Happy New Year to one and all. A new year means a new beginning, so here is what is now the 10th Soul Source photography thread.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed over the years, whether by posting up pics, commenting on them, or simply liking them.

My first contribution is a short iPhone slo-mo vid of some fireworks as seen from our balcony as 2021 departed and 2022 began.

Here's to a great year ahead!

Not my image obviously , but one I have to share nevertheless ...

The first deep image from the James Webb Space Telescope , Webb’s image covers a patch of sky approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length by someone on the ground – and reveals thousands of galaxies in a tiny sliver of vast universe .

Click on and scroll back 13 billion years .... all this from just 12.5 hours integration ... :)

I worked on the James Webb program; it was one of the most interesting projects I worked on in my 41-year career in the aerospace defense projects. We made the nonexplosive actuators that opened the 3 sun shields, totally mission critical, if just one failed it would be a been a mission failure. To see the whole assembly in the high bay at Northrop was spectacular.

I always thought that if you had a 'big bang' then the result would be expansion in all directions, like a bomb blast or drop of water into a puddle etc.

Can anyone please explain why we can look back 13 billion years to nothing/ creation of the universe but there does not seem to be anything on the 'otherside' of the bang?

Sorry if I'm being stupid.

I am genuinely interested in the answer.

  • Author

Yes, what existed and came together that it might create the Big Bang?

And - here’s one that’s always puzzled my little brain - if the universe is infinite, why is it expanding?

Maybe a new thread needed for discussion on these topics.

A couple of days around Bala/Barmouth and had a flyover of the Hercules two days running over the campsite. In fact on the Tuesday morning two flew over 5 minutes  apart. A Great sight. Barmouth is always a favourite

Am I missing something ... ?   That's a Hercules.

You'd need a slightly longer focal length to see two Lancasters in the air as there are only two flying examples in the world and "Vera" is in Hamilton , Ontario ... she and our own BBMF Lanc haven't been in the air together since 2014.

Oh my mistake. We were told by someone on site it was a Lancaster and not really being in the know. Still a great sight and one Hercules flew over the daughter's house today while we were sitting in the garden 👍

Here are a few shots I took of the two Lancasters together in the sky from Little Gransden Airshow back in August 2014 ...

Just knocked up a quick animation from the 28 frames I caught as he turned for home overhead ... :)

Generally they just fly by straight and level so the timing was a tad lucky today ...

P.S   The thumbnail's a shot I snatched earlier , unfortunately he wasn't as close this afternoon ... :(

Was waiting for the Spitfire to appear over the trees ( could hear his Merlin growling from miles away ) when this fella kinda distracted me ...

Knocked up a quick animation in Moviemaker of the 20 odd frames.

Bit of TLC on this boat and it should come back to life 🤔 Taken on the River Exe the other day

A few pics from last night's firework display in Aalsmeer. It takes place every year on the first Saturday of September (lockdowns excluded of course!) and is one of the three largest displays in the Netherlands. The fireworks are launched from a barge anchored about 50 metres from shore. It's well worth seeing if you happen to be in the Netherlands at that time of the year.

The quality of my pics isn't brilliant as they were taken with my iPhone.

Couple of 'test' shots with the new camera , I picked up an "as new" EOS 2000D from MPB for the wildlife and aircraft side of things , but obviously I had to try it out on the end of a 'scope too ... :)

The woodpecker's a crop of about 1/4 of the original 6000 x 4000 image.

You might not think so, but it's a good enough photo for me. But with the Blue Jays playing, maybe it depends on the point of view.

Over the last couple of weeks the side road outside where we live has been dug up and the sewage pipes below replaced. This afternoon the workmen relaid the road surface, which is made up of bricks. These were originally laid in a herringbone pattern with all bricks being the same colour. Now they're not - and the pedestrian crossing is, well, like something out of an abstract nightmare.

A Thursday afternoon visit to the seaside, in this case Zandvoort on the North Sea. A bit windy, a spattering of rain, but plenty of bright sunshine and blue skies when the clouds broke. Cobwebs were definitely blown. All told, not bad for late November, not bad at all.
