I'm not really a cd man myself, but I do think that a good cd would be a nice stocking filler for my relatives. Problem is I'm completely clueless but I'm sure there's a few members of this board that can put me in the right direction. Anyone?

If you are after Northern the After Hours CD' s are pretty good 1,2,and 3, or you can now get all three in a box set on Amazon for 14 quid,  lots of stuff out there, beware  of re recordings on some of the cheaper box sets available

Sainburys have a great 2 CD set of oldies for £3......fantastic value, good playlist.....

One that's proved itself in my car over a few years is Chess Northern Soul: Marlena Shaw and Ramsey Lewis, Dells, Terry Callier, Valentinos, Mamie Galore, Radiants, Fontella Bass, Gospel Classics, Tony Clark, Little Milton, and others

Always liked Goldmine's Allnighter series (1-5), especially 1 which is a fantastic selection - Nolan Porter 'If I could', Kenny Wells 'Isn't it just a shame', George Freeman 'Down and out', Jimmy 'Bo' Horne 'Just can't speak', etc - really a top class CD  

Millions to choose from, maybe best tell us what your relative likes??? Soul is a very broad church on this forum.... As stated above, Kent selections with the inner sleeve notes are something special.. For me its The Dave Goddin deep soul vol 1 to 4... A real passion of this thing called soul...

The southern soul CDs 1-3 on ace are effing amazing,

Not always a big fan of the goldmine stuff unless it was the detroit stuff, but boy could they put a deep soul cd out,top marks for them.

Obviously the Dave godin albums,

The tommy Tate on pvine excellent.

Not a big player of CDs I tend to put them on IPod and leave them in the corner, more interested in the sleeve notes,it'd be a perfect world if downloads gave you the liner notes too,and if APOEL won the champions league.

To answer your question Stevie, my relatives are not really into the music and certainly not into one aspect of it, I'd just like to give them some top music that they haven't heard before.

Goldmine do/did a series based on famous clubs, Mecca, Torch, Wheel etc, well worth hunting down. You can pick them up on Ebay, new at about £3 - 4.00 each.

Amazon are currently selling a double CD and DVD box set for £5.  The DVD features the short film Function at the Junction and the documentary Way of the Crowd.

You'll struggle to beat the quality and value of Ian D's Backbeat series - great soul music.

I must have 100+ northern cds mostly goldmine/kent,but I bought them years ago when they were coming out like what seemed like weekly...I haven't bought any since.apart from  2cds with all the kapp releases.

 

they just seemed to of just stopped dead back then & the odd ones coming out was stuff I had on all there other cds,apart from 1 or 2 tracks I didn't have.they had to be the ones youd buy the cd for,lol.but didn't see the point of buying for the odd record.

 

I know there is a few good ones that have came out..but was it a case of they had put out all the ones they had the rights to & now have run out of tracks they can put out,seems to be mostly from the vaults/un released stuff.

 

I could be wrong as I havnt looked @ any new ones in years,apart from adys pied piper cd.

 

I have all the great records in my memory,so I can pick & sing to them any time I want,lol...a walking living juke box,lol

Dave - on reflection, you need to grab any of the cheapest compilations still available in the shops, usually priced at £5- £10; these are generally compilations of the best of compilations if that makes sense ie good, old established tunes that could be accessible to someone not on the scene. The Torch, Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca series of CD's are still available and are well worth a close look.

The troops have done a fine job of identifying the very best CD's released over the last 10-15 years but these will probably only be available second hand on Amazon or eBay.

I visited the new HMV store on Oxford Street yesterday and there were virtually no Northern Soul CD's there; there were a few more in the larger HMV store but really only the remnants of what has been a 20 year production line of decent releases. It looks as though the CD business has almost run it's course so I would urge anyone seeking decent music, to sweep the shelves clear of the last few...

Thanks for all the tips guys! I bought a few Kent ones in the end, because of the sound quality + the liner notes. Think I'll stick to vinyl myself, but I now know which presents my family members will be getting for the next 30 years.
