MARTHA REEVES AND THE VANDELLAS....My all time favourite Motown LP only track....a truly fantastic piece of 60s Girly/Femme Soul....This thread - and it could go on for a long time yet - shows exactly what a treasure trove of tracks there are sitting on these albums and the vast majority of the dancers never celebrated on our scene simply because they don't measure 7 inches...What a sad case of neglect... :hatsoff2:

Now there's always been room on the scene for a great "pop" tune, so here's my favourite from The Original's "portrait" album.

However I guess that the Soul police will be straight on it.

Best instrumental from the San Remo Swings album, Lonely One by the San Remo Strings:

The melody sounds a bit like "you gave me somebody to love".

Overlooked by many from the Prime of LP, Shorty Long "I wish you were here":

Comments welcome.

Nice, but a bit lounge for me.

Found the LP a bit of a disappointment.

Great voice though!

Rich, what LP is this on, love this track.

Barry

Here's a few more for the list -

4 Tops - "Can't Seem To Get You Out Of My Mind" from "Yesterday's Dreams"

You may not be aware that this actually got a 45 release in the UK (At least) as the flip to "Do what you gotta do"

Nice thread guys!

Speaking of Pop tunes,

Quite partial to David Ruffin's version of Everlasting Love..

Feel quite inspired to spin a few of these early doors at Steve's birthday do on Friday.

It's on 'WATCHOUT' mate and it's also on the MFP cheapo 'Dancing in the Street' along with the brilliant 'No more tearstained make up' which ROD has already highlighted etc...

Can't quite recall but there is an e.p from the 'Breakout' album and I think it features on that too, along with 'make-up' and 'I will follow' or am I having a delusion, it does happen now and again...same cover as the album but 7 inch....Can somebody confirm that? :hatsoff2:

Edwin Starr.- I Cant Escape Your Memory. War And Peace lp

James Dean and William Wetherspoon had so many of their great works relegated to LP only. (Or even more criminal, unissued!!)

Rosalind Chuck Jackson

Just Before Love Ends Jimmy Ruffin

Reaching For Something I Can't Have The Marvelettes (Did get a UK release I know)

Can't Stop Now (Love Is Calling) Tammi Terrell

Glad I can raise a smile constable!

the originals doing sunshine pop was amusing

Anyway by far the best version of Born to love You, from the same MFP album as My Love is Your love; The Isleys "Born to Love You" :

Edited by Mick Sway

Also from the Love Child LP:

Fans do go to a lot of trouble with these excellent Youtube postings.

PS Following the demand created at The Torch and Cats, Tell Me It's Just A Rumer was released in the UK on a 45, though it was originally played from LP I believe.

Edited by Mick Sway

Heaven Sent You I Know - Marvin & Kim (Black Country theme, an ender now spun in memorium of souls "in the upstairs room" )

there's lots more yet....

This is brilliant - never heard it before - top top stuff !!!!

Have got all of the MFP motown albums (I think).

I really must sit down and play them all again fairly soon.

Knew there was unreleased stuff on them, but had forgotten how good some of it is.

Unless my taste is changing, now I am getting old :D

Ian

There's this from Marvelettes which was massive back in '73 or so

Or this from Temptations

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiT4oiVMbi4

No YT clips of these but can recommend Chris Clark "Born to love you baby" which is similar in feel to McNair's "You're gonna love my baby". Also Isleys "Trouble" off that Regal-Starline LP. May be on "Behind a painted Smile" LP too. Not sure as don't have a copy.

ROD

gladys knight,"aint you glad you chose love",from the feeling bluesy lp...

no clip on youtube but the miracles minus smokey on the do it baby lp,"Can't Get Ready For Losing You"...

great thread, its seems like a bottomless pit,

some these already mentioned but all are amazing to these ears

Shorty long- baby come on home to me

kiki dee- I'll try something new

supremes- cant stop a girl in love

originals- dont stop now

originals- I got a need for you

Kim Weston - You hit me (Right where it hurt me), Best version by far imo.

Anyone know what album this came out on? or is it just the 'Anthology'?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v86WgMdP-zE

From a CD, could be the anthology or cellar full of motown.

See Ian Levine's You Tube post for more details and images of Kim from the Strange World DVD:

King Floyd - Take The Place Of A Dying Man - (V.I.P 'Heart Of The Matter')

Soupy Sales - Teach Your Baby How To Dance / Come To Baby Do (Motown 'A Bag Of Soup')

I put these in the 'Releases from around the world' thread. Unfortunately they are poor grade vinyl, play terrible but look nice.

Just wondering, is the poor grade vinyl etc comments referring to all the Phillippines Motown 45s in general, or just these mentioned?

I know Smokey Robinson & The Miracles "Flying high together" was also released there (So can't be included here) - was that a 'bad' one also?

The Smokey Robinson 45 is a lot better than the earlier yellow Motown issues. I bought about a dozen different ones and most were unplayed but sound rough. I'd say they are like some of the poor sounding Jamaican pressed 45s. I got some Capitol and A&M releases too and they are better than the Motown ones but still not perfect.

According to DFTMC Baby Hit & Run was unissued until TMG 886 Feb 1974. It was also on the Mfp album May 1974.

I always liked their version of It's Growing on that Mfp album. An improvement on the Temps version IMO
