Instant Monster - Then Forgot About

Recommended Posts

Some tunes, back in the day, used to be massive, then over and done with very quickly and seem to get lost forever.

A few examples:

Cal Tjader - Soul Sauce

Black Soul Music - Black Soul

Mack Simmons - Turning Point

Attractions - Mammas Baby

Cant say I've heard any of these at a soul night in 30 years.

Any others deserve a mention?

are we you may be missing the point, those records were monsters but the topic is records that were played once or twice then forgotten isn't it? Or not. I dunno.

Dunno Pete how would we know if it was only played once unless at oNe venue you attended every week :) certainly the first post states cal tjader, heard that out quite a lot back in the day and many a time since, never heard of matt simmons or earnest fitzgerald so they may have been one-offs I guess? (can name a few records - some so-called big 'uns of today that showuldve been one-plays  maybe another post there.

Well yeah we did attend Wigan every week, thats why I listed ones that I'd only heard there once. Well no I went every 2 weeks in 76, 3 out of every 4 in 77 and every single week in 78 up til august.

Does the fact that a 45 might have been played only once or twice at the Wigan Casino make it 'forgotten'? I don't think so.

Anyone got the comprehensive list of every track played at every venue, large and small, national, local and parochial, across all the years? Of course not.

So, the question is then: forgotten by whom?

Seems the answer is only old timers who went to clubs that existed for a few short years and closed their doors - how long ago?

Let's have some criteria to define 'forgotten' before the usual statements of "When I was at the [insert name of decades dead venue here]..."

Which is usually followed by the lonesome cry along the lines of: "...it's not like the old days..."

I thought the question was about tunes that went big very quickly, then disappeared just as quick...

Maybe I'm wrong too :D

You could always try actually reading the question. Played for a few weeks then disappears. As Wigan casino was the venue I attended, thats the one that I can relate my experiences of.

Yes, but 'Wigan' features in this threat seven times and 'Casino' eight times. Sorry, make that eight and nine times respectively

I know but if I'd spent most of my time at the 100 Club, I'd namecheck that place - I can only go by where I've been and what I've heard (or not heard)(again)(ever)

Got the black soul music and just bought a copy of mamma'a little baby, was wondering if they'd been played, when and where these two first aired? i think I'm right in saying soul saurce was a wheel thing though I know it was also spun at the golden torch too.

Been spinning this again.....someone on here actually requested it at our last gig.

Some you never hear out but must have been big at one point as they were pressed.

Bobbi Lynne-Jump Back In The Arms Of Love

Marsha Brody-Right Combination

Edie Walker -Good Guys

Carlettes/Corlettes-Im Getting Tired....I'm spinning this again

Joey Dee-How Can I Forget

Cortez Greer-Strong On You...in the box

I've got that Attractions Mammas Baby record somewhere....blue label springs to mind.Gave it one or two spins then filed it.Thought it was a poor record.....will give it another try.

From that lot, the Joey Dee was a truly massive record in early 76, bootlegged twice in fact, one of the biggest records of that year.

I think you will find that Leslie Uggams went big in 76 covered up as Nancy Ames.

Lyndia Marcelle got pressed in late 76/ early 77, both great records in there day and I still like them.

Cortez Greer is a fine record, and the other side is quite passable too, price started going up this last year or so too. The only thing it has against it is it was one of my first wifes favourite records (and still is), I still have a copy and would play it out. There's a version by someone else on a UK label too I seem to remember

Was still going strong in 77, the tape I did Feb 12th 77, goes down well on there. Lydia Marcelle was a very rare play from what I can remember. Great though.

I can't remember ever hearing "Mama's Baby" anywhere. Not that great a record IMO anyway....

Likewise these two.....

Bobbi Lynn - Jump Back In The Arms Of Love

Marsha Brody-Right Combination

They were around in droves but I can honestly say I can't remember ever hearing 'em out anywhere. The Bobbi Lynn's were virtually all water damaged from memory. I always remember wondering why there were gazillions of water-damaged Bobbi Lynn's on Look but no Freddy Chavez's anywhere!

couple of thing I remember from the 8ts,

Joe Stampley/ uniques- not too long ago

and

Anita Hulmes - what will I do

Think the Anita Hulmes was a stafford track but was certainly a big spin around 87 for a while.

That Uniques was getting spun in London 2001/2002 by Jo Wallace quite a lot.I'm sure they were a garage band and from memory came out on UK Pye?

I didn't know that, I didn't even hear it til 1988

I'd heard it when I was going out with Colleen, Steve Fay had a copy too. Maybe it was one of those things that was played very briefly then disappeared for a while
