    I listened to the full show whilst driving to and from London this afternoon..... and I have to say that the return journey's listening was just a tad better than that suffered during the outward jour

when did number 2 come out? I know he rubs allot of folk up the wrong way, but I have to say, I love these pod casts, they are great. He makes you cringe from time to time overstating stuff, but no fear, he has none what so ever, and I love that.

can I download them, as apposed to play them on here?

Toll Darkness has been played for at least 15 years now.....Fred Mark also an old Tim Brown tip. Same tune, but slightly different backing track as I recall (Lisa Mae sounds the same as Toll Darkness) so they used it three times at least - will need to dig em all out to check. B side of Toll Darkness a cracking stepper too as you know!

I seem to have missed number two somehow :unsure:

Anyway I've download two and three and will listen next week when I get them on the iPod unless I get the chance earlier.

Sounds like Ian is using the same researcher he used in podcast number one.

My fave track of the podcast was Al Danner. Some modern soul/ cross-over tracks sound fantastic. Others just don't do it for me.

And to quote the man: instead of listening to what dross the radio has to offer, get out and find records that are 30 years old, that no-one has ever heard of before (mainstream) and enjoy 'em... Too right!

Sorry folks, but whilst there are some pleasant and left-field tunes, there is some absolute pants in there. What is that ridiculous 'Colin Safalou' crap about 30 minutes in??!!! He must surely be extracting the urine and testing folk to see who picks up on the joke. It is shockingly poor on all levels and sounds like a Pop Idol reject pulled off the street to sing something composed by one of Harry Hill's script writers. But then he always prefaces these things with 'you either love it or hate it'. Come on.

just listened to podcast 2 and he says Ilana is an amazing unknown rare record, can't really take the guy seriously with talk like that. If i wanna hear rare stuff and knowledgeable people there's nothing better than soul people on a Sunday morning.

Yes I agree - a bit disappointing- some good well known records like Al Danner and Danny Bell but some strange non Soul choices. I wanted to enjoy this podcast as I have great respect for Ian Levine in terms of his past discoveries and also for the SWONS but a lot of tunes on here weren't for me I'm afraid.

If you blind buy ~1000 45s a month (especially a lot of records that other people didn't care enough to bid on or buy), you're bound to find some good cuts as well as some crappy cuts that you need to play to justify the purchases.

Ian asked me about the Spy_dells record a few weeks back and I said I'd never heard of it, lo and behold someone sent me a track listing of a podcast I did in 2010 where I actually play the record, and I mean play it as opposed to nick it off a tape or a cd. So that must have gone on one of my lists as an unknown - it's followed by another record I don't remember - no idea what it is

I love the 60's stuff but have to agree about there being some very odd records on there being touted as Northern Soul. And crossover is junk no matter who's playing it.

Such is the need to come up with something new I guess, it aint easy unless you have an ongoing relationship with a major labels back catalog, you never know he may inadvertently break some news type sounds while he's piling through unknowns, I know I've chased a couple things I've heard, but he is stretching it into MOR and the plain weird in some cases.

Now he's on volume 3, I cant help remembering a comment Ted Massey made, when his first was put up, he said its not very Now, or words to that effect, well after a bit it becomes now doesn't it? were all talking about these pod casts, Ian did the 100 club, so he may not have the Arthur Willis and the soulful dynamics record, which is over a decade old now anyway, but he is stirring things up which can only be a good thing..

I go along with most of what you say Pete, But Crossover is not Junk!! You need to be in your car with the sun roof down, Gurning about how sunny it is to fully appreciate it, I guess the sun doesn't ever shine Wombourne.. :boxing:

I hope it doesnt become now and some how listening the no 3 theres no chance, i thought there was some nice things on there but all erring to the 70's and a lot of white sounding vocals almost C&W imo

Did he not know that Gene Pharr on Sandollar(an excellent record by the way) is a cover version of Bobby Womack on Minit? etc, etc

It always amazes me how people like Levine are nowhere to be found when the scene is in the doldrums but as soon as it's popular again and a few radio and TV camera's are about, out they come and jump straight back on the bandwagon with their ego's at full throttle.

Knowledge is a wonderful thing and you find out alot more by listening, than drowning people out with the sound of your own voice.

It's a good point because you only have to be away from the scene for 3 months and you miss an awful lot of records. Go away for several years and you can never really catch up. Believe me I have told Ian many times that certain records are already known. Ian didn't play Out On The Streets Again though.

I listened to the full show whilst driving to and from London this afternoon..... and I have to say that the return journey's listening was just a tad better than that suffered during the outward journey. Ian's take on what constitutes 'Northern Soul' leaves a great deal to be desired, as does his understanding of what records can genuinely be considered as 'unknown'. For sure there were some tracks included that I'd never heard before, but quite frankly I wouldn't want to hear them ever again, given that they were in the main a mix of middle of the road pop and pop/country trash. Some of these records Ian was describing as the best he's ever had, which given the tunes he played at his Mecca peak, seemed to be quite a desperate attempt to convince himself and listeners of a quality that was clearly missing

There were some great records played too, but they were fairly well known, and as Dave said, his absence from the scene has caused a significant gap in his knowledge of the music played between '76 and today. It was frustrating to hear him constantly banging on about his play list being unknown, and his comments of amazement that these 'unknown' records had remained unknown until now. His 'upto to 4 figure' 70's tunes were all quality records, but very well known, and might just have amounted to 4 figures when added together.

He really needs to get his feet on the ground to appreciate that the scene wasn't placed on hold until he reappeared.

In between the medioca were one or two good tracks but you could hear the barrel being scraped

Not trying to pile on the hating, but maybe some due diligence on claiming a record is unknown would include a google and popsike search. If nothing turns up, it's still doesn't prove it's unknown, but if it's good it's at best only known by a small circle of people who aren't giving up the info so it is close to unknown.
