Why?

Where did he go?

Off the NS radar maybe?

(Simply do the equation - 'Levine + NS = Todays NS scene', as opposed to you, yourself added to the same equation - 'Me + NS = a half full, misinformed dancefloor'....who has the more relevant view?)

Would this site even be here without his well documented/critiqued input? WIF!!

I love the fact that he has been unable to bite his well-bitten lip any longer.

Back to my own views - some of the sh*te that has been posted on this thread is laughable - truly laughable but all the same...funny.

I'd like to be childish and say that some of the replies on here 'have been an eye opener', or some other sh*tty response....but they haven't...some of the responses have just been, simply, perfect...for my mind anyhow.

You're never bigger than The Street, remember that!

Anyway, who gives a f*ck what the s/track is - or who is in in the background....or whatever.

Just revel in it.

Scene one:

John Leslie walks from behind a pre-fab garage to the strains of 'We Will Rock You' by Queen.

Sitting next to a 'bonnie', topped with a smouldering tyre is Lulu, drawing heavily on a ciggie:

"Ay Johnnie, ye need to ditch that leather jacket son and git yersel' some o' these trendy bowling shirts on sonny! Freddies dead, don't you know?"

....and on!!!

I have sat by and watched this fiasco for long enough.

It's like a parent whose children have degenerated into schoolyard bullies.

The last time I was a member of Soul Source was in December 2000, on the original Soul Source Talk, from which I was banned.

After nearly eight years, I have asked Mike Hughes to let me post on here, because as one of the pioneers of your "scene" it makes me sick to my stomach how a few fascists have become what are basically internet trolls and tarred all the others with the same brush.

Back on the Mary Fox show, I was unfair to many Soul Source members. Most are kind and caring people who love their music.

It's those few I see - Tomangoes, Pikey's Dog, Steve Guarnori, Mark Bicknell, Jumping Joan, Black And White, etc etc etc, who are so possessive of their unique scene of rare records and soul collectors, that they deny the music any chance to exist in another thirty years.

I have spent a lifetime fighting this sort of anarchy, and believe me it has taken a lot to make me come on here and post.

Some of you on this thread should be ashamed of yourselves.

A film is being set in an era of Wigan in 1974.

You are dictating what the music should be.

The biggest 1974 record in Wigan was The Javells "Goodbye Nothing To Say". I went every week. I know. I was there. Colin Curtis did the last two hours at the Mecca every week so that les Cokell and I could go to Wigan.

No-one is expecting to have The Javells in the film, but this dictatorial insistence on only purist original sounds is bordering on the fascist ideals of 1930s germany.

Dave Godin would turn in his grave.

I am ashamed of some of you.

And now I am here to not let you get away with your closed minded strangulation of a beautiful music form. You won't be happy till you're all seventy and dancing in your zimmer frames to Arthur Willis and The Soulful Dynamics.

I have had THREE MILLION views of my videos on YouTube.

THREE MILLION.

Much as you will all hate to admit it, people who loved Northern Soul still love "Out On The Floor", "I'm On My Way", and "Do I Love You".

Who are you to say they shouldn't ????

It's the tiny tiny few ruining it for all the rest.

Outside of the tiny purist clubs with Soul Sam and Mark Bicknell, the rest of the Northern Soul Scene, you know - the bigger wider picture - made Sidney Barnes "Standing On Solid Ground" into the absolute biggest floorfiller of the last few years. But you won't even accept that fact. Because it wasn't made in 1969 and only one hundred copies pressed and Soul Sam paid a thousand quid for it.

It's just hypocrisy.

Your treatment of this film is hypocrisy.

There are two films being made using a backdrop of Northern Soul. It's the best thing that could happen to the music. It might bring in a huge influx of people and damage your little rare club forever, and let music breathe again and be made anew. Lets hear songs with a Motown beat and a great melody again.

I live for it and I pray for it.

There are too many ridiculous statements and attitudes in this spiel to address, but Dave Godin would certainly not be turning over in his grave; though he might have been at that statement.

Dave left the Northern Soul scene that he inadvertently named, because of unsufferable egos who were putting themselves above the music. His main concern was that the artists, writers, producers etc who made the music, got the credit they deserved. As far as I can see most of the objections to this film have been based on the soundtrack, by people concerned that it was not going to represent the music that was played at the time properly, and the correct artists etc not being recompensed. That seems pretty reasonable, I know I'd rather see money in the hands of Popcorn Wylie than Duffy or Paul Weller for this. It's a rare chance to represent our scene with the fantastic music that we have loved for so long, so hopefully they'll get it right, possibly even with SSers help. I wish the posters WERE dictating the music policy, I'm sure the soundtrack would be good, but sadly I don't think SS has that much clout in the film world. Keb's explained that there will be plenty of original music, properly sourced and I and probably most of the critics are content with that.

The most anti-film post that is quoted is that a member hopes the film will fail because the producers are out to rip the scene off (well that's the gist of it), hardly fascist, just an opinion, I'm sure the film-makers won't stop the project because of that. Lets keep things in perspective.

Just had a call from my daughter Gemma, she and my son Daniel have been "on set today" at Kings Hall, and they are both really p***ed off, they have been there all day from 9.30am till 8.00pm and her words to me were, that they have done f**k all, she said its taken them an hour to film 10 seconds of the actors stretching in the middle of the dancefloor i mean ffs whats all that about eh! And they have also thrown paracetamols all over the floors in the corridors , and trashed the toilets with graffiti over the walls, saying "Wigan casino rules" etc....... They are expecting them to go again tomorrow morning, and to be there for 7.30am, but they have both decided not to go they said the film crew are all up the own arses and a load of arrogant twats. And they don't want to be a part of something thats going to make a mockery of the northern soul scene.

Thank god!

You may call that a nightmare but to thousands of people that was a watershed, I couldn't believe what I was watching and so many people joined the northern scene as a result of that TOTP appearance; yes, I know a lot were tourists and didn't stay, but a lot of people did stay and are still around nowadays

OK, hate having to be so sensible and I can't even begin to pick my way through all the off-topic posts, but can we please use this thread for talking about THE FILM.

All members are expected to keep to the forum house rules - https://www.soul-source.co.uk/forum-house-rules - should be fresh in everyone's mind since they were updated recently

Ian - all new members are expected to do an intro, perhaps that would be a better place to discuss your role in the soul scene than a topic which is about something else.

This is the post that I most object to.

This is why I came back on Soul Source - THIS post.

The most ignorant and fascist minded post I have ever read.

In my humble opinion, you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself, PaulTP.

Started reading this again this morning as an excuse to not start working and saw this  Blimey!

So just a reminder as part of a longer post I said this:

"I hope they and the other film makers fail miserably and all proposed films about northern soul die on their *rse. They have no interest whatsoever in the music, they are just bandwagon jumpers"

The reason I said this is in the relatively short time I have been into Northern Soul, each time people such as "ipso facto" (still can't type that without laughing) have wafted in and out of Northern Soul the temporary publicity generated attracts other aspects of the media who take a brief look at NS; make some sound-bite remarks and then naff off. In the wake of the sound-bites comes rubber neckers who p*ss everyone off for a short but unhappy period. There are no positives from coverage like this.

As an example of this does anyone remember the guardian coverage of The 100 Club followed by pieces in Loaded and a couple of other mags? All the London clubs were over run with idiots for about 3 months and then they all naffed off somewhere else.

My personal opinion is that people find Northern Soul in whatever way they want - it doesn't find them.

I do hope the films fail, not because I have anything personal against the makers or anyone involved, but because I think they are typical wafters in and out who will use a current perceived trendiness to make some money then naff off. There will not be any positive outcome for anyone other than themselves.

Mr Levine; as for your "ignorant and facist" comments (with the eybrow raising "humble opinion" one :yes: ) perhaps you should go back over some of the frankly appalling comments you made about people when you launched your humbly named "advanced-northern-soul" list (prior to your promotion of The Rocket) to read some really "ignorant and facist" remarks.

While we're on the subject of wafters in and outers, does your arrival on this forum and this particular thread possibly have anything to do with some involvement in "ipso facto" (sorry  ) and/or the film? Or is this just another opportunity to promote your awful CD's - NS 2007 and the worse follow up NS 2008.

I saw your first post and stopped reading half way through as it looked like your normal cut and paste "outraged of London" effort, I'll have to go back and read it again (or maybe not). I wondered why the thread had gone from 9 to 12 pages overnight and also how you had got to 23 posts so quickly. Then I saw some of your other one-liners (grow up by the way) and realised.

I reckon you'll post on here for about 2 weeks or so then naff off in a huff to return about 6 weeks before the film or project you are currently involved in launches. Might be fun but previous experience suggests that it will just deteriorate.

Ta & Ta-Ta!

Paul

I used to see you at Welcome inn, Sale Mecca, Socelys Blackpool (spelling ?) Darwin Tiffs during the week around that time.

I had stopped going to Wigan Sept 75, didn,t go back till 78.

P.S. I still love B. Pennington, E. Thomas and L. J. Johnson

All of whom appeared live at Wigan in February 1976, because, as I said, we didn't all fall out till later that year.

Russ would never have had a show like that appear at Wigan once we had fallen out.

Im heading out the door to Stoke now for a seven hour bus journey from Brighton.

Im actually looking forward to the filming tomorrow. I reckon this will be a good film from what I've read about it. As long as the clips of the club scenes feature original Northern Soul then Im all for it.

Surely the producers are trying to be authentic in their portrayal of the Wigan Casino if they are consulting regulars and people involved with the Casino and the Soul scene.

There is so much begrudgery towards a film that no one has seen. Like I said earlier people should wait until its out. Perhaps this film will get some genuine interest in young people about Northern Soul. Surely thats a good thing and something the artists would appreciate. After all they made the music so that people could listen to it.

I will let you know how it all fairs out. See some of you down at the King's Hall in the morning.
