Au Contrere Rodders!!x I walked into a cellar in Southend with 15 friends 1993..Stax Soul Club run by Shifty...20 folk there. He spun Danny Woods...Ketty Lester...Kurt Harris...they blew me away as I'd heard a couple of these tracks at the 100 club. He then spun Ray Merrell...and blew my mate Fudge away. Then we woz wiped out as he followed it with a pop tune!!! Innocence personified...and is why I invited him to DJ at his first all nighter!x Like me...he had no idea of context of his tunes to the scene....Oldie...newbie... pop...classic...it didn't matter....people danced!!x He regularly put a pop song in my view in his set!!x Ady Croasdell used to spin a chart Gladys Knight tune at the 100club...he said it is one if his favs...simple pop song which I forget what it was now...but he did it!!x So Shifty spinning Red Light...yup...no shock! Footsie???.....yep...he had that pi** take streak in him too!x Happy Days indeed!x

Me...Fudge and Steve at that very 1st Sax night in Southend!x The flyer is Shiftys first ever Nighter spot....even signed it under his own name.....a 'misprint'?!...worth squillions...one excited Lad when I got these signatures for posterity....like now...32 years later!!x I ran a competition to count the tunes featured in the flyer!! 4 free tickets...I gave them to the 4 nearest as nobody got it right!x I think there is 120+...took me 5 hours to think 1 night putting it together...no internet just Richard Domars list and the then new John Manship valuation book to work from!x Proud of that flyer!!xlarge.gallery_4070_326_1597602.jpg.edfd9b32a3c4d95f701008e2b4bad2bc.jpgFB_IMG_1708272162800.thumb.jpg.516459b1006e38a91bfe0622fa8d7a30.jpg

Yes that's a good flyer you've done there mate, it's a bit like the flyers in the days of The Catacombs where they invited the reader to come and listen to the sounds of and then listed about 8 current plays however in typical Sooty fashion you've taken it to the extreme with how many 120 ?😄

I spun it at a Wellingborough S/N on the Friday...and again Saturday night at my monthly Soul Night...and took it to Blackburn...spun it at 7.15am as the new 100 club anniversary single......on all 3 occasions...it cleared the floor. I bought his lp on the strength that there may have been something worthy to be played.

Sadly I'd wasted my brass,

it was all manufactured garbage.

Good topic geeselad,I’ve often wondered what was played early on,or what may have been played if not a pop release?

billy ocean-love really hurts without you

freda Payne-band of gold

these 3 off the top of my head, there will be many more!

Actually think Band of Gold was played as a new release on the UK Soul Scene, poss Twisted Wheel 1970 ?

I wasn’t referring to anything you said mate.  I was there at Cleethorpes too mate.  If I remember rightly Adam may also have played it one Sunday night.

Kurt Harris was played a long time before you were about.  Carla Thomas was first played by Ady, long time before the anniversary 45 came out and if I remember rightly one or two others were given cuts to play long time before it came out on the 45.

Honey Cone's "While You're Out Looking For Sugar" was a big sound @ the Wheel for some weeks after it gained US release.

Ady was playing Carla out long before the anniversary 45 came out.  He was doing other nighters as well as 100 Club back then.  It would be one of the other 100 Club residents who had it as well if they did.  But if not, Ady was definitely playing it out a couple of years at least.  Was playing it at Yarmouth weekenders as well if memory serves.  Ady always gets some mileage out off records before they are anniversary releases, especially the quality of Carla.  Kurt Harris, I had one of the first few to turn up after Ady had been spinning it.

You deserved some sort of a medal mate for ferrying the Cambridge lot around, I thought you might have been eligible for a carers allowance for looking after Jack & Fudge at weekends.😂

Rather harsh I must say ... !

Simon had merely isolated the vocal track from the bare bones demo version of INSLY to help possibly identify the as yet unknown singer , but now the post's been deleted we no longer have that opportunity ...

Calling it a low quality post considering some of the other 'content' in the thread is 'interesting' to say the least.

the same identical mp3 clip posted 3 times in one post,  no description, no origin

takes 5 seconds to post a cursory description on what it is or indeed why it has been posted

when asked for this,  we then got some nonsense late night posts in reply along with another untitled mp3

I have to admit; it’s in my box (although for some credibility it’s a US demo) & the next scooter rally I play, I can guarantee a sea of boots, bellies & braces bouncing along in a Northern Soul stylie.

Me too, I’ve got it on Aussie Epic I think. I do occasionally play it. Reminds me of scooter dos in the 8ts…

who said it was better that bill bush? Good on ya… I hate that bill bush record, the one on Ronn right?

Give me Tony Galla any day, oh and I’ll take a rain check on ‘Red Light’ unless I’m feeling nostalgic:/)

No matter how good pop it is, leave it for the chicken in a basket crowd, you knows that lot and the music  we went to niters to get away from.

Id say generally yes but there a few times records that were pop hits just fitted the bill as pre releases, teardrops, I love music, ain't nothing but a house party. All great records with soulful qualities

I agree but mostly they were dropped as soon as chart success followed although there are exceptions

Irony of the scene , records no one has yet heard played until they became mainstream, & records that slipped through the mainstream played for ever & a day , regardless of quality but rarity.

But that’s what the scene was based on, records that slipped through the net. We didn’t want the records everybody else had or wanted to hear. It is an elitist scene.

It grew into an elitist scene , it didn't start out that way , from much earlier posts that is pretty evident .
