Wirrina once which more like having a fit - yes in thouse days 77-78 you could take the piss without having a metal breakdown - people use to nick his record’s especially at Wigan so he use to put sting through the middles - that was fine until someone cut the string - lost a lot of records at Huntingdon railway station for unpaid storage fee 

Must be the same guy, but we certainly knew him as Freddie.  I checked the map and note Abbots Ripton is near the East Coast mainline, so that's makes sense.  The A14 wasn't what it is now, but I would surely have got to his home from the A14.  Sorry I cannot be more specific, but I really aren't familiar with the area.

We saw him as simply eccentric, but yes I can believe that he had some severe mental issues.  Like so many people with such problems, he wasn't what you would call a lovely person, but yes it is wrong to exploit him.

James was well know in the Huntingdon/ Oxmoor estate late 70ts - Kev Draper / Kipross / Johnny Fingers all knew James he use to find the odd gem in London searching junk shops back in the day - am sure him and his dad got caught up in cattle rustling - one thing for sure he never took speed 🤔🤔
