Blimey O'Reilly, Such passions for tunes that people don't like. Might as well have my tuppence worth.

Apologies to all Palace and Blackpool FC fans but really didn't rate this back in the day or tomorrow for that matter.  There's a version by Kenny Bernard that hasn't even made it to You Tube which ain't great.

Sorry everyone, the topic was the most hated tune, not necessarily the worst tune.

Al Wilson and the snake is indeed an all time classic, and as I pointed out, between 14 and 16 it was a big record, but then it got hijacked and commercialised and even copied on TV talent shows etc.

So now when I hear it, it's like fingernails down a blackboard. I'm not disputing it's place in history etc, and I've owned a reissue as a teeny boppa.

There must be a track that does this to you!

I'd hazard a guess that if you asked around the scene, and although I wholeheartedly don't hate it at all, the answer would indeed be 'The Snake' whenever I see it mentioned it's in a derogatory way and when people want to take the pee out of an event or a person or group of people it's 'The Snake' that is always seem to be the track named. That's why I said what I did about it earlier. I think the answer was given in post 1, Ed.

Personally for me I love 'The Snake' and have admitted it and would do again, I don't hate or even particularly dislike intensely any record in particular, there are groups of records I dislike somewhat (synthesised handclaps etc) but that is more of a type specific thing. In a setting outside of 'Soul' I like that kind of music, just don't count it in as 'Soul'.

It's quite an insightful, subjective discussion though.

Once popular - any DJ that plays this today deserves to get twatted... I also have an intense personal dislike of Doug Banks and Romance Watson.

On a slightly different note, why do I love records like William Powell and Margare Little? Because they ain't perfect vocals and might sound a bit dodgy. But it's that quirkiness and mystique that to me makes them the ideal "niter" records

I wonder what impression anyone arriving at Soul Source for the first time would receive this thread, on a website that promotes soul music! Not only the comments about the music but also the disrespect and unkindness about a major soul artist who is still alive and performing and who may well look at soul source. This is not a great advert for the soul scene, if you are already tired of these records why mention them again and inflict your misery on everyone else!

I've personally admitted having a copy of the snake, and danced to it a thousand times.

But for me, now, when I hear it, I loathe it!

In 2017, in Detroit,  I heard Spyder Turner stating he never really liked I C T I A....but yet I could listen to that morning noon and night!

I love Frank's dee da do.....but others cringe at it. 

If you love everything by everybody, that's great.

All these threads are tongue in cheek!

In answer to your choice rebuke choice of tune...show and tell your ' sick of hearing it tune!

Tricky question to answer. Are we talking about records that have been played by top DJs at major venues? Or minor records of dire quality that are played after a buying trip to the States? Some of the records already flagged up have an irritating facet, perhaps due to overexposure, but there are dozens like these that annoy some but please others.

I reckon many of the tailor-mades fit the ‘Hated’ description. Four Vandals comes to mind and wins the Drosscar. Biddu Orchestra’s Northern Dancer on Epic is similarly dire but surely never played out by any self respecting DJ. Some of the Casino Classics releases are so poor they sunk without trace and are not worth playing even for a laugh. Such is the depth of brilliant soul music, it is a real struggle to identify the worst record as nobody would bother to play it.

If I had to nominate one horrible sound, if only to provoke debate, it would be ‘I Love My Baby’ on GSF but I don’t care who sings it... I would run off the dancefloor if this was played in public and applaud the DJ who snapped it into two.

I’m with Pete, this site seems to spend so much time with what they dislike.  There is so much negativity on here of late no wonder people are choosing other avenues for their social media.

 So you don’t like a record, move on to something you do rather than waste all the energy on a record that in reality you rarely hear in a venue.  I cannot even remember the last time I heard it out? I heard it on a radio show recently but I didn’t feel the need to smash the radio up 🙄

I had very high hopes for the thread below, died a death before even a whole page, thought it a great opportunity to wax lyrical about these old records that folks are supposed to love and go mad for...

I try and try to come up with ideas that are positive, upbeat and encourage a positive attitude, have done numerous threads in a similar vein, trying to engage the members on the positive side, we are supposed to be lovers of this music and scene, looking in the forum for this I passed a load of threads that could be engaged on positively, unfortunately it's a true fact that any negative thread will run page after page, if the members won't post on the positive there isn't a lot I can do, the threads are there, if the members don't post on them then... 🤨

It's strange because on the net there are literally thousands talking about Soul music, there is a whole very vibrant active scene out there full of human diversity all interacting with one another who can't get enough of it.

Great idea - it would be a good way of sharing memories of the scene in addition to bringing some insight and maybe even generating new appreciation for the well worn, the rare, or simply the underplayed obscurity.

I don't think this place is so negative at the moment, although I don't scour every corner. For me this thread has been a good laugh and Ed deserves our thanks for starting it off and giving us yet another chance to enjoy "Tribute".

maybe a thread on current fav / or current big soul sounds, on any format (mp3/stream/vinyl/cd whatever), I like listening to a lot of Mixcloud stuff
