Best of luck with this.

After living with the spoken version for so long I'm really looking forward to hearing the instrumental track. As I've said before, it's one of Ian and Clive's best productions in my opinion.

Personally, I don't like the label design but that's a subjective thing and I really don't think it matters very much.

I hope it does well.

I went back and listened to the whole original version, and I had forgotten how much less danceable it is, purely because I had gotten so used to our version.

The label is very reminiscent of Parkway, yes.

The answer to your questions is utterly simple. This is 100% legal in every single way, everything is fully licensed. EVERYONE is getting paid, right down to Isaac Hayes estate (via MCPS).

Firstly the design has nothing to do with me.

I was merely commenting that I liked it. I see it as a kind of Sixties homage.

As for Cameo and Parkway, they're owned by Alan Klein, a man with, shall we say, a not so nice reputation. All the artists have been trying to get a class action against him for years because he won't do deals and won't release the old stuff and does the artists out of millions of pounds of royalties that they might have earned if their old product had been owned by a more co-operative person, especially so I'm told for Chubby Checker, The Orlons, Bobby Rydell, Len Barry etc etc, all of whom hate him like he was the AntiChrist.

Do you prefer this label design then?

It's only on a few promo's though, so you won't likely to be able to get one. But some folks on here will.

White label demos are difficult not to like in my opinion....

Just thought that with today's software a "fresher" looking label could have been designed for a "new" label rather than using a similar existing "old" label design...

What is most surprising is that the tempos are very similar. The major difference is the drum pattern and bass line which gives your version more drive. Isaac's version now sounds quite relaxed in comparison.

The fact that they are so different probably explains why I can still enjoy both versions.

The tempos had to be similar, because Gary The Master Blaster's original speech was spoken over the original Isaac Hayes version, and sound expert Mark Ayres managed to lift the speech and remove the music, which meant that our new version had to be at the same tempo for the speech to fit over it.

I hadn't heard the original for a long time, and I was just surprised at how much mellower it was, as I had gotten used to our version over the last ten years.

I know it was directed at Phil, but I believe in freedom of religion, race and sexual orientation.

I didn't like it one bit on here, a couple of weeks ago, when some retard accused my being gay as being a genetic problem, and neither do I like it when I see a friend criticised because he has certain religious beliefs.

If people don't speak out, we end up being like the current state of America under George Bush, where civil liberties have been crushed underneath the jackboot of the moral majority.

I am not attacking you personally so much as the way you used his religion as a weapon to criticise.

Speaking for myself only, I read this addictive site everyday. Wether its 'Look In Your Box', 'Refosoul' etc. I see or hear some stuff I have not heard for a long time, or hav not heard before. It gets you thinking if you like it, or it sounds better than you remember. You then look in 'Sales', Ebay, Amazon etc....

Thats just speaking for my self only. Thats only my opinion. What do I know anyway. I just like what I like, read what I want to read.

I too believe in the freedom to be who you are but I fail to see a link to my post as I didn't "critcise" his religion...

I repeat, for anybody to now wash their hands of previous wrongdoings after disappearing and finding God doesn'tr make the wrongdoings right or any less to those affected.... that is not criticising religion that is stating to use it to proclaim absolution from things past doesn't wash with some people....

I feel you read too much into the religion comments instead of grasping the point....

Now I'm getting back to work because it may be frowned upon by my colleauges that I'm utilising the NHS PC network inappropriately :( ....

Regarding the Parkway label design, I like it, but agree with the previous poster who said the typeface was hideous.

I also agree with Vaultofsouler about Phil Dick being born again, I liked the old Phil and I really like this new one but that doesn't mean he should be forgiven for being a tw*t in a previous incarnation.

There's a wealth of difference IMO with the Gary The Master Blaster version being massively more danceable and punchy. The Isaac Hayes version is almost like a bossa nova cocktail lounge version compared to GTMB, hence the reason why the original never exactly set the dancefloors alight. Some people would consider it heresy but I far prefer GTMB's version to the original and I LOVE Isaac Hayes!

I like the new pastiche designs, I've done a few for Expansion over the years and I think the idea of doing them should be looked on as complimentary, rather than looked on as something derogatory.

Got to agree on the typeface issue though (being a typographer I would do!), the choice of font can be all-important to the genuine look of these labels.

I must say it was the typsetting and the mistakes that put me off, not the colours or style.

If you haven't already gone to print you should have another go at it, using condensed fonts for titles and be careful with the small print. I don't think it works when you set small print in bold.

Look for the kind fonts that have an old 'hot metal' equivalent, ones that would have been used in the 60s and 70s in particular - Engravers, Gothic, Imprint, Didot, Modern (funnily enough! :( ) - I know these can cost money but equivalents to most of them can be found on blogs or free websites. Arial is quite simply the shittest typeface ever invented, why anyone would ever use it is beyond me.

Also by making the type too lined up, structured and uniform can give it too new an appearance, if you look at the old labels, the layout of a lot of the type was very random and rough in a lot of cases.

Just a few thoughts, that's all. :lol:

Univers was the most common font family used by US record label printers when they used those Varitype machines for setting. Another common one was Franklin Gothic and variants of it.

By the 1980s Helvetica fonts were quite common.

The secret today is the horizontal scale and tracking and, as Roger said, avoiding being too uniform.

And in most cases they only used two or three different font sizes on each design.

Now THIS is what DJs should be playing if they have an open mind. My GOD, this is mindblowing. The best new record of someone else's that I have heard for years. It put all the Sharon Jones stuff in the shade. STUNNING AND AWESOME.

I know nothing about this record. Can someone please please fill me in on who is behind it, PLEASE.

BEST NEW RECORD (THAT I DIDN'T PRODUCE) FOR TEN YEARS (That's not meant to sound arrogant, it's just that for obvious reasons, I do like my stuff). But THIS gives me goosebumps.

man forgot how good this is after watching the clip i had to pul out the 45 and give it a spin now this is what soul music should be about making you feel good making you fee totally alive. dont know which i prefer most now the 45 or your reworking of it ian as its just as good. roll on the dvd cant wait

ian no thanks needed in fact it should be me thanking you for still having the balls to go out and produce fantastic soul music .freda payne fay jones nat augustin etc should be getting plays at clubs as they are awesome soul records.i know the old argument that there is loads of underplayed 60s/70s tunes out there and people should be playing this why not both?when you concider that crap like duffy and frank popp get played yet real soul like the above is ignored then it is crimminal.
