Some tunes, back in the day, used to be massive, then over and done with very quickly and seem to get lost forever.

A few examples:

Cal Tjader - Soul Sauce

Black Soul Music - Black Soul

Mack Simmons - Turning Point

Attractions - Mammas Baby

Cant say I've heard any of these at a soul night in 30 years.

Any others deserve a mention?

Ed

  • are we you may be missing the point, those records were monsters but the topic is records that were played once or twice then forgotten isn't it? Or not. I dunno.

  • That Uniques was getting spun in London 2001/2002 by Jo Wallace quite a lot.I'm sure they were a garage band and from memory came out on UK Pye?

Few More

Little Joe Roman "When Your Lonesome"

First Choice "This is House Where Love Died"

Mylestones "Sexy Lady"

The Moods "Rainmaker"

Black Nasty " Cut Your Motor Off"

Big Boris "Devils Drive"

Some you never hear out but must have been big at one point as they were pressed.

Bobbi Lynne-Jump Back In The Arms Of Love

Was it pressed as a white label with a narrow runout? Had it for years and was always suspicious but haven't seen it in any guide?

First choice, my alltime favorite group, Rochelle Flemming is unbelieveable, and 'this is the house' still get regualr airings IMO

atorch spin I'm informed..

Bull + El Capralas? Girl of my heart Bell. Big at Cleethorpes for a couple of weeks then tons turned up, not heard it since then

I had a tape I'd done at Wigan one saturday night, (big tunes were John Leech, Burning Bush etc) and Searling played a tune he introduced as "carlotta - Lies" - that night was the only time I heard it, and I didn't miss many saturday nights at all.

it was a cover up, but I never bothered to find out who/what it really was, just seem to remember someone saying it was really rare when it cropped up in a conversation while listening to the aforementioned tape a couple of years later.

Anyone remember it, or know what it was/is?

Pete Smith probably has a copy of the tape somewhere, so could maybe identify it.

It did come out, I think it's Carletta or Charletta, not sure if it was a one off or a real record, then a version came out on a bootleg as 'Gwen Owens'. That's all I know about this one I'm afraid

Prob one of the biggest things to come out of Wigan and forgot never hear it

Construction-Hey little way out girl

Cheers Pete, if refo soul was up and running i could have looked for a sound clip......

Cheers guys, it's something that's always bugged me (well, every 10 years or so when it pops into my mind!)

Has it ever been issued on a CD/LP? Was the gwen owens boot a different version or just a covered up boot of the unissued sussex track?

I thought the question was about tunes that went big very quickly, then disappeared just as quick...

Maybe I'm wrong too :D

Tony

This was the point exactly. Records which seemed to be massive for a few weeks then disappeard as opposed to the evergreens that get revived quite often. Frankie Love Man Crocker would be an evergreen, Mack Simmons would be a 'forotten oldie'.

Of course they are not really 'forgotten', just maybe ready for more exposure so we avoid the 'constant 600' so to speak.

Soul Sauce absolutely packed the floor at the KGB Sheffield, Black Soul at Cleethorpes etc etc, and a few mentioned on here about Wigan. I was looking for others to mention other tunes they felt the same way about, perhaps records they liked but look like they faded away!

Rotations - A changed man

Big at Wigan but haven't heard it out for over 30 years.

Teen Turbans - We Need to Be Love.

I remember when I was desperate for a copy as a wide eyed teenager around 1976. Not really meaty enough sounding for today I suspect.

I play both sides of Billy Hambric, Dave Raistrick played it of late as well. Jackie Beavers and Tamala Lewis both get plays, Construction can't remember last time I heard it.

Plenty on this topic I thought were in the "classic northern" category, not forgotten?

Construction tamala lewis both regular spins for me,and a few others in these parts [northwest].Good few mentioned in this thread hear very regularly first choice black nasty etc, suppose its all down to were you live.

Your spins are sort of the exception to rule as far as this thread goes really though, Mark. In fact I'll be surprised if this topic doesn't end up looking like one your set lists :D

I believe this was a big Mecca spin for about a week....great double sider and in the box.

jackie b and tamala lewis is probably down to rarity, more then them being unfasionable.

Spooky, playing it now at home!

Boogie kings - i got your number - paula, one minute there next gone

Lots of records given brief spins at the Casino, then dropped due to being booted so many good tunes around the Dj's could afford to drop them, doesn't happen these days, if anything it makes the record a bigger spin.

Attractions "Mamma's Baby" a very today record especially if you like funky northern, I've recently put back in my play box.

What about

The Beas-Where do i go from you ? don´t even remember hearing it before it got booted!!

Steve

I heard it twice I think and caught both plays on tape, second tape is the night Archie Bell was on, something like June 3rd 77, played as The Tiffanies I think

On one of the "live Wigan" recordings, from mid 74, that Pete S put up, there was all the usual stuff of the time , Tainted Love, Footsee, mirwood instrumentals, the Javells, and everything else that we've all heard a million times. Then there is a track by, I think, Kenny Ballard. Don't remember it at the time, and not heard it since. What happened there then. Compared to some of the stuff, it souded OK.

Paul

Kenny Ballard and the Fabulous Soul Brothers - I'm Losing You - Roulette R4716 - can get one for £20-£30

Definitely Kenny Ballard but I don't think it's on the tape with Footsee etc, must be a different one I posted up

how about, the 4 vandals, Venicia Wilson, Linda Lloyd and a host of others that a certain unmentionable was playing around ooooooh, ten years ago?

A similar time, this was played everywhere (well everywhere I seemed to go to at the time  ), never heard since!

https://youtu.be/N4I5YLG0szc

Dunno Pete how would we know if it was only played once unless at oNe venue you attended every week :) certainly the first post states cal tjader, heard that out quite a lot back in the day and many a time since, never heard of matt simmons or earnest fitzgerald so they may have been one-offs I guess? (can name a few records - some so-called big 'uns of today that showuldve been one-plays  maybe another post there.

As far as I am aware Soul Source was played in the very early 70,s (Torch etc.) and even generated a reissue on verve. The original plays were because of the UK Verve release followed later by its subsequent revisit (oldies) around 78 time. It was also used as a backing theme to a children's BBC programme (can't remember the name) that my kids watched in the 90's.

Regards

Surely not where you live but venues attended? Records that were played at Yate and very big there at the time were not discovered by the majority until the late 80,s early 90's. In the 70,s they would be localised biggies

Definitely Kenny Ballard but I don't think it's on the tape with Footsee etc, must be a different one I posted up

It's on a CD someone did of the night. It's played between Eddie & Ernie, and The Montclairs. Possibly it is 2 different "live" recordings put onto one CD.

Paul

Some records I only ever remember hearing once at Wigan:

john gary - hang on to me

john andrews - it's just love

jacki bond - why can't i love him

prince ella & sidney jones - baby sugar i love you

blue chips - tell him

barry st john - everything i touch turns to tears

probably hundreds more

steady part of my dj box

Twans - cant remember the last time i heard that out!

Lesley Uggams - both of them

Paula Durante - If He Were Mine

Al de Lory - Right On

Margaret Mandolph - Something Beautiful

Frankie Crocker

ete etc

All biggies once...There's hundreds more like this....dunno maybe they get played at torch reunions/twisted wheel sessions so would never know no.gif

played margaret mandolph at the recent Hamburg Soulweekender as an ender of my first set of the night. love it.

frankie crocker had a massive revival some good two/three years ago.

Jimmy Gresham This Feeling I Have Terri De

I think it was played once at the casino by RS then disappeared.

Still only a handfull of copys known and oh so good.

jimmy gresham has been a part of most of butch`s sets during the last copule of years. rarity indeed seems to be the reason why not more djs are playing it out. me for example I lost out on two copies on ebay during the last ten years...the last at only 1600 USD sth frusty2.gif

I believe this was a big Mecca spin for about a week....great double sider and in the box.

The Voice Box got played for more than a week at the Mecca. lol.

Also got played at Wigan when it 1st opened as well.

P.S. Like you said good double sider.
