Just heard Eddie pillar and keb, debating on this apparently thorny issue, on the excellent mod cast radio show. I've always thought it's just a pop tune that might get requested by a certain type of less discerning punter at a soul/ Motown night. Surely it wasn't played at nighters as a new release, was it?🧐😩🥺🥺🤯.

Footsie???.....yep...he had that pi** take streak in him too!x Happy Days indeed!x

Me...Fudge and Steve at that very 1st Sax night in Southend!x The flyer is Shiftys first ever Nighter spot....even signed it under his own name.....a 'misprint'?!...worth squillions...one excited Lad when I got these signatures for posterity....like now...32 years later!!x I ran a competition to count the tunes featured in the flyer!! 4 free tickets...I gave them to the 4 nearest as nobody got it right!x I think there is 120+...took me 5 hours to think 1 night putting it together...no internet just Richard Domars list and the then new John Manship valuation book to work from!x Proud of that flyer!!x

Yes that's a good flyer you've done there mate, it's a bit like the flyers in the days of The Catacombs where they invited the reader to come and listen to the sounds of and then listed about 8 current plays however in typical Sooty fashion you've taken it to the extreme with how many 120 ?😄

I agree!!x I was told Emperor of my baby's heart wasn't Northern...If you dont know what love is by Fats Domino was Rock n Roll...and Coming Home Baby was a crooners easy listening!!x All said by hard core dealers/stalkers who were in the dark corners of the 100 club when I spun them!x Ady gave me a copy of a tune on the Thursday before the Saturday Anniversary as I couldn't make it as I was DJing at Blackburn Tony's A/N same night. I spun it at a Wellingborough S/N on the Friday...and again Saturday night at my monthly Soul Night...and took it to Blackburn...spun it at 7.15am as the new 100 club anniversary single......on all 3 occasions...it cleared the floor. I was devastated. The record I was first to spin publicly?....Carla Thomas I'll never stop loving you.....!x

So yep my friend...I do understand. But folks perception and tastes change over time...I've reckoned!x

I bought his lp on the strength that there may have been something worthy to be played.

Sadly I'd wasted my brass,

it was all manufactured garbage.

I used to hear it a lot at local mod / NS / Scooter events in Medway around 1983-5. It makes me cringe now.

Kurt Harris was played a long time before you were about.  Carla Thomas was first played by Ady, long time before the anniversary 45 came out and if I remember rightly one or two others were given cuts to play long time before it came out on the 45.

...thought I'd get the chance to say hi at some point Chalky!!x Emperor...correct but folk did look for anything to get at me back then mate...never took them seriously!!...still don't.  Carla? was there in London all during the week leading up to the Anniversary...the boxes arrived ready to go...he gave me the 1st out of the box and said i'm the first to get one!!x As for hearing it out there prior....I was with all the nighter DJs UK wide....usually first to arrive last to leave.....never heard it anywhere...and I would have known!x Can you recall who...? Ady was playing Carla out long before the anniversary 45 came out.  He was doing other nighters as well as 100 Club back then.  It would be one of the other 100 Club residents who had it as well if they did.  But if not, Ady was definitely playing it out a couple of years at least.  Was playing it at Yarmouth weekenders as well if memory serves.  Ady always gets some mileage out off records before they are anniversary releases, especially the quality of Carla.  Kurt Harris, I had one of the first few to turn up after Ady had been spinning it.

You deserved some sort of a medal mate for ferrying the Cambridge lot around, I thought you might have been eligible for a carers allowance for looking after Jack & Fudge at weekends.😂

Simon had merely isolated the vocal track from the bare bones demo version of INSLY to help possibly identify the as yet unknown singer , but now the post's been deleted we no longer have that opportunity ...

Id say generally yes but there a few times records that were pop hits just fitted the bill as pre releases, teardrops, I love music, ain't nothing but a house party. All great records with soulful qualities

I agree but mostly they were dropped as soon as chart success followed although there are exceptions

But that’s what the scene was based on, records that slipped through the net. We didn’t want the records everybody else had or wanted to hear. It is an elitist scene.

It grew into an elitist scene , it didn't start out that way , from much earlier posts that is pretty evident .

After many weeks, why are people even commenting on this, what a sad waste of time. Can we have some proper interesting articles on here please, record reviews, playlists, venue reports, DJ profiles, record collecting finds, etc, not continual debate over a quite insignificant chart record that surely has no place being talked about in the first place !?!

Something old something new by The Fantastics big pop hit in the early seventies played in every Youth club, Has this anything to do with soul?

At the time they were living and working in England and I believe it was penned by Greenaway and Cooke.Either way a great record imo.

Dont know if he was lead singer at the time but Ritchie Pitts ,about the same time made a brilliant Soulful record for Contempo "Every Couples Not A Pair "
