Ok so I have been going to all-nighters and soul do's for a few years now and I just wanted to see what people think of younger people on the scene?

I am 21 years old and have been into it for about 3 or so years now. I started of going with a mate the same age as me but he moved away so i go with people much older.

I will be honest and admit i do somtimes have people look at me strange and I have had people ask me "should you not be in bed" "does ur mummy know your out etc." This is not everyone just a small few.

Do people think it is strange someone so young is into northern soul with all older people? Have people forgot they were young when they were into it? How can we get more youngester in the scene?

Do what you want mate if people don't accept you because of your age then it's thier minds that are poluted with rubbish not your's you wont get any more young people to go unless they like it I'd get them to a few more upfront modern nights a good place is the alternative room at the Rolls Royce dayers in Derby (next week )as the music may have an afinity with the music they may be familular with .I doubt whether any one should find it strange that any one should want to be anywhere that they choose despite how old they are and regarding any stupid remarks like "does your mummy know your out ?" ask them if thiers does this will either confuse them or hurt them as thier mother is probably dead.the main thing to remember young man is that you are a free human being and as long as it hurts no one do what the f**k you like.Regards Simon.

TBH you and your young compatriots are the ones who will ensure longevity of a pretty unique "scene", no two ways about it

Was'nt a lot of us going to niters at the age of 15-16 , maybe even younger . No problem here , except for kids that is.

I think looking at the average age of Northern punters at nighters is misleading in some ways, loads of ex punters from the 8ts and 9ts are off the scene at the moment, having kids and building lives. hence the gap between the young guys in there teens and twenties and the older wiganites in there fifties.

Reckon its always been something of an issue-some of the older people,in every phase of the scene, have(and always have had)a superiority complex.We was all young once and we`ve all had to start somewhere,just be grateful you don`t have the spectre of the Casino to be blighted with.

Good call. I went to an all-nighter at Jacks near London bridge in December 2006. There were lots of young folk there.

I don't think it's strange thfcliam. I expect the insults are born through envy of your young years or through trying to be funnAy The only advice I can give is that you should not worry one iota what anyone thinks - I believe that's the true spirit of soul regardless of what anyone says.

My Daughter's only 16 but has been coming to allnighters for a number of years now. She's not like me who lives and breaths it and she has other likes and loves but she does love soul and loves the whole ethos that comes with it. She says she's never felt uneasy or threatened and found it a freeing experience.

Kudos to you, and without wishing to sound patronising, I'm so glad there are youngsters that can hear for real the perfect brilliance in music made so long ago. It's a calling for sure

This topic of youth keeps coming up, nothing more really to do maybe, plenty of mixed soul events in all our towns and cities, some will find it, love it and stick with it, just like we did many moons ago.. Not sure what type of event you like Liam??? i as a youngster would be looking for an event that is to my taste and as a good ammount of like minded younger crowd, if that means putting in some milage then so be it, many of us have seen distance no object in search for our real soul....

this debate does crop up a lot.

if you like the music and the scene stick at it and find your way it will be an interesting journe. Some clubs you will like and others you won't.

for me its one of the only true underground scenes.

The other side to it is the money, 12 or so under 25's on Saturday night probably brought into the club and bar around £500 if not more. {just a rough estimate never had a head count} what's your alternative - 1 you have to have gone to The Mecca, Wigan, Stafford to be accepted. 2 over 30 ts and a printed hand out booklet of doo's and dont's (funny I never got one at Wigan] but times are changing. Get on with it its a night out!

liam i was introduced to northern soul at the age of 16 in the mid 70,s as northern was exploding everywhere and all the youth clubs was banging out the music in my area , i guess that would of been pretty much the same everywhere else? by time id reached 19 there were soulies as young as 14 out there having a good time,ok it was the fad at the time but a fair few have stayed loyal to the scene.Although im now a grandad i have many young friends on the scene who i respect as much as people ive known from day one,if youre looking to make friends with soulies of youre own age group i,ll gladly put you in contact with a few.There seems to be a young following from london and theyre a great crowd.The scene deffinately needs fresh blood to keep the legacy going,enjoy youreself and rise above any negative comments, welcome aboard....ktf tommo.

Don't worry mate they're all sad bastards with "narrow views" the same crowd that are probably "oldies only". If you want a great weekend, with quality northern, full of open minds, chock full of youngsters then get yourself off to the Seattle WA (November) You'll have a brilliant time.

Get lots of younger people at the wheel theyre always made to feel welcome by us oldies!

The last Friday do in July an 18year d couple were at their first ever soul night they could not beleive all those 50 + bopping the night away

After a couple of beers they were up on the floor until the place closed

They loved it even though the wheel plays just oldies I suppose that all the tunes were new to these guys

Go to different venues if you love the music there's only a small minority that arnt welcoming!!

Didnt see it ,but have a good idea who/what you mean.It was far out weighed by the international bright young things in attendance.

Hi Liam you're not alone. I met a 15 year old lad at the Zen Bar in Southport and he was very enthusiastic about northern soul and a good, neat dancer. It was great to see him enjoying himself. I'm all in favour of mixed generational soul nights - so more power to you.

There's one or two night's popping up run by some of the younger crowd & the ones I've been to are great.I really enjoy there energy & enthusiasm & love to hear them talking passionately about the music (& not about price & rarity).

The thing I think us older ones should be careful of is talking down to them,no one in any walk of life likes that so why would it be OK on the soul scene.I think we shouldn't try to make them in our image they should mould the scene into what works for them & we should not force them into making the same mistakes we have over the years with the back biting & divisions.Hopefully they'll evolve it into there scene & keep it going for many years to come.

I just used the 25-40 bracket to mean the immense majority, there are of course 40 somethings, but those over 45 seem mostly to be small groups of visiting brits, who are always made most welcome of course.

Get yourself up to Driving Beat in Leeds on October 15th - top mix of 'old' and young (shameless plug i know), or the likes of Empty Bottles, Beat Boutique, Crossfire etc.

However, don't let those comments made by the narrow minded put you off, or even make you think you need to attend mixed/predominantly younger crowd events. Niters & nights that offer great music usually attract great people. Just ignore the div's.

Youngsters on the scene i think it's great i always have a chat with Azza (LilJimmyCrank ) about the alphabet spaghetti he had for tea and this weeks copy of 'Whizzer & Chips'

loads of youngsters in the camber sands scooter rally soul room ...and down in bristol at go go children,more and more in 'mod' attire makin the right dance moves but not all,some are just into great music and a good night out...

Well I'm 29 I'll be 30 this year I've been in to the scene nearly 15 years now and when I first started I only had words of encouragement. And never any slagging down these people who say these things to you its just pure jealousy because your young and there old f*$k em pal.

Bloody hell, what goes round comes round....remember going to Wigan Casino, the one and only time, I was under going self inflicted rehab, anyway this was July 1976, Soulcarp, who lived in Stoney Stratford at the time came up with me.

Anyway, my point is, I was 27 at the time and the boot was on the other foot, I'm looking at, what to me, were all these little kids of 17/18, and I felt like an old man !!!!! Note that I had not been to a nighter for about 3 or 4 years at the time as I'd got into a different drugs culture life style...still love Jimmie Hendricks, Doors, Starship, Pink Flloyd etc etc

If its any consoloation I went to the Wilby reunion last month and thought should old fuckers our age still be trying stunts like this , anyone seen that Lenny Henry film with a mobile disco they run round in an ice cream van, someone must have seen the future when they made that, and its like a lot of things ,

the NS scene especially, that withoutout young blood coming through the scene is going to die,

SO, YOU GET AS MANY OF YOUR MATES INTO IT AS YOU CAN, AND IGNORE ALL THE LOOKS/REMARKS. :yes: :yes:

Obviously my mates I go with are much older than me and I do somtimes go to "do's" with my dad (he wont go to nighters anymore ha)and it is great to talk to older people who have intresting stories of when they were young, going etc. As I said I get along with most, it is just a small few I have noticed and wanted to see people opinons on this.

I do admit somtimes I do wish there were more young people on the scene, that is why I started this thread really. Anyway I am looking forward to Derby allnighter,

Beware these actions could seriously back fire

Twisted wheel last night (26th august) four younger people came ip from london 3 girls 1 guy

They looked really smart and alll of them were good dancers they were made to feel welcome by us crinklies think and hope that they had a

really good time said that they hope to come to

the next Sunday session would love some feedback from them on here

So like I said in an earlier reply ignore the stupid

bigots who basically think that you have to have been into the soul scene for 45 years keep going to soul nights cos without you younger guys the scene will wither and die!

Well my view on the younger crowd attending Soul venues is this..{its like a breath of fresh air to see them}.

There enjoying the music that is ageless un like many forms of music over the years that although grt fun

and enjoyment at the time just seemes to fade away on the popular scene.The younger crowd look

smart and trendy they do give give a venue a face lift that the older crowed could do with. There are some very fine

dancers among them they have got rhythm and soul Casie comes to mind she's mordern mod in her look lovely dancer

and attends venues from the 100 Club to the Wheel .. Wot else could we ask for to fly the flag long after we have gone.

And to sum up one of the bests sets played at Burnley last time was by young Callum a lad with an ere for gud dance music.

And some one to lead the way for our younger Soul brothers and sisters.
